1962 — 1972 On July 5, 1962 Western High School was inspected and accepted by the Alamance County Board of Education. Hurdles of consolidation and location had been passed when Western opened its doors to students on August 29, 1962 and began serving students who had previously attended Elon, Altamahaw-Ossipee, and a portion of Pleasant Grove. AND THUS ASCHOOL WAS BORN... There were twenty-seven teachers ready to teach the fifty-nine courses offered; there were twenty-four busses ready to transport; there were five hundred thirty-six students ready to make the nickname WARRIORS known throughout the area. In 1968-69 major steps were taken by the Alamance County Board of Education to eliminate all racially identifiable schools in the county. The first Negro student enrolled at Western High. AND THUS A SCHOOL WAS GROWING ... The increase in student body brought about an increase in every phase of school life. This, in turn, brought about plant con- struction in the form of classrooms, auditorium, science, music, and band departments. On August 28, 1972 Western again opened its doors for another term. There was a loyal and dedicated administration; there were fifty-three teachers ready to teach the one hundred sixteen courses offered; there were twenty-six busses and one thousand twenty-eight students eager to resume the role of Western Warriors. AND THUS A SCHOOL THAT WAS BORN grew and reached out into the community and the affairs of the world because it KNEW WHERE IT WAS GOING. HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO WESTERN HIGH! 16
