Through your constant achievements in the field of music, Westernhas been greatlybenefited. Your grace, precision, and perfectionist attitude on all occasions illustrate a desire to accom- plish great things. Due to the hard work of the Band Parents Organi- zation as well as yourself, you are now a uniformed group. Under the ve ry able direction of Mr. Bunish, you put in long hours of practice and rehear sal for February 15, 1957, when you were first seen as a uni- formed marching band. That moment is past now,but we feel that future bands of We ste r n will remember this first group and will use it as a goal to be met and surpassed. Not only have you opened up new oppor- tunities for boys and girls to use their talent, but you have also bettered Western High School . You certainly reflect the Spirit of Western in a great way! He will bring back to us the memories of the times we all shared in the production and the presentation of our senior play, Stranger in the Night, which was so ably directed by Mrs. Evans. The fun we had on our trip to Chicago last October, he will constantlykeep fresh in our minds. The seniors greatly anticipated taking the Spirit of W.H.S. on the annual trip to New York and Washington in May. Our Spirit will be with us always to remind us of the height of our high school career, May 18th and 19th, 1958, our baccalaureate and commencement. We shall always remember and appreciate the excellent guidance of our president, Joe Scott, assisted by David Rea, vice-president, Margy Haynes, secretaryg Janice Thomas, treasurer, and Dan Patrick, reporter. To Mr. Fiedler and Mrs. Harris, who will have s o m uch to do with keeping our Spirit alive, we would like to express our deepest thanks. CLASS COLORS: Powder blue and navy blue. The Cla s s officers were elected as follows: President ..... . . Ed Ransopher Vice President . . . . Ed Krajewski Secretary .... . . Judy Martin Treasurer . . . .... Joe Miller Sgt.-at-Arms . . ..... Bill Marr, Robert O'Neal Reporter .................. .... J an Carter Our Student Coun cil representatives were Janice Benham, Jim Chapman, and Ronnie Colby. These officers-together With our sponsors, Mr. Murphy and Mr. Huffman--organized the class in the fall and started the ball rolling . The Juniors had fou r major projects. The first one was the Valentine's Day program presented to the entire student body and faculty at W. H. S. The second was the Junior Play. The ca s t was chosen from members of the class, and Mr. Murphy and Mr. Kirkpatrick did a very capable job of directing it. It was entitled The Katz Whiskers . One of the largestprojects was the Junior-Senior Prom. Many committees Workedtogether to make it a reallynice reception for the Seniors. A pr oj e c t that began in the fall and did not end until school was dismissed in the spring was the financing of our other activities. Not only did we have to finance the play, the Valentine's program, and the Reception, but we also made enough to pay for our trip to Chicago as seniors. We all worked together selling c on c e s s ion s at ballgarnes, selling tickets for the Junior Play, and selling magazines. By the end of the year, we not only had had fung but we had achieved the g r e at Spirit of W. H. S., through teamwork and loyalty for our school and our class. Onas Conwell Vice President . . . . . Linda Ward Secretary ..... . . Sandy Colyar Treasurer . . . ..... Bill Wells Reporter ..... . . .Winifred Stroup Sgt.-at-Arms . . .... Dirk James, Bill Ripberger Mattigene Anderson and Jay Farwick represented our class in the student council. On January 6, 1958, the Sophomores attended the Purdue vs. Indiana ball game at Lafayette. We all had a wonderful time. We were very glad to be able to order our class rings in the spring, so that we might get them earlier next fall. We Sophomores have had a fun-filled time this year, and we certainly hope that the next two years are as successfulas the past one has been. Instead of loyalty, the students cultivate faith in God. This has been brought about by interesting programs and challenging projects. Mr. Kreller was our sponsor, and the officers were elected as follows: President - Janice Benham Treasurer - Mila Brown Vice -President - Dan Young I Song Leader - Elizabeth Hamilton Secretary - Carolyn Young Pianist - Marge Gilbert The average attendance was two hundred twenty. A chalk talk by Rev. B r own from New London, a color film on the lifevof Christ, a chalk talk by our own Bruce Milburn, and a Bible quiz composed of club members were just a few of the programs given through the year. The club sponsored Morning Prayer Meeting. Five minute s before school began every morning, we had devoti o ns and prayer. They were led by students and everyone was welcome. The most