. . Put into Practice Mrs. Gloria Woodward, Mrs. Jane Kennedy Guidance and Library Each year seems to begin with scores of incorrect schedules from that great computer in the sky - and this year was no exception. Anyone who needs a schedule change - except freshmen wanting to drop shop or physical science and seniors wanting to drop chemistry or physics - report to the guidance office at this time. Then after all - or most - of the schedule problems were corrected, lVlrs. Kennedy and Mrs. Woodward faced eighth and tenth grade achievement tests, the juniors' PSAT, and the dreaded SAT. ln between, there were senior transcripts and college applications to work on, and always students looking for someone to listen to a problem. How would you like to track down 900 students with overdue books? lCome on now, admit it: we've all had at least one book overdue, right?l This was one job of the library staff and it wasn't an easy one. Nlrs. Smith and her staff of students spent a busy year compiling supplementary lists for teachers, keeping the library organized, and helping students with re- search problems. Mrs. Sandra Smith

Mechanics of Successful Administration lt's no little job to run a high school like Western Guilford. Through all of our big crises land even the little onesl, this year lVlr. Walters was around to listen to our problems. From required haircuts on the first day of school to graduation he was there to help and to guide us. l'm not fat, l just have a husky stomach, reads the sign on the wall of lVIr. CarrolI's office. With a smile and a joke, he was always there, ready to help us with our problems. As the commander of a fleet of seventeen buses, he bravely faced accidents, lWhom did you hit this time, Fournier?l, a shortage of driv- ers, and incorrect time sheets. We salute you, Ad- miral. lt is said: Behind every successful man there is a woman. This is certainly true in the cases of our school secretary, Mrs. Martha Williamson, and our treasurer, Mrs. Carol Norman. They kept smiling all year long despite the hundreds of interruptions each day. Mrs. Martha Williamson, Mrs. Carol Norman Mr. H. C. Walters l Mr. Edwin Carroll

WW M in 1 Mrs. Marie Swing, English ll, Ill Within Western Guilford there vvas one point of mutual reference for every student: English. The English department stressed various points according to grade and aptitude. The seniores offe Westerne ware engaged inne the studie offe Worlde Literature, a great deale offe wich focussed on the writtings offe Geoffrey Chaucere and othere Middle Angleish autheres. English history was an integral part of Senior English. The development of the language began with Beowulf and was traced through Shakespeare, to the romantic poets, to George Bernard Shaw and Aldous Huxley. And that term paper. . . Alas, Pearl, you must go on to class for what will our minister Arthur Dimmesdale say if you missed your American Literature Course? You must not detain your fellow juniors. Outside reading played an important part in Junior English. The Scarlet Letter, The Red Badge of Courage, and Death of a Salesman were read by delighted l?l juniors.
