Art ls Long and Time is Fleeting Piter Peeper pecked a pick of peppered pickles - Where's the pick of peckered pipples Piter Peeper pecked? lVlrs. Bray's drama and speech classes could be heard up and down the halls, practicing clear pronun- ciation. Drama students also studied the history of drama and its modern developments. The art class studied art history in its various stages and experi- mented on their own with line, color, form, and texture in several mediums. Last year, with a new grading system and its own Sergeant-IVlajor , our band got off to a great start. Grievances were brought before the Senior Letter- men, a sort of advisory board for IVlr. Spencer. West- ern's answer to Napoleon, Tim Butler, led the band through a full season of football games and parades. The band gave its annual Christmas concert and again participated in the North Carolina State Band Con- test. Through it all one could see lVlr. Spencer lurking with pencil and paper marking down demerits. i -Longfellow Mr. Richard Spencer, Chorus, Band I, II Mrs. Jo C. Bray, Humanities, Drama, Speech, Art Drama students ham it up.

Physical Education Builds Western's Student Body Mr. Allen Jones, Phys. Ed. Miss Martha L. Smith, Phys. Ed. Mr. John Brooks, Phys. Ed., Biology Boy, recess used to be one of our favorite subjects, but when it comes to Phys Ed... A common gripe in eighth and ninth grade circles, it's come a long way from 1892 and James Naismith. This year the classes participated in the usual foot- ball, basketball, speedball, archery, track, and tumb- ling, along with classes in health. In addition, the students land even some of the teachersl took advan- tage of our new trampoline.
