So This is What Science is All About Students found that science classes offer more than just reading and tests - labs were an important and exciting part of all the sci- ences. The students got to see what they had learned and read about. The class enrollment was way up, com- mented Nlr. Owczarzak, department head, who has taught science for twelve years. There is a variety of things to do in science. In zooiogy, students learn of the anatomy, phy- siology and ecology of animals, by reading and disecting. Approximately twelve days a semester was devoted to labs in chemistry. Physiology provided students with detailed information of the systems of the human body. X 1 Ks SOON G- L66 Lcmond L. Social Studies People Places and Times Social Studies has been and always will be an important part of Westem. lt has been required that the students take three or more classes in this department. Social Studies covers many academic classes such as Government, which is allowed only for seniors, U.S. History, World History, now a re- quired sophomore class, Phychology and also Family Life. The enrollment in these clas- ses inthe past years has risen sharply mostly due to the requirement of 21 credits to graduate. The teachers methods and main concems in this department are still to have the students leam and comprehend. Social Studies is all about people, places and times. 11 32 Social Studies
