If the record of this year's eighth grade teams is any indication of what is to come for Western athletic s , then sports fans of this area should not worry too much, for both the baseball and basketball te ams ended the season with excellent records. The eighth grade baseball team was the county champ this year and ended the season with a 6-O record. Leonard Lorentson was the pitcher for the team. With Mr. Huffman as coach, the basketball team also compiled a very good record. They were defeated in only two game s during the year and they avenged both of these defeats. As well as compiling a good record, the team also gained valuable experience. The highlights of their season came February 22, when they became champions of a tourney held at N o rthwe s t e r n High School, by defeating both Eastern and Howard eighth grade teams. We are certainly proud of these boys. BACK ROW: J. Hobson, mgr.g G. Sipes, L. Lorent son, B . Martin, B . Bogue, J. Rayls, G. Colby, F. Huffman, Coach. FRONT ROW: B. Oakley, P. Fernung, C. The B te am has an outstanding year. Defeated in only two games, while winning 18, is a record that speaks for itself. Very few r e s e rve te ams in Indiana can boast of a record this good. Unfortunately, one of their d e fe at s was in the 4-Way tourney but this was later avenged. Although these seven juniors and six sophomores made several mis t ake s , which are typical of an inexperienced team, they co- ope r at ed well, had fine team spirit, and thus steam-rolled to a successful season. Our Spirit of Western shouldn't be too worried about next season, for these boys are going to keep Western on top in basketball. The class of '61 ended the re gular season with a superb re- cord of nine Wins and three losses. The sixte en boys who com- prised the team had a lot of fun, gained much experience, and under the capable direction of Mr. Murphy defeated many of the area teams. BACK ROW: D. Bowers-mgr., G. ,M ,rs an by xi., STUDENT MANAGERS BACK ROW: R. Shietze, D. Rea, D. Bowers FRONT ROW: J. Opincar, T. Lipinski, J. Hobson The boys pictured above are the ones, above all others, who deserve a word of recognition. For they are the ones who get most of the gripes, try to supply all d e sire s and needs, add words of encouragement, and take c are of equipment. They are the student managers. To be the first ones to arrive and the last ones to le ave is only one of the requirements. It's a tough job, but very, very rewarding. The summer baseball program was handled by David Rea, while in football, Roger Shietze, Tom Lipinski, and John Opincar we re the managers. In basketball, there were two managers for the varsity and reserves team, D avid Rea and Tom Lipinski. Freshman and eighth grade basketball were handled by Dennis Bowers and John Hobson, respectively. 5U 4 I ,Q ir! ' ,fy 12 X , . -4,5-.lf .-. tj f K cel
