• We, the graduating class of Guilford High School dedicate the 1953 AMICI to Mom, whose patience and gentle firmness have guided us through the years of our lives, whose loving words have made us forget our sorrows and disappointments, and whose gentle hands have wiped away many tears. Mom, who has sat up into the wee hours of the night fixing a pair of pants for Junior's big date, or making a party dress for Sally's first dance, and whose understanding love for her children has cleared every puzzle of our incapable minds. and to Dad, the provider, the most wonderful father any child could ever have. Dad, who likes to kid you, who slips you a dollar or two when you need it for an important date, who will even give you the keys for the car on the night he had planned to take Mother to the concert. Dad, who finally gives in and lets Mary have the new dressshe just hasto have. Yes, to you, Mother, and to you. Dad, we proudly dedicate our finest masterpiece, which we sincerely hope will partly repay the wonderful people God picked for our parents. To Mother and Dad, who have stood beside us from baby gown to graduation gown. 1 David K. Scarborough A.B.; Social Studies and Physical Education Duke University Mrs. Geneva W. For years we had waited for the day when we would go into high school, and when that day came, we were all seated orderly in the Freshman home room. We accomplished a great deal that year and added many memories to our already bulging collection. Miss Guion, our home room teacher, and Mr. Meredith became engaged to be married. This event proved to be very exciting to us as well as the upper- classmen. Feeling very dignified, we marched into the sophomore home room on the first day of the following September. We will never forget the way Mr. McCormick, our third Biology teacher, taught us to read aloud before the class. We will have to admit that our vocabulary and reading ability were somewhat improved although we all thought that he was too strict. We studied hard that year, and as the weeks flew by quickly, we realized that we would soon be juniors. Summer vacation was soon over, and we really felt like juniors as we made our way to the library, which was our home room. Diamonds and marriages were common events this year. It seemed as though all the girls were wearing diamonds or taking up a blissful life as housekeepers. We inquired at least twice daily for about two months about the arrival of our class rings. When we had almost lost hope, we received the news that they were in the post office. The next morning we gathered noisily in the auditorium, and the rings were distributed. Proudly we trooped back to our classrooms, and the noisy chatter of admiration began. Mrs. Taylor admired each ring with a different comment. Mr. Jenkins, knowing our financial status, gave us the opportunity to run the school store as a means of securing money for the Junior-Senior Prom. We shall always be thankful to him for his generosity and helpfulness. Immediately after the seniors left for their trip to Washington, we began hanging paper, cutting out stars, and preparing place cards and nut cups for the biggest event of our high school days. As we worked, the gymnasium began to look more and more like the star-lit heavens. We were genuinely paid for our labor by the fun and enjoyment that we had that Friday night. Now we are seniors and soon our school days will be over. We have learned to work together as a class which is one of our greatest achievements. We sincerely hope that Guilford High School has gained something by our being here this short while because we have gained a lot. Some of our book knowledge will soon be forgotten, but the memory of four pleasant years of association with teachers and classmates will always be with us. Gretchen Mitchell Historian 7 Memd We, the Senior Class of 1953 of Guilford High School, Guilford County, State of North Carolina, realizing that we have unsound minds that are apt to desert us at any moment, do hasten to will the following articles and properties before the annual goes to print. ARTICLE I - General Properties To the Junior class, we leave our home room with its Venetian blinds, sincerely hoping that the light entering through these blinds will help you see your way to graduation. To the sophomores, we will our radiator cut-off with Mrs. Taylor as custodian. To the freshmen, we will the sum of $1.00 and nothing else. You don't deserve anything because you are freshmen and we are leaving the $1.00 so that you will not attempt to break this will. ARTICLE II - Personal Properties I, Charlie Bondurant, just leave. I, Jimmie Carlisle, will my witty ways to James Needham. I, Herman Causby, leave my future father-in-law's bank roll to Ray Inman. I, Robert Driver, leave my ability to get excused from class to Marie Dyson. I, Johnny Dyson, will my good disposition to Peggy Howard. I, Jody Gordon, leave my ability to go steady with three boys at one time to Iris Simpson. I, Vernon Hinshaw, leave my freshman girl friends to Franklin Hall. I, Byron Hodgin, will my knowledge of parliamentary procedure to Dick Ott. I, Polly Jackson, will my creative writing ability to Carl Reed. I, Jimmy