IRL SOFTBALL Scfibdll hiis ii Off On March 1, Two new sofTball coaches were oui on The Tield for TryouTs. Ed Phillips Took over The varsiTy Team and Charles STeTTs Took over The junior varsily Team. BoTh men were experienced in coaching sporis. Coach Phillips TaughT for fifTeen years and coached for nine. Coach STeTTs was new This year, buT he has Taughl five years in junior highs, all of These five years he coached sporls. The girls were in good hands. The girls worked hard To earn one of The sixTeen varsiTy Team spaces. For The firsT Time in a few years, The junior varsiTy coach had To make cuTs.- There were seven reTum- ing varsiTy players who assisTed in The Teams sTraTegy. PracTice was held on week days and The games were on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The exercises consisTed of run- ning The field, running drills, baTTing pracTice, Throwing The ball, and calisThenics. 1. T VR ITY WRESTLI CeT down -Take down The varsity wrestling Team did very well this year. The mem- bers of The team were very dedicated, and They had a great deal of self-discipline and endurance. The team was strong in experience and physically strong, too. IT was This self-discipline and experience that Took The Team To zone and state. Five varsity wrestlers went to state. The wrestlers who made iT to state were Melvin Hicks, All Conference, Southem Zone Champion, and undefeated: Ron Moya, who Took 3rd in zone: Sean Collins, who Took 3rd in zone: Tom Geick, who Took Ath in zone: and Kevin Ackerman, who Took 3rd in zone. The Team did a good job and were commended for Their excellent performance. 1. Members of the varsity team, Tired and exhausted, watch their team- mates wrestle. 2. Attempting to gain control over his opponent is Solon Davenport. 3. Kevin Ackemtan struggles to bring down his opponent. 4. Pinning his opponent with much ease is Tom Geick. 5. Sophomore, Sean Collins holds his opponent in a cradle position. 6. The members of The varsity wrestling team are Ron Moya, Boby Craig, Coach Olsen, Sean Collins, Chris Geick, Mo Glancy, Melvin Hicks, Alan Needham, Tom Geick, David Bruins, Howard Tucker, Solon Davenport, and Coach Heter. Not pictured are Kevin Ackerman and Ron Fairley. 7. Taking his opponent down and keeping him down is Tom Geick. 8.
