Loss To Mt. Airy Climaxes The team started the second half of the season against Ragsdale. The offense was held scoreless, the defense played well but allowed one touchdown in the second half. Everything fell into place against East Surry. The Hornets played as they should have all season, de- stroying 3-A East Surry 46-8. Everything looked good for the next week's game against Allen Jay, who had proved to be a strong team defeating Southern. This game was crucial in that it could decide first place in the conference between Western, Southern, and Allen Jay. At the outset, it was all Allen Jay as they jumped to a 14-0 lead. Then Sam Derence and Phillip Pressley connected on a long pass play, giving Western new hope. Later in the game, Danny Webster bulled over for an apparent touchdown only to have it nullified by a penalty. And still later Western blew numerous field position advantages and couldn't score. It was a downhearted team which had its hopes shattered. Although morale was not high, the team went to Gibsonville and played a sound game beating a strong Gibsonville team. Phillip Pressley again led the he- roics, scoring three touchdowns. Going into the last game against lVlt. Airy, the team hung slimly to the hope of a .500 season. Several intercepted passes and bad breaks led to a 20-6 loss and the lVlt. Airy Bears had spoiled West- ern's Homecoming.
