Because it is the fastest growing school around! It is supervised by three outstanding administrators: Richard Rea, Don Hanna, and Dale Baltus. The school board has also taken an active part in the ad- ministrating. They have been discussing and making plans for our new school. The final touch has been added to the blueprints and we are now in the process of building. The old structure has takena lot of wear and tear, and has served as an institution of learning for students throughout many years . The new building will provide much needed facilities for the increasing enrollment. qu T ii ref . si ...Q is se, 3 .,,,,-'Mgmt-S. 'f 35 E3- 25, I ,,iUxS25b- imimi 2 HSC President Richard M . No, not one of the teachersg it is the famous snake found in the eighth grade science class . The snake, named Charlotte, jennifer, Sampson, or something like that, is a Boa constrictor. Advanced chemistry has been added to the science courses offered. This class helps to prepare the students for college science. Adequate classroom facilities provide stu- dents With an atmosphere of learning and concentration which is necessary for the compre- hension of most mathematical courses. Many classes are offered in mathematics ranging from basic General Math to Analitic Geom- etry, a much more challenging course for the more advanced student. Mathematics is also very important on the Jr. High level Where the students are taught the concepts of modern math and the fundamental prin- ciples of general math. This year new cal- culating machines were added to our equipment and were welcomed by many bookkeeping students . These machines are more modern and make adding those columns a breeze. Along with the calculating machines, new tables were placed in the bookkeeping room. These tables provide students with lots of elbow room and plenty of working space. Equipment isn't the only thing new in the business department. A new course, Business Law and Sales- manship, is being offered. By offering a wide range of business courses, we hope to prepare the busi- ness studentsfor their role as future tycoons of Amer- ica. Western's Home Ec Department helps to build better home makers. The girls in seventh grade are taught proper cook- ing and sewing techniques, the keys to proper dressing, home nursing, and child development. A new class has also been added for those not already en- rolled in Home Ec. It is the home man- agement course. Also new is the sum- mer foods course in connection with business in Kokomo. The girls have a short course in foods and then proceed to workwith foods in local hospitals and restaurants . Bubble, bubble, toil and trouble? After the boys turn in the required projects, they are encouraged to do original projects. An elec- tric guitar made by Ronald Hansworth was one of the biggest accomplishments of the year. This course, because of its opportunities for the students to express themselves, is one which understandably lures so many of our Western males. 55 The Agriculture Depart - ment is expanding its cur- riculum this year. With the aid of the new green house students were able to grow flowers and plants in mid-winter. Instruction deals with farm machinery, plant growth, pest control, live- stockproduction, soil mix- tures, and fertilizer appli- cations. In the past, the student has tried to achieve skill and ability ina variety of sports. Of course, sportsmanship went with this. This year these aims still hold, but something has been added. The sports being taught are those which the student will enjoy throughout his entire life. In advanced physical education, there is even more importance placed on these lifetime sports. Naturally the students are still taught football, basketball, softball and volleyball, but in addition to this they are taught other sports such as bowling, swimming, golf and tennis. New also to the advanced class is co -ed physical ed- ucation Qheh, hehj. This is the first year Western has had this type of program, and it seems to be favorable, particularly to the students. In It's what??! itself, this wasn't too bad but comments made by other members sparked their imaginations. This was an experience the new members won't soon forget. A trip to Milwaukee in March and the annual Science Fair in March are just two of the many projects that kept science club members busy this year. 74 W 2:-74, One of the most active clubs at Western is probably the audio-visual club. The boys are kept busy by the teachers, particularly since teachers are using audio- visual equipment more and more. The boys not only learn how to run the equipment, but also how to repair it. Too, they are taught how to splice films and filmstrips. This is avery important job because Western is acquir- ing more media and it must be taken care of properly. Trip of Value to Members A discussion of the day's events takes place as members head for home. F.E.A. Engineering, an ever -expanding field, generates much interest among students here at Western. Members learn more about this field by way of trips taken throughout the year. Their most important business trip to date is the one that the club took to Day- ton, Ohio. At Dayton, they visiteda Man- ufacturing plant and took a tour of the city air base. At scheduled meetings they hear speeches from past F.E.A. members and working engineers. From this club, the members hope to understand the field of engineering a little better. F.C.A. The club, Fellowship of Chris- tian Athletes, provides a Way in which Christian athletes may get together for a time of fellowship and worship. The meetings consist of bull sessions and scripture study which also try to answer the spiritual needs of each boy. STAND- ING: H. Carter, I. Spangler Dr. W. J. Means, Dr. G Bollinger. Richard R. Rea A.B., Franklin College M.S., Indiana University Superintendent Have you ever wondered just who runs the school? Did you ever stop to think about who hires the teachers or makes out the school's policies? These jobs and others are done by the School Board and Mr. Richard R. Rea, the School Superintendent. At a typical Board meeting these men cover much busi- ness. There are reports on the lunch program, the main- tenance of the building and grounds, and the elementary and high school programs. At the present they are discussing the money situation and the building problems of the new high school. Do you think you could run our school as Well as these men have? Principals Expand Curriculum and Activities Donald E. Hanna B.S., Indiana University M.S., Indiana University High School Principal STUDENTS: Who are these men? They are Mr. Don Hanna, principal of Western High School and Mr. Dale Baltus, assistant prin- cipal. When you make out your schedules, do you think of who is responsible for pro- viding agood academic pro- gram for you to choose from ? This is part of Mr. Hanna's job. He supervises the choice of subjects offered so that some will appeal to our interests and also be bene- ficial to us after graduation. Mr. Baltus supervises the athletics and activities of Western. He schedules dif- ferent events so that they will not conflict with one another. Would you want to do these jobs? What do you suppose these two are up to? Dale F. Baltus, B.S., Wisconsin University, M.S., Indiana University Assistant Principal, Athletic Director, Football Coach, Student Council Adviser, Senior Class Sponsor, In- tramural Basketball Sponsor. When they came they spread like flies through- out Western's spacious halls, bringing with them a new vitality and strength. The Freshmen idea of mod life ap- pears on every square inch of the rooms they occupy, and they have impressed upon the teachers the need for greater discipline and communication. No one knows better than the Fresh- men the value of acceptance. They have been found in every crack and corner of the extra -curricular activities at West- ern High School. Their names are now permanently embedded in this high school's society. Your Staff at Work wk 4:17 Penny checks last minute copy. 'I d1dn't think the line was ever going to end, exclaimed With the last layout finished and dead- line meta sigh of relief is in store. Many people have worked long, hair -pulling hours to make this yearbook what it is. Ithink at times we wondered if it was all worth it, but now that it is finished we know that every minute spent was well worth the effort. Now we wait anxiously for the arrival of the 1969 Echo. This year we've added many new ideas. The bookis now larger and contains 20 more pages than ever before. Also, a special blue section has been added for color and the cover carries the Western High School crest. High school will probably be the most happy and memorable four years of our livesg through the yearbook we are able to capture a few of these memories and keep them with us forever. Ican't begin to thank everyone for their assis- tance in this production of the Echo. May I just say Thank-You!
