The team started slowly, but came on strongly to finish out the season in third place in the Little-Eight Conference. This varsity team showed fine spirit and an excellent at- titude. These boyswere goodworkers. Their spirit and hard work, which is a trademark of Western teams, made them a fine repre- sentative of our school. . . We witnessedthe change from boys who knew very little about football into a team which worked hard and never let up. This fall's freshmen and sophomore team will fill in the gaps that are left from a fine graduating senior class. In order that the excellent athletics be maintained at Western High School, it is the responsibility of each incoming class to accept this challenge and perform to the best of their ability. I believe the frosh- soph football team has been no ex- ception to this tradition. . . . N The 1964-65 Rams finished second in one of the most tightly contested con- ference races ever staged inthe Little 8 . With the exception of two one point losses and another by a five point margin, the cagers could have kept the conference record unblemished for the second year in succession. Amongthe most memorable victories were the conference wins over co-champ Annawan and district winner Tam pic 0 plus the win over Walnut. Western's non- conference record was 8-2 which included a 5 win no loss mark against Blackhawk competition. The iron men senio r s Larry Frank, John Van Drew, Jeff Langford, Roger Marquis, and John Behrends started practically every game after the loss of Dick Marquis. Behrends and Marquis were All-conference s e 1 e c t i ons and paced the scoring d epartm ent along with John Van Drew who also was the number two re- bounder. Terry Pratt and Dan Morris were key reserves and earned their letters as juniors. John Behrends seta number of seasonal and cumulative rebounding and scoring records and Roger Marquis picked up the most recoveries and took the Free Throw Trophy with a 3753? average. Western's attack featureda pressing defensive which seemed to compensate for relative lack in height again st practically all opponents. The seasonal defensive average was 53.8 which was just shy of a new seasonal record. . . . . . Because of the fine group of underclassmen, Western can look forward to a fine year in 1965 and 1966. Most productive members, point-wise, of this year's squad aside from the seniors already mentioned were Jerry Rodgers, Tom Vander Meersch, John Behrends, Bill Runft, Jim Bickett, and Les Newman. The varsity track team was bolstered by fine Fresh-Soph relay teams. Highlights of the season aside from the conference championship were the first-place trophy in the Hall Red Devil Relays in Spring Valley, and a second place finish in the conference meet. 45 .,,..,,,,,M.,,.M,g 'illi- Western's Most Valuable Track Star The supreme and constant effort Relay team receives honors Distance runners remain undefeated Prize-winning form 46 Trophy-winning team completes an outstanding season Double winner in Fresh-seph Meet Valuable Athlete Big J Olm throws Platter conference . This was the first time that the chorus had gone to State, and everyone was very proud of them and their director, Mrs. Hubbard. Seventh Grode Chorus ' 97 Baseball-1965 The Western Junior High baseball team had a successful year. The team gained much experience and learned the all important quality of sportsmanship. 1-2-3-4 . . . . a good work out brings good results. 98 The Heavyweight did pretty well this year with the guidance of coaches Funderberg and Strawbridge. They learned many of the basic skills involved in basketball and improved con- siderably as the year progressed. The Western Lightweight basketball team had a very impressive season this year compiling an 18-0 record. They also won the first place trophy for the Little Eight Lightweight Tourna- ment. Most of the games were very exciting and close, but the younger Rams combined skill and determination to win. 99 Leading the heavyweight team to victory were: Kay Strouse, Debbie Catton, Mar- sha Coomer, and Gretchen Weber. Morole Boosters Cheering for the lightweights this year were: Carla Carper, Debbie Sprowls, Kathy Manthe, and Lauri Langford. IO0 WINS FIRST ANNUAL TEACHER AWARD Mr. Harry Lehning was elected Teacher of the year. This was an honor devised by the student - council and carried out by vote of the entire stu- dent body.
