Just around the bend they see final exams, class day, and graduation! One road leads to work and family life; another to college and military life. Western High School is on the move. j “e : t 1962 — 1972 On July 5, 1962 Western High School was inspected and accepted by the Alamance County Board of Education. Hurdles of consolidation and location had been passed when Western opened its doors to students on August 29, 1962 and began serving students who had previously attended Elon, Altamahaw-Ossipee, and a portion of Pleasant Grove. AND THUS ASCHOOL WAS BORN... There were twenty-seven teachers ready to teach the fifty-nine courses offered; there were twenty-four busses ready to transport; there were five hundred thirty-six students ready to make the nickname WARRIORS known throughout the area. In 1968-69 major steps were taken by the Alamance County Board of Education to eliminate all racially identifiable schools in the county. The first Negro student enrolled at Western High. AND THUS A SCHOOL WAS GROWING ... The increase in student body brought about an increase in every phase of school life. This, in turn, brought about plant con- struction in the form of classrooms, auditorium, science, music, and band departments. On August 28, 1972 Western again opened its doors for another term. There was a loyal and dedicated administration; there were fifty-three teachers ready to teach the one hundred sixteen courses offered; there were twenty-six busses and one thousand twenty-eight students eager to resume the role of Western Warriors. AND THUS A SCHOOL THAT WAS BORN grew and reached out into the community and the affairs of the world because it KNEW WHERE IT WAS GOING. HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO WESTERN HIGH! 16 oor rin Or a iu as lnm Dedicatlonwes | Wi ib aera, topes iain. 18 19 The measure of a man is somehow found in the good and the inspiration which he generates to others, in that portion of himself which he sacrifices for others. Such a man is N.G. Bryan who received his A.B. degree from Atlantic Christian, and his Masters, in 1941, from U.N.C.-Chapel Hill. Mr. Bryan married Dora Bundy from McCall, South Carolina. They have two children and five grandchildren. His first teaching position was at Gibson, N.C.; later moving to Middlesex where he was teacher, coach, and prin- cipal for ten years. In the Mecklenburg, Thomasboro school, he was principal for three years. Would you believe this man worked with students all day and then, after school hours, devoted many extra hours to the scouting program as a Scout leader! From 1945-1961 this versatile young man was Principal of the Graham School district which included four schools. Two years were spent at Altamahaw-Ossipee as Guidance Director before coming to Western High School in 1963 as Director of Guidance. Western High School has been better because of Mr. Bryan’s dedication to young people. More and more the students have come to realize the help which he gives to them. It is most appropriate that, upon Mr. Bryan’s retirement from formal school activity, we dedicate the We-Hi-Wa to him and affectionately say, Our love and best wishes to you — “Chief Red Tie.” f Re ood ww ae alee A nied 77 ee SS ae a a aap : Pra cet : — w ' Clubs And Student Life AtW HS | ; a (7 , ) 2? ) ‘ y : i ; f ‘ ‘ ‘ t A i ‘ Ca i 5 ian } ) Jazz Band Provides Lively Entertainment. The hot summer practices were worth it! The friendly smiles of the flagettes at parades, at ballgames and at the competition performance; the polished shoes, the cleaned uniforms, the squared shoulders of the band members all added up to the point of perfection. The leadership and challenge from Mr. Eddie Harris provided the basis for the pride and popularity of our band throughout the entire year. Distributive education is designed to attract and prepare young people for entry level jobs, for advancement and for management positions in distribution and marketing firms. Most students, upon graduation from high school go imme- diately into full-time jobs in the field for which they are trained. Approximately 25% continue their education in post-secondary schools and colleges for further training in business. Others prepare for professional careers as teachers of distributive education. A. Allen enjoys serving the public through salesmanship. WE-Hi-Wa Publishes We-Hi-Wa may be behind the scenes, but it is surely one of the most active groups on campus. Every member is proud of the opportunity and responsibility of sharing mem- ories of unforgetable moments through the school year, and of bringing to others a little more of our out-reaching school spirit. It seems to those on the staff that there is always some- thing else to be done — more typing, more pictures, more typing, more write-ups, more ads and more subscriptions to sell, but it’s all fun as well as hard work because we have the greatest student body and the greatest yearbook! School just wouldn't be the same without the twenty- six bus drivers who see that our friends arrive safely to the campus. The purpose of the drivers is to provide ade- quate transportation to and from school each day; their duties are to be at school on time and to maintain order while driving a bus. The requirements include: class work, road work, no traffic violations, and good driving ability. TOP: G. Pagett, D. Halford. BELOW: First Row: G. Can- ROW: R. Garrison, P. Bray, P. Tilley, D. Under the new coaching of Jim Melton and Danny Barnette, the wrestlers captured many victories. The highlight of the season was the Burlington Sec- tionals which saw Arthur Tillotson, Ronnie Saul, Mark Daniely, and Randy Wright, as champions and Steve Grant as the Most Valuable Wrestler. Our four sectional champions represented us at the state championships held in Raleigh. Authur Tillotson won first place in the 129 pound class, giving him a 27-0 record for the year. LEFT: J. Every team needs to know that there are people who care enough to want to share in the work which goes along with the activity. This has been true for the wrestlers as the Girls Auxiliary helped to boost the morale of the team. The auxiliary kept the score, ran the clock, and sold concessions to the spectators. It is great to have an auxiliary to represent our school and our wrestlers. T. Aldrdige, Vice-president; C. Ward, Pres- ident; and L. Stegall, Secretary help keep score for Western Wrestlers. 124 L. Western 2. - Western CS 141 The 1971-72 golf season was an interesting one for many reasons. The most outstanding difference was that Kathy Moorefield competed as first female in Mid-State Conference. Kathy proved to be better than several male members by winning over them. John Baxter received recognition for highest indi- vidual scoring at Western, while the overall team worked progressively and finished in 5th place. The We-Hi-Wa staff is proud to present a book of memories to the individuals of W.H.S. We worked many long and tiring hours to publish a yearbook which we feel conveys a true picture of Western. We truly hope this yearbook will hold many fond memories for each of you. As co-editors, we would like to thank Mrs. Barbara Roark and Mrs. Loyce Petersen for their endless vigil of working with us. As a year of transition, 1973 brought changes in the yearbook publication as a contract was signed with a new publishing company and as Mr. Gordon Plumblee became our official photographer. A special thanks goes to Mr. Plumblee and his pho- tography staff. We sincerely appreciate the annual staff who stayed long hours after school to meet deadlines, and who worked on any assigned job without complaints, and helped in preparing what we feel is a great yearbook. We hope each of you will enjoy your yearbook. Janice Apple Co-Editors C.
