Bob Chambers 5'8 Guard . in i Phil Hayes 5'8 Forward Sophomore The Panthers of 1958-59 ended with a 14-6 season record, one of the better records ever compiled at Western. It ended a season full of success for Coach Fred Oyler, in his first season here, and for a group of hard-working Panthers. - Included among the Panthers' honors this year was a share of the Tri-County Conference crown, and championship of the Howard County Invitational Tourney. The Panthers gained the title by defeating Delphi and Northwestern. Twice they best Northwestern and once, Eastern, an unusual happening for previous Panther teams. One of the spectaculars of the season was the win over Southwest- ern, '74-72. The gym record of 28 in one game, set by Joe Vent in 1957, was equaled by Eddie Ransopher that night. Moving into the sectional Western defeated C a mde n , 58-54, and then dropped an 81-41 decision to Kokomo, who went on to win their sec- ond straight sectional title. In closing the -season Western was able to put one player, Eddie Ransopher, co-captain and guard, on the All-Sectional Team.
