But Regroup In Time To Sweep Conference Tournament The new year opened vvith a heart-breaking loss to Ragsdale as they hit a long jump shot right before the buzzer. The team then hit a lovv spot, losing four of the next five games. The team regrouped to beat Allen Jay and then proceeded to win four straight conference games. Goose Tatum scored a record 35 points against Stoneville. The Hornets entered the tournament with good momentum and vvon it, destroying Gibsonville 77-42 with a sensational pressure defense in the champion- ship game. The team then advanced to the district tournament and beat two fine teams, W. Davidson and Central Davidson, to get into the finals against old foe Gibsonville. Gibsonville proved that it's tough to beat a good team three times in one season by squeaking past the Hornets in overtime. And thus both the Hornets' nine game winning streak and hopes for the state tournament were ended.

Oheman. The Western Guilford Girls' Varsity Basketball Team started the season with high expectations for a good record. At the beginning of the season the problems were many, among them the girls getting used to working together as a team. At midseason, Miss Miller, in her first year as coach, had the girls improving with each game. But, as usual, the team was plagued with injuries. Through all prob- lems, though, the girls kept their hopes of having a good season. Though their final record was 2-13, the record didn't show the tremendous effort the girls put forth nor the closeness of the final scores. ln the preliminary tournament the girls were edged out by Stoneville, the team they had beaten both times in regular season play. Though this is the last season for all conference performer Wanda Cummings and for top rebounders Jill Doty and Kathy Kearns, here's hoping that for next year's roundball team the fickle , , Co-captains, Wanda and Jill, talk with Coach Miller. finger of fate points the other way. 98
