They also studied and practiced the art of writing sentences, paragraphs, and compositions on various topics. In literature, they read Shakespeare's Julius Caesar, and selected short stories, poems, and novels. Ninth grade English also involved much grammar, especially spelling, diagramming, and word drills. In their first taste of high school work, they read Charles Dickens' Great Expectations and many short stories and essays. N ffm , A B ,xv 4

The English department stressed various points according to grade and aptitude. The seniores offe Westerne ware engaged inne the studie offe Worlde Literature, a great deale offe wich focussed on the writtings offe Geoffrey Chaucere and othere Middle Angleish autheres. English history was an integral part of Senior English. The development of the language began with Beowulf and was traced through Shakespeare, to the romantic poets, to George Bernard Shaw and Aldous Huxley. And that term paper. . . Alas, Pearl, you must go on to class for what will our minister Arthur Dimmesdale say if you missed your American Literature Course? You must not detain your fellow juniors. Outside reading played an important part in Junior English. The Scarlet Letter, The Red Badge of Courage, and Death of a Salesman were read by delighted l?l juniors.
