BREAKING Those two words summed up most of the 1981-1982 school year. Old standards and traditions were broken through as new ideas took their place in fads, science, politics, sports, school, and life in general. Times got tougher, but we got stronger. A new pride in Western was evident this year as our War- riors got involved in school activities. Red and blue were everywhere, from the decorations in the halls and paint in the parking lot to the traditional warpaint worn at games and assemblies. The new spirit rallied behind our football team, who beat the Valley Vikings to take Zone Cham- pionship, and then made it all the way to the State Compe- tition. Cn the entertainment scene, old hangouts, such as the Top of Sahara and Hyde Park were abandoned for the livelier atmosphere of Club Fantasia, and the unique Irish-Mexican restaurant, Carlos Murphy's. Sell-out concerts became common as first Journey, and then Foreignersold out within hours. Rumours of the Rolling Stones coming to town created much excitement, but the show never materialized. Finally, skiers were delighted with the long-awaited snowfall which covered much of the Western United States this year and made a good season. Some new pastimes caught on nation-wide this year and even made headlines. The Rubik's Cube, consisting of 54 brightly colored squares designed to rotate in all directions, drove many Americans crazy as they attempted to place the cube in its original pattern of nine squares on each side in the same color. THRCUGH Another pastime, video games, became extremely popu- lar. Names like Pac Man, Defenders, and Asteroids became household words as video arcades sprang up everywhere for people to test their skills. The home-TV versions became just as popular, along with VCR's, satellite television sta- tions, and cable TV. In politics, the world was shocked as assassination ,attempts were made on Ronald Reagan and Pope John Paul ll, and Anwar Sadat was killed. A new phrase, Reagan- omics, was coined to describe the President's new financial policies. Many people were upset by the cutbacks in social programs and extra spending on the defense budget, but others called it necessary to the plan of achieving a bal- anced National Budget and lowering the National Debt. These changes, along with the lowered Income Tax Rate, and high inflation and unemployment, affected everyone. With the coming of the World Class Grand Prix to Caesar's Palace, much excitement was generated, as with the Dodg- er's victory in the World Series, and the 49'ers triumph in the Super Bowl. And, in science, a special breakthrough was made in the area of space travel by the successful launchings of the United States' space shuttle, Columbia. There were also many personal breakthroughs made by the Warriors at Western High School. New friends were made, tough decisions were handled, and discoveries about ourselves and our world broadened our outlook on life. These memories we share, and will be carried with us throughout a lifetime. 1982 307
