By Mamie Gordon and Shirley Wright It is five-thirty, and another busy day is over in my second floor office in the Bell Telephone Building. As I make a last minute check of my work, my eyes wander to the calendar on my desk. Why, this is May 28, 1965, exactly twelve years since the 1953 class of Guilford High School graduated! Since then, the twenty-four members have drifted to all parts of the earth. Charlie Bondurant has taken over his father's garage. Funny—every car Charlie works on has something wrong under it. Ten-to-one, he's sleeping. Jimmie Carlisle has opened up his own dance school, Jimmie's Jiving Jitterbuggers . Herman Causby, now manager of Walker Avenue A P Store, hasn't yet persuaded Martha to give up her home economics teaching at Guilford High School and stay at home with their twelve children. Pete Driver, the class grumbler, is still grumb- ling this year because the Brooklyn Dodgers lost the World Series again. Johnny Dyson has finally landed a good job. He is a Fuller Brush man. Many husbands are looking for him because he sells every woman he meets one of every brush in the book. Jody Gordon and Laverne Pegg, Broadway blondes are still trying to convince Troutman's Beauty Salon that they are good enough to graduate. Vernon Hinshaw is a famous band leader in Hollywood. His time is divided between his wife, their Beverly Hills home, and his jazz band at the Brown Derby. Byron Hodgin and Sherry Puckett are married now and are rearing five little cheerleaders. Polly Jackson is married to her sailor. They are rearing a red-haired girl. Her husband thinks two red heads are better than one. Jimmy McDowell, Florenz Ziegfield the second, has opened his own burlesque show on Broad- way. Gretchen Collins, nee Mitchell, has moved to New York with Richard and their famous quad- ruplets who are advertised as raised on Pet milk. Confidentially she feeds them Kroger's milk. Their names are Richard, Ralph, Roy, and Robert. Bobby Nelson is in Europe now. He is touring over there as Mighty Nelson , the midget wrestler. Carolyn Pipkin gave up the idea of house- keeping and left with Miss Higgins to join Fred Waring's Pennsylvanians. Carolyn is Fred's fa- vorite soloist. The twins, Bill and Bob Ratledge, are in Washington with the F.B.I. Mr. Hoover says they are famous as twin detectives. With their twin act, they have scared many criminals into confessing. Eugene Reed still has his physique. He is greatly admired by the basketball players at Woman's College where he is coach. Glenn Stafford has the easiest life of all. He is floorwalker for McDowell's Follies on Broad- way. Guilford College has built a hospital and has our own Amanda Spencer as head nurse. She still finds it hard to resist certain males at Guilford College. Pat Smyre is now director of King's Mountain High School dramatics class. A change in her last name is in the making. What will it be? Peggy Tallant is now the shining star of Mc- Dowell's Follies on Broadway. Jimmy Warf is now James Wolfe , the new swoon star in Hollywood. His bashful, brown eyes have taken him places that his wit would not. Jimmy Watterson has advanced greatly in the last twelve years. He was promoted last week to manager of the lingerie department at Macy's in New York. Mrs. Shelton, your husband is waiting for you. With this, my mind rapidly jumped from my old classmates to the humdrum activities that confront a woman who works and keeps house at the same time. I carefully placed those high school memories in the niche of my mind that is reserved for such, with a realization that they would probably remain there until some future time when I would drag them out again for a pleasant hour.
