home economics Basic Skills for Future Developed Cooking and sewing are only the beginning of the home economics department at Western. New cours- es offered and planned have expanded homemaking to include almost everyone. Emphasis is still placed on introducing girls to proper home management but much more than mechanical skills are learned. Child growth and development plus home and family living are only a couple courses that attempt to teach an understanding of the problems encountered in grow- ing up. Bachelor living and bachelor cooking add di- mension tothe department and add to the philosophy of something for everyone. Here boys learn the fundamentals of apartment life and from the looks of some of their creations they learned well. Mrs. Price and Mrs. Bush have worked hard to develop a program that will appeal. lndivid.ia mpl' math Needs asized There was a day when arithmetic meant addition, sub- traction, multiplication, and division. However, it would be difficult to convince Western's students in math that this is true. Algebra, geometry, and trigo- nometry have replaced the simpler forms and modern math is a foreign language to parents who try to help write homework. Yet, in spite of its complexity, the faculty in math feel that a knowledge of numbers is necessary in modern society. Mr. Rice, Mr. Williams, Mr. Childs, Miss Terry, and Mrs. Miller all do their best to make sure students will be able to correctly balance their checkbooks. More and more the math depart- ment is trying to help the student. Courses are aimed toward the individual so everyone can learn the type of math they need. Students have flexibility in the classroom with the development of individualized in- struction and now can progress more at their own speed. i 1. Miss Terry's math class concentrates on tomorrows' work. 2. Mr. Rice is working diligently? 3. Mr. Williams gives students help with math problems. 4. Scott Ulsaker washes dishes, while Frank Disley dries, during Bachelor Living class. 5. Mrs. Price helps Vicky Smith with her yarn work. 6. Mrs. Bush lectures her class on good home economical procedures. 7. Little friends visit for a day. 32
