This year, as always, there were many people who deserved to be recognized by the yearbook. All of these people-teachers, advisers, and others-con- tributed an important part to the growth of Western Guilford High School. However, this year, we made a departure from the norm and chose to honor not one, but a group of people. Their efforts have contributed greatly to our school's appearance and stature in the community. Since the new school was built, these men have worked hard to improve the school's athletic pro- gram. They have devoted their time, energy, and money to the betterment of our campus. In 1968 these thirty-eight men began a campaign to raise 340,000 to build the football field and athletic stadium. The field behind the school was graded and seeded, a sprinkler system was installed, the cinder track was laid, and electric lights were installed. The field was ready for use during the 1970 season. Plans are now in progress for concrete stands on the home side of the field. These men deserve a vote of appreciation from the student body for their hard work. So, to the Western Guilford High School Stadium Committee, we would like to say. . .Thank you. X 'K VW + L. WESTERN GUILFU A A X M x K K - .-. 'Q Nw- K . . Through all of our big crises land even the little onesl, this year lVlr. Walters was around to listen to our problems. From required haircuts on the first day of school to graduation he was there to help and to guide us. l'm not fat, l just have a husky stomach, reads the sign on the wall of lVIr. CarrolI's office. With a smile and a joke, he was always there, ready to help us with our problems. As the commander of a fleet of seventeen buses, he bravely faced accidents, lWhom did you hit this time, Fournier?l, a shortage of driv- ers, and incorrect time sheets. We salute you, Ad- miral. lt is said: Behind every successful man there is a woman. Anyone who needs a schedule change - except freshmen wanting to drop shop or physical science and seniors wanting to drop chemistry or physics - report to the guidance office at this time. Then after all - or most - of the schedule problems were corrected, lVlrs. Kennedy and Mrs. Woodward faced eighth and tenth grade achievement tests, the juniors' PSAT, and the dreaded SAT. ln between, there were senior transcripts and college applications to work on, and always students looking for someone to listen to a problem. They also studied and practiced the art of writing sentences, paragraphs, and compositions on various topics. In literature, they read Shakespeare's Julius Caesar, and selected short stories, poems, and novels. Ninth grade English also involved much grammar, especially spelling, diagramming, and word drills. One of the first actions was to raise the membership requirement from 3.0 to a 3.2 grade- point average. In November, twenty-two new mem- bers-sophomores and juniors-were inducted into the club in a candlelight ceremony. Instead of, and perhaps worse than, initiation they immediately par- ticipated in planning for the district convention, held at Western on November 19. Beta Club members from five other area schools attended this convention, participating on election of officers, talent compe- tition, and accounts of the past year's activities. One division of the Publications Department was the newspaper staff. This class had a two-fold purpose of publishing school news and studying the principles of journalism. We published a little Hornet weekly and put out three big Hornets this year. The first highlighted our Homecoming, the second was a spring issue, and the third was a graduation edition. We exchanged papers with other schools in our vicinity to gain helpful ideas. We made various con- tributions to the local Guilford Gazette, giving the people in our .community an awareness of our school's activities. Although they lost several key players through grad- uation, the Hornets still had their talented backfield duo of Danny Webster and Phillip Pressley returning. So it was with hopes of a great season that the Hornets traveled to meet 3-A power Elkin. Elkin struck early with a 24 point first quarter while the Hornets just couldn't get untracked. The second game of the season matched Western against another one of their six 3-A opponents, Northwest Guilford. Johnny Ralls and Phillip Pressley each scored two touchdowns, while the defense, led by Mitch Clendenin and Ronnie Mobley, played an outstanding game. This win helped the Hornets pre- pare for arch-rival, Southern Guilford. The long awaited game began in eager anticipation of a Hornet victory. But again Southern won. The next game was against Stoneville. The Hornets won easily against the out-classed Stoneville team, and then the Hornets headed to South Stokes. Both teams played well, with South Stokes hold- ing a 6-O half-time advantage. South Stokes took advantage of our mistakes and the game ended in a sad 20-8 defeat for Western. Airy Climaxes The team started the second half of the season against Ragsdale. The offense was held scoreless, the defense played well but allowed one touchdown in the second half. Everything fell into place against East Surry. The Hornets played as they should have all season, de- stroying 3-A East Surry 46-8. Everything looked good for the next week's game against Allen Jay, who had proved to be a strong team defeating Southern. This game was crucial in that it could decide first place in the conference between Western, Southern, and Allen Jay. At the outset, it was all Allen Jay as they jumped to a 14-0 lead. Then Sam Derence and Phillip Pressley connected on a long pass play, giving Western new hope. Later in the game, Danny Webster bulled over for an apparent touchdown only to have it nullified by a penalty. And still later Western blew numerous field position advantages and couldn't score. It was a downhearted team which had its hopes shattered. Although morale was not high, the team went to Gibsonville and played a sound game beating a strong Gibsonville team. Phillip Pressley again led the he- roics, scoring three touchdowns. Going into the last game against lVlt. Airy, the team hung slimly to the hope of a .500 season. Several intercepted passes and bad breaks led to a 20-6 loss and the lVlt. Airy Bears had spoiled West- ern's Homecoming. So, a long season came to a dismal end and one of the strongest teams in Western Guilford's history finished with a lowly 4-6 record. 