important project of the year was purchasing apainting for the school. Rev. Brown, a well known artist in this section of Indiana, painted a lovely fall scene which was hung in the outer office. Youth For Christ International from Indianapolis sent either Bob Page or Billy Zeoli to almost all of our meetings. They were both an inspiration to the club members. Our thanks to our sponsor, the stude nt s , Youth For Christ, and Mr. Rea for co- operating so wonderfully to make Bible Club important and successful at Western. Also, the club officially name d itself the Wilmer W. With the excellent help of the club's advisor, Mr. Harrell, a good F. T. A. Club has been formed at Western. Much of this year was spent in planning and o rgani zing the club. The F. T. A. is a relatively new o r gani zation in the United States and our club is one of only 28 clubs recognized in the state of Indiana. The F. T. A. was well represented at both the district and state F. T. A. conventions held during the year. Perhaps this club illustrates the true Spirit of Western and in fact the spirit of any school better than other club s 3 for through the F. T. At the basketball games the band presented some fine e nt e rtai nme nt at the half times, both in their marching and playing . Many compliments have been re- ceived concerning the imp rove m e nt s o f the band, and we would like to add our appreciation to them. In February, some of the members of the b and entered the solo and ensemble contest. Those people were Linda Ward, Donna Rea, Jim Chapman, Jim Cook, Jeanne Ke nwo rthy, Joy c e Beahrs, Irma Bruce, Danny Carter, Brenda Givens, Marcia Phillabaum, Mary Phillabaum, Judy Etherington, Linda V o gu s , Frank Schmidlin, and Marion Duncan. Of course, no dis c u s s i o n o f the band would be complete without mention of their beautiful uniforms. In the spring the band participated in the choral fe s tival which combined the bands from E a s t e r n , Northwestern, and Western. Also in the spring they were a large part of the music department that p r e s e nt ed a music festival. We're sure everyone that went heard some fine music and had an enjoyable time. The Western Band concluded their performances by playing for commencement. We believe that here at W. H. S. we re ally have a band of which to be proud. We should like to thank our band director, Mr. John B uni sh , for keeping the Spirit of Western in our organization. The members of the staff have combined their t ale nt s to come up with the best combinations of te am s possible. They have not necessarily had a pe rfe ct season as far as won and lost figures, but they have managed to instill in their te am s the fighting spirit and good sportsmanship for which Western has long been known. Mr. Fiedler has headed baseball, basketball, and track this year with Mr, Murphy handling the coaching reins in football and freshmen basketball. Their very capable assistants have been Mr. Huffman, who has served as football assistant and eighth grade basketball c o ach, and Mr. Orbaugh, assistant football coach and seventh grade coach. Words are so in adequate to express true appreciation felt by the fans and te am s for what these coaches have done. They have devoted their time to improving and stimulating athletic interests at Western as well as serving as exc elle nt examples to each and every boy with whom t he y have had p e r s o nal contact. They have shown the way to compete fair and square, and yet still be a good loser as well as a good winner. This, after all, is one of the real values of sports. Surely we can say that the school's 1958 athletic staff was well respected and good representatives of our Spirit of Western! 68 mul S2 WINNERS OF TWO MAJOR AWARDS BACK ROW: B. Etherington, J. This is the first year a page of this type has been possible in the yearbook, for this year honor jackets were awarded as they were earned. All boys who had earned two maj o r awards received a jacket. In the past, a boy received this award only when he graduated. On Tuesday, the 14th of January, in a special ceremony in the gym, these 19 boys were presented their honor jackets. The fans of Western app re ciate the many fine moments of sports thrills that they have given them. In the pages to follow a more detailed description of their sports activities will be presented. The league was divided into two divisions: the Eastern and Western. There were eight teams in each division. In the Western division, the te ams were No rthwe ste rn, Sweetser, Fairmount, Swayzee, Eastern, Converse, Bunker Hill, and Western. Western had a 6 and 8 record in the league. The Panthers also defeated Rossville in a non-conference game. Games were played at 5:30 every Tuesday and Friday. 