Ever since these seniors were young children in elementary school and up until they were teens in high school, theyive looked forward to their Commencement and Baccalaureate. They've gone through thirteen years of school and then suddenly they,re challenged by a completely different type of lifestyle. No more school work, sitting through five classes a day, or any of the everyday hassles each student has faced. But also, they have left behind a special part of their lives which can only be brought back through memories. Commencement and Baccalaureate are memories that are cherished forever by every graduate. REGI TRATIG PREP RE sim WT. It I thought you were supposed to get numbers in prison! says Jerry J anowicz. Leo Grotkowski enjoys taking yearbook mugs. Registration was held on August 21, 22 and 23. The freshmen were the first to register on Monday the 21st in morning and afternoon shifts. Tuesday the sophomores returned to Western in the morning while the juniors came in the afternoon. On the last day the seniors came in the morning, and the new Western students came in the afternoon. A loyal bunch of students helped to register everyone by typing, taking pictures, cutting, sorting, making I.D. cards and handing out schedules. The auditorium and commons were full of students comparing classes and teachers and filling each other in on their summers. Although not everyone wanted to give up his summer, all the students enjoyed seeing everyone again. On May 20 the 5th annual Junior Senior Prom was held at the Delta College Commons. The air was crisp, but the couples still found the atmosphere and the beautiful Scenery of the Japanese garden refreshing. During the course of the evening, the couples had an opportunity to have their picture taken by W.J.S. Hicks while the remaining juniors and seniors enjoyed dancing to the music of Ceyx. It is produced on the same schedule it was last year, one every three weeks. In order to sustain the fine quality and standards it has had in past years, the Star has, for the first time, sponsored a dance to raise funds. On the newspaper everyone is directly involved in every issue. The editor and page editors take everyone's work and form it into the finished product. The editor this year is Senior Cindy Miller, who uses the help of page editors. They are News Editor Kelley Coates, Editorial Editors Joan Casterdale and Bill Kohn, Feature Editor Judy Reder, and Sports Editor Sue Rytlewski. The page editors in turn are assisted by the rest of the staff, which is made up of juniors and seniors. Mrs. Hoyle is the advisor who guides these students in their work to produce the Star. Mrs. Hoyle also teaches introduction to joumalism where prospective news staff members are trained. Getting It All Together was our choice for the theme in the 1979 yearbook. The class this year was the biggest since Western opened. With 17 seniors, 14 juniors and 2 sophomores. We all strived to make the '79 book the best year ever in spite of the lack of extracurricular activities. With 16 returning staff members the class hopes to carry on their tradition of great yearbooks. TUDE T C0 CIL KEEP MG I G Student Council members listen intently to the agenda of the meeting. Western Student Council played an important role in school this year. During the course of the year Student Council planned various activities for the students such as dances, assemblies, fund raising drives, and spirit week. Student Council consists of two Co-Chairmen, secretary, treasurer and eight representatives from each class. Elections were held last spring except for the freshmen. Due to millage defeat, the elected Co-Chairmen chose to attend another school, therefore, new Co-Chairmen had to be elected. Student Council decided to give the seats to the next running mates, Linda Prill and Mary Ellen Kelly. Along with the Co-Chairmen is Secretary Beth Birr and Treasurer Judy Reder. Student Council gratefully acknowledges the help given by Mr. Charles Schwartz, Mr. Dick Syring, Mr. Wayne Przybylski, Mr. Ralph Brissette and Mr. Elmer Link. Also many thanks to all who helped them throughout the school year for without their help and cooperation Student Council could not have been as successful. To be eligible to join, one semester of any foreign language must have been completed. Under the direction of the elected officers Brenda Eisenman and Margaret Carbary, cochairmen, and Barb Schwab, secretary-treasurer, the club raised money through a candy sale and filling the vending machines in the commons. They often help shape a life long appreciation and interest in a wide variety of experiences found in this department. Vocational interests connected directly with the advanced fields of art and also the vocational areas indirectly with art are discussed and explored. These careers are discussed through an in-depth exploration of processes which involve the techniques, skills, ideas and the art students. There is a large assortment of techniques which allow a student to express his or her talents. A few of these techniques include sculpture, clay construction, paintings, printmaking, jewelry designing, and both perspective and figure drawing. Our class has been through a lot together sharing many memories like Celebration, sports, dances, and parties together. As freshmen we came, strangers from many area schools, soon to make new friends. We saw and some participated in all extracurricular activities. The following years we have seen many activities we enjoyed gradually being eliminated. Our final year or best,' year came and is gone with nothing but those memories. We have learned a lot about life during our school years. Now it is our turn to accept the challenges and responsibilities life has bestowed upon us. We shall go out in the world with pride. Many of us plan to go on to college, others will find jobs or get married. We do have many memories that will never die whether good or bad. We owe many thanks to our friends, teachers, administrators, and the unknowns who have helped us to complete our education, and we will never forget them. This is only our beginning.
