Coach Murphy and Quarterback Crail plot pre- game strategy. Western's first varsity football season has definitely been a success. The improvement made by the te am in one short year is phenomenal. This year, playing a rugged eight-game schedule, the Panthers totaled up a season won-and-lost record of 3-5. For a first year club, this is exceptionally good. Carrying the load for the Panthers this year were seven seniors, eleven juniors, two sophomores, and four freshmen. One of the season's high points was the winning of the first game against Jackson Central, 6-0. Another out- standing moment was the close game which was heart-breakingly lost to Kokomo's reserve team, 15-8. Initi ating football at Western has indeed been a rough job. As well as teaching the game to about 25 boys who had never played, there was the task of interesting the students and community in the new sport. New yells, spectator int e r e s t to b e aroused, new rules--all of these things faced the athletic department just two short ye ar s ago. Needless to say, Mr. Murphy and his c ap able assistants have done an excellent job in overcoming all these diffi- culties. Much credit is due the s e men. They have helped put football over the hump at Western. But much credit must also go to the 24 boys who played their best on the football field so that future teams might have something to point to with pride. Truly they have demonstrated the Spirit of Western. 71
