basketball Panthers Have lVlost Talented Year The Panthers opened their 1972-73 season with five returning lettermen and seven new squad mem- bers. After losing the first game to East Jackson, the Panthers jumped back to have eight straight wins. Coached by lVlr. Chuck Smith, the team ended the season with a 14-7 win-loss record. This put the team in 2nd place in the Cascades Conference, a position higher than last year. This year, the team was led by co-captains Jeff Dull and Dave Hynson. Juniors Brad Gunsalus and Gale Easton served as team trainer and manager. During the season, the Panthers had two leading scorers. Jeff Dull totaled 344 points, thus becoming the first player at Western High School to reach 1000 points. ln his high school career, Jeff Dull to- taled 1103 points. Greg Clark followed as next high- est scorer with a total of 224, for the season.

Grant Brown gets a quick lesson from Coach Dardzinski. 4. Keith Fritz psyches himself out for the outcome of the meet. 5. Jay Horton pours it on for a close first. 6. LEFT TO RIGHT: Keith Fritz, Frank Nash, John Flanders, Marshall Randall, Dan Reinker, Pat Sprague, Coach Lyn Cryderman, Mitch Fairley, and Jay Horton. Miles to go before I Sleep The 1972-73 Cross Country team finished 5th overall in the Cas- cades Conference with a 5-5 rec- ord. Jay Horton highlighted his final season with a course record on the Panthers' home course. He also was a medalist in the All- County meet with a 17th place finish. Horton was voted Most Valuable Runner and also team captain. Player and teammate Frank Nash captured the Most Improved spot. John Flanders was number two man and was always there when he was need- ed. Many honors were taken by the Panther team this year. Senior Jeff Dull was selected to the All- State team and to the Cascades Conference team for the third year in a row. Greg Clark, Dave Hynson, and Kelly Kronemeyer were named Cascades All-Con- ference honorable mention.