1 'gnu.,2.1,ug.www,f.w,.,1,,.,a . xezmwmwlawmgf anew.-:.,H :rf , .aw Dismal Season 90 Jayvees Have Winning Season f-.' The only starter returning from last year was center Goose Tatum. But, fortunately for the Hornets, they came up with three fine players from last year's powerful Jayvee squad and rolled up a 16-9 record, winning the conference tourna- ment. The team opened with an impressive win over weak E. Davidson, but then lost a tough game to lVlt. Tabor. The team recouped by beating Coach Jones's home school, Alleghany. Another vic- tory over E. Davidson helped to prepare the squad for their trip to lVladison-lVlayodan, one of the state's finest 3-A teams. The Hornets played IVladison-lVIayodan even for three quarters but then lost their composure in the last quarter and were beaten. Another loss to lVlt. Tabor follow- ed, with the team playing a terrible floor game, shooting 32M from the field and missing 20 free throws and making 17 turnovers. Over the holi- days the team beat W. Davidson, E. Randolph, and Alleghany. -li W ww' in N ,A MDW 9 A f 752,25 K 5 55235 'f Y Then Fall Into An Erratic Slump WG HS Scoreboard M, Western Guslfordo 580W rrar Western Guilford 59 70 . - f,-4 -- 1,57 vvesm 71 a Western East Davidson 74 W Western Qfllfladison-llllayodan 74 ' , f-Wifi? The team then hit a lovv spot, losing four of the next five games. The team regrouped to beat Allen Jay and then proceeded to win four straight conference games. Goose Tatum scored a record 35 points against Stoneville. The Hornets entered the tournament with good momentum and vvon it, destroying Gibsonville 77-42 with a sensational pressure defense in the champion- ship game. The team then advanced to the district tournament and beat two fine teams, W. Davidson and Central Davidson, to get into the finals against old foe Gibsonville. Gibsonville proved that it's tough to beat a good team three times in one season by squeaking past the Hornets in overtime. And thus both the Hornets' nine game winning streak and hopes for the state tournament were ended. - Girls Plan To Improve Previous Records Girls' Varsity Basketball Team. Oheman. The Western Guilford Girls' Varsity Basketball Team started the season with high expectations for a good record. At the beginning of the season the problems were many, among them the girls getting used to working together as a team. At midseason, Miss Miller, in her first year as coach, had the girls improving with each game. But, as usual, the team was plagued with injuries. Through all prob- lems, though, the girls kept their hopes of having a good season. Though their final record was 2-13, the record didn't show the tremendous effort the girls put forth nor the closeness of the final scores. ln the preliminary tournament the girls were edged out by Stoneville, the team they had beaten both times in regular season play. Though this is the last season for all conference performer Wanda Cummings and for top rebounders Jill Doty and Kathy Kearns, here's hoping that for next year's roundball team the fickle , , Co-captains, Wanda and Jill, talk with Coach Miller. finger of fate points the other way. 98 But Fate Dooms Them To A Losing Season WG HS Scoreboard 70-71 Girls' Varsity Basketball Western Guilford Western Guilford West:-:rfiiGuilford Western Guilford Western Guilford Western Guilford Western Guilford Western Guilford Conference games Stoneville Gibsonville Southern Guilford Allen Jay Gibsonville Southern Guilford Allen .lay Stoneville However Nothing Can Destroy Their Spirit And Enthusiasm 100 Junior Varsity Hurt By Inexperience Boys' JV Basketball. Nlost classes were required subjects-English, Nlath, Phys Ed, Home Ec for girls, and of course that all-important study hall. 122 Freshmen Rally Forth 'YW Q L .N C he Web fs.. f 'f' axis n. Coltr editor's notes A yearbook is made up of memories-some wonderful, some not quite so. It takes the unified efforts of a large number of people to produce an accurate record of a year's events. Among them, vve would like to thank lVlr. Jeff Overby of Delmar Publishing Company, who managed to see us through the year successfully, our sponsor, lVlrs. Besi IVlorgan, vvho helped us over the rough spots, Eve Rallings, our business manager, vvho kept our accounts straight and managed the sales, The Greensboro Daily New, lVlr. Thacker and Tim Butler for their excellent photography, all of the section editors and staff members who did such a great job, everyone else who helped behind the scenes, and Junior lVlaynard, who managed to stay awake long enough to help put a section together. a shining year, remembered bright and gay, stilled to a shimmering instant in time recalled, perhaps softened and blurred around the edges. . . but it was our year . . . lLiz Bezeral Cindy l 176 xi N55 'U as :ini--5 lun-gi 4 ,sm '-a+....,..,,k J-,xii E Y, ,lf 4 ' C' R ff ' ,xy fu 1 V x f Y. f KVM' A-7 X Jvlilclfm Q' Lia 15' 'X V CX -.
