AP ., A In ' x Y ATHLETIC STAFF Mr. Orbaugh, Mr. Huffman, Mr. Fiedler, Mr. Murphy The athletic staff at Western this year has been excellent. The members of the staff have combined their t ale nt s to come up with the best combinations of te am s possible. They have not necessarily had a pe rfe ct season as far as won and lost figures, but they have managed to instill in their te am s the fighting spirit and good sportsmanship for which Western has long been known. Mr. Fiedler has headed baseball, basketball, and track this year with Mr, Murphy handling the coaching reins in football and freshmen basketball. Their very capable assistants have been Mr. Huffman, who has served as football assistant and eighth grade basketball c o ach, and Mr. Orbaugh, assistant football coach and seventh grade coach. Words are so in adequate to express true appreciation felt by the fans and te am s for what these coaches have done. They have devoted their time to improving and stimulating athletic interests at Western as well as serving as exc elle nt examples to each and every boy with whom t he y have had p e r s o nal contact. They have shown the way to compete fair and square, and yet still be a good loser as well as a good winner. This, after all, is one of the real values of sports. Surely we can say that the school's 1958 athletic staff was well respected and good representatives of our Spirit of Western! 68

These 19 boys have participated in at least two years of maj o r sports. This is the first year a page of this type has been possible in the yearbook, for this year honor jackets were awarded as they were earned. All boys who had earned two maj o r awards received a jacket. In the past, a boy received this award only when he graduated. On Tuesday, the 14th of January, in a special ceremony in the gym, these 19 boys were presented their honor jackets. The fans of Western app re ciate the many fine moments of sports thrills that they have given them. In the pages to follow a more detailed description of their sports activities will be presented.
