VA ITY FOOTBALL As The 1981 football season approached, a sense of excitement filled The air. After a heartbreaking first game loss To archrival Clark, The Team rallied back in The next Two weeks against Chaparrel and Bonanza. Af- Ter Three weeks The Warriors were off To The best sTarT since 1976. ln The fourth week The defending sTaTe champion Gorman Gaels shattered a Two game winning streak. ln The first conference game WesTem destroyed Rancho 26-O. Overconfidence and The homecoming jinx almost shattered hopes fora division Title. Again, aftera stunning loss WesTem bounced back by rolling over Las Vegas, Then losing a last minute Thriller To Valley. All ThaT was needed was a victory over Basic which sent WesTem To Zone. In The Zone Championship game WesTem faced Valley for The Southern Conference Title. A highly underrated Warrior Team defeated The Vikings and went on To face The Wooster Colts 18-11. The Colts were believed To be The best Team To come out of The North and proved iT by defeating The mighty 'WE for The state Title. An injury and mistake prone Warrior Team showed That The spirit and pride of a Warrior can never be defeated. 1. Quarterback Paul Matherty eludes a Rancho defensive player. 2. Wait- ing To get back on the field. Paul watches The awesome defense. 3. Jim Thomson shows his pride by singing the Alma Mater. 4. The Thrill of victory at The Zone Championship game. 5. The agony of defeat aT State. 6. Inter- cepting another pass, O.K, Bryant gels a block from Wade Causey. 7. Thurman McKinney trys to avoid a Tackle. 8. Ok. Bryant punts again. 9. Coach Smith decides what to do. 10. The Warriors breakthrough Towards another outstanding victory. 11. Another handoff from Paul Matherly To Thurman McKinney. 12. Ai Lewis talks To his loyal fans after his knee injury keeps him from playing. 13. Dave Duran kicks one of his many field goals. 14. The 1981 Zone Champion Warriors. V AND B FODTBALL The 1981-82 Westem Warrior Football team had an excel- lent season, ending The year with a record of 6-3. Much effort was put forth by the players and with the great coaching talents of Coach McFarland, Coach Olsen, and Coach Germany, it looks like there will be some great Talent joining The Varsity Team next year. The JV-B team, coached by Coach Lee and Coach Heter, also ended The year with an outstanding record of 6-3. 1. Jim Cook goes for The kick off. 2. Warrior's JV get set for another exciting game. 3. After making an interception, Paul Preston takes off for West- ern's endzone. 4. Dennis Ashton carries The ball while Wayne Pool attempts to block. 5. Warrior football games are always full of action and excitement. 6. The defense puts forth effort against their opposing team. 7.