'i -1 i 4 Coach Murphy and Quarterback Crail plot pre- game strategy. Western's first varsity football season has definitely been a success. The improvement made by the te am in one short year is phenomenal. This year, playing a rugged eight-game schedule, the Panthers totaled up a season won-and-lost record of 3-5. For a first year club, this is exceptionally good. Carrying the load for the Panthers this year were seven seniors, eleven juniors, two sophomores, and four freshmen. One of the season's high points was the winning of the first game against Jackson Central, 6-0. Another out- standing moment was the close game which was heart-breakingly lost to Kokomo's reserve team, 15-8. Initi ating football at Western has indeed been a rough job. As well as teaching the game to about 25 boys who had never played, there was the task of interesting the students and community in the new sport. New yells, spectator int e r e s t to b e aroused, new rules--all of these things faced the athletic department just two short ye ar s ago. Needless to say, Mr. Murphy and his c ap able assistants have done an excellent job in overcoming all these diffi- culties. Much credit is due the s e men. They have helped put football over the hump at Western. But much credit must also go to the 24 boys who played their best on the football field so that future teams might have something to point to with pride. Truly they have demonstrated the Spirit of Western. 71 WESTERN'S Ist VARSITY FOOTBALL SQUAD nf, A 4. X Cf. The B te am has an outstanding year. Defeated in only two games, while winning 18, is a record that speaks for itself. Very few r e s e rve te ams in Indiana can boast of a record this good. Unfortunately, one of their d e fe at s was in the 4-Way tourney but this was later avenged. Although these seven juniors and six sophomores made several mis t ake s , which are typical of an inexperienced team, they co- ope r at ed well, had fine team spirit, and thus steam-rolled to a successful season. Our Spirit of Western shouldn't be too worried about next season, for these boys are going to keep Western on top in basketball. The class of '61 ended the re gular season with a superb re- cord of nine Wins and three losses. The sixte en boys who com- prised the team had a lot of fun, gained much experience, and under the capable direction of Mr. Murphy defeated many of the area teams. BACK ROW: D. Bowers-mgr., G. If the record of this year's eighth grade teams is any indication of what is to come for Western athletic s , then sports fans of this area should not worry too much, for both the baseball and basketball te ams ended the season with excellent records. The eighth grade baseball team was the county champ this year and ended the season with a 6-O record. Leonard Lorentson was the pitcher for the team. With Mr. Huffman as coach, the basketball team also compiled a very good record. They were defeated in only two game s during the year and they avenged both of these defeats. As well as compiling a good record, the team also gained valuable experience. The highlights of their season came February 22, when they became champions of a tourney held at N o rthwe s t e r n High School, by defeating both Eastern and Howard eighth grade teams. We are certainly proud of these boys. BACK ROW: J. Hobson, mgr.g G. Sipes, L. Lorent son, B . Martin, B . Bogue, J. Rayls, G. Colby, F. Huffman, Coach. FRONT ROW: B. Oakley, P. Fernung, C. Shietze, D. Rea, D. Bowers FRONT ROW: J. Opincar, T. Lipinski, J. Hobson The boys pictured above are the ones, above all others, who deserve a word of recognition. For they are the ones who get most of the gripes, try to supply all d e sire s and needs, add words of encouragement, and take c are of equipment. They are the student managers. To be the first ones to arrive and the last ones to le ave is only one of the requirements. It's a tough job, but very, very rewarding. The summer baseball program was handled by David Rea, while in football, Roger Shietze, Tom Lipinski, and John Opincar we re the managers. In basketball, there were two managers for the varsity and reserves team, D avid Rea and Tom Lipinski. Freshman and eighth grade basketball were handled by Dennis Bowers and John Hobson, respectively. 5U 4 I ,Q ir! In all s po rt s , an abundance of letterrnen, and rn any with varsity experience, emphasize a brightening future. As the Echo goes to press, definite plans for baseball have not been made so its schedule is omitted. However, football and basketball schedules are definite and a good season for both appears evident. Football, in its third season at Western and s e cond varsity season should become much stronger. And the six returning letter- men in b a s ke tb all will definitely help the Panthers toward a better record.
