As the Western Guilford football team began their workouts in August, there was a lot of optimism. Although they lost several key players through grad- uation, the Hornets still had their talented backfield duo of Danny Webster and Phillip Pressley returning. So it was with hopes of a great season that the Hornets traveled to meet 3-A power Elkin. Elkin struck early with a 24 point first quarter while the Hornets just couldn't get untracked. The second game of the season matched Western against another one of their six 3-A opponents, Northwest Guilford. Johnny Ralls and Phillip Pressley each scored two touchdowns, while the defense, led by Mitch Clendenin and Ronnie Mobley, played an outstanding game. This win helped the Hornets pre- pare for arch-rival, Southern Guilford. The long awaited game began in eager anticipation of a Hornet victory. But again Southern won. The next game was against Stoneville. The Hornets won easily against the out-classed Stoneville team, and then the Hornets headed to South Stokes. Both teams played well, with South Stokes hold- ing a 6-O half-time advantage. South Stokes took advantage of our mistakes and the game ended in a sad 20-8 defeat for Western.
