home economics Basic Skills for Future Developed Cooking and sewing are only the beginning of the home economics department at Western. New cours- es offered and planned have expanded homemaking to include almost everyone. Emphasis is still placed on introducing girls to proper home management but much more than mechanical skills are learned. Child growth and development plus home and family living are only a couple courses that attempt to teach an understanding of the problems encountered in grow- ing up. Bachelor living and bachelor cooking add di- mension tothe department and add to the philosophy of something for everyone. Here boys learn the fundamentals of apartment life and from the looks of some of their creations they learned well. Mrs. Price and Mrs. Bush have worked hard to develop a program that will appeal. N This year's business department carried on in much the same manner as before. Mr. Kalahar resumed his classes of Typing I. Office machines, a new class to acquaint students with the pro- per use of the machinery, helped to keep Mrs. lnman busy, along with Typing ll and Bookkeeping. New Calculators were purchased by the department, for students use. Mrs. White, rejoined the staff this fall, teaching Typing I, Short- hand, and Office Procedures. Thru the year, Mr. Smith worked hard to form and keep a new co- op class. Students worked in the afternoon or night and received credits toward graduation, learn- ing through experiencing.
