Mr. Bymes, This year's new coach had been criTi- cized aT firsT, buT his Ten years of coaching came Through. IT was auesiionable wheTher The Team would have a win- Q' ning season. WiTh The greaT coaching of Mr. Bymes and The fine TalenTs of The seven reTuming and nine new players, The Team pulled off The season. Mr. Byrnes Took over The Team afier coaching The junior varsiiy lasT year. He became involved in soccer when he coached his children's Team in 1972. Mr. Byrnes has TaughT high school for 10 years. Cyle lverson and Trey Harris were The Team represenTa- Tives. Their jobs were To lead in The warm-up exercises, conTroI The Teams Temper and To argue and seTlIe prob- lems wiTh The referees. These Two players demonsTraTed Their leadership aualiTies ThroughouT The year and broughT The Team TogeTher. 1 The guys exercised and ran every week day for approx- imaTely an hour and a half a day. AlTa hill was a favoriTe among The many running areas. Skills such as bouncing The ball off The head and puTTing iT up in The air To perform This feaT, were imporTanT To The success of The Team. 1. ln The excilemenf of The game Gary McKimmey slips as he kicks The ball. V SOCCER J.V. is on The ball! The junior varsity soccer team kicked off a great season with ten wins, two losses, and Three ties. Westem is proud of the fact that they finished first in Their league. The most valuable player award was received by Two Team mem- bers This year: Kent Sprotbery for best offensive and Mike Wiszt for best defensive. The most imporved player was Toby Phillips. When asked about next year's Team, Coach MacDonald replied that she would lose most of her play- ers to The varsity Team. t'Varsity should be pretly well set, she continued. t'But as for J.V., we'll be starting all over. 1. The team huddles with Coach MacDonald, as they plan Their Tricky strategy. 2. Speed and agility are important requirements for a successful soccer player, as demonstrated here. 3. The Westem Warriors had Basic's Bengals on the run for most of The game. 4. A teammate watches as Kent Sprotbery steals the ball from a Basic opponent. 5. 1981-82's Junior Varsity soccer team are: lstandingl, Kevin Beck, Mike Wiszt, Kent Sprotbery, Tim Nooner, Jim Cook, Pat Kelly, Kyle Adcor, and Miss MacDonald: lkneel- ingl Danny Antonino, William Graves, Toby Phillips, Reggie Logan, and David Atkinson. Sitting, Marcus Biondi, Sean Sullivan, Pat Carmody. George Femandez, Matt Erickson, and Rob Barilla. 6. The team prac- ticed long hard hours. and it really payed off onthe field. 7. The referee looks on anxiously as a clever pass is executed. 8. Hard-headedness is yet another requirement for a J.V. soccer player. 9. An attentive player recovers a misguided kick. 144 J.V. Soccer