McDowell, will my role of Romeo to anyone who thinks he can handle it. I, Gretchen Mitchell, will my ability to get a diamond to Sally Johnson. I, Bobby Nelson, leave my physique to Jimmy Newlin. I, Laverne Pegg, will my size nine figure to Mary Ann Brewer. I, Carolyn Pipkin, leave my place in the Beta Club to Sharon Lockhart. I, Billy Ratledge, leave the mole on my face that identifies me to Thomas Shelton so that the teachers may tell him from his twin. I, Bobby Ratledge, leave my deadpan expression that I use when I wish to appear dumb to Durrel Lefler. I, Eugene Reed, will my spicy jokes to Tip Noe. I, Amanda Spencer, leave my beautiful blonde curls to Edith DeGraff. I, Pat Smyre, will my fluency in French to Nancy Putnam. I, Peggy Tallant, leave my hips to June Edwards. I, Jimmy Warf, will my bashful brown eyes to Maurice Poole. I, Shirley Wright, will my ability to finish school to Mary Jones. I, Jimmy Watterson, will my popularity to George Hite. Signed: Date: December 7, 1952 Testatrix By Mamie Gordon and Shirley Wright It is five-thirty, and another busy day is over in my second floor office in the Bell Telephone Building. As I make a last minute check of my work, my eyes wander to the calendar on my desk. Why, this is May 28, 1965, exactly twelve years since the 1953 class of Guilford High School graduated! Since then, the twenty-four members have drifted to all parts of the earth. Charlie Bondurant has taken over his father's garage. Funny—every car Charlie works on has something wrong under it. Ten-to-one, he's sleeping. Jimmie Carlisle has opened up his own dance school, Jimmie's Jiving Jitterbuggers . Herman Causby, now manager of Walker Avenue A P Store, hasn't yet persuaded Martha to give up her home economics teaching at Guilford High School and stay at home with their twelve children. Pete Driver, the class grumbler, is still grumb- ling this year because the Brooklyn Dodgers lost the World Series again. Johnny Dyson has finally landed a good job. He is a Fuller Brush man. Many husbands are looking for him because he sells every woman he meets one of every brush in the book. Jody Gordon and Laverne Pegg, Broadway blondes are still trying to convince Troutman's Beauty Salon that they are good enough to graduate. Vernon Hinshaw is a famous band leader in Hollywood. His time is divided between his wife, their Beverly Hills home, and his jazz band at the Brown Derby. Byron Hodgin and Sherry Puckett are married now and are rearing five little cheerleaders. Polly Jackson is married to her sailor. They are rearing a red-haired girl. Her husband thinks two red heads are better than one. Jimmy McDowell, Florenz Ziegfield the second, has opened his own burlesque show on Broad- way. Gretchen Collins, nee Mitchell, has moved to New York with Richard and their famous quad- ruplets who are advertised as raised on Pet milk. Confidentially she feeds them Kroger's milk. Their names are Richard, Ralph, Roy, and Robert. Bobby Nelson is in Europe now. He is touring over there as Mighty Nelson , the midget wrestler. Carolyn Pipkin gave up the idea of house- keeping and left with Miss Higgins to join Fred Waring's Pennsylvanians. Carolyn is Fred's fa- vorite soloist. The twins, Bill and Bob Ratledge, are in Washington with the F.B.I. Mr. Hoover says they are famous as twin detectives. With their twin act, they have scared many criminals into confessing. Eugene Reed still has his physique. He is greatly admired by the basketball players at Woman's College where he is coach. Glenn Stafford has the easiest life of all. He is floorwalker for McDowell's Follies on Broad- way. Guilford College has built a hospital and has our own Amanda Spencer as head nurse. She still finds it hard to resist certain males at Guilford College. Pat Smyre is now director of King's Mountain High School dramatics class. A change in her last name is in the making. What will it be? Peggy Tallant is now the shining star of Mc- Dowell's Follies on Broadway. Jimmy Warf is now James Wolfe , the new swoon star in Hollywood. His bashful, brown eyes have taken him places that his wit would not. Jimmy Watterson has advanced greatly in the last twelve years. He was promoted last week to manager of the lingerie department at Macy's in New York. Mrs. Shelton, your husband is waiting for you. With this, my mind rapidly jumped from my old classmates to the humdrum activities that confront a woman who works and keeps house at the same time. I carefully placed those high school memories in the niche of my mind that is reserved for such, with a realization that they would probably remain there until some future time when I would drag them out again for a pleasant hour. After the customary discussion, we started to work on the gym and made it into a ballroom in one week. Of course, it was work, but it was the most pleasant work we've ever done. For the first time, we really learned that no project can be carried on without the cooperation of every class member. The theme, Star Dust was carried out in detail; the girls were gorgeous; the food, delectable; the music, hot, and the dancing, divine. How glad we and our guests, the Seniors, were that we did not have it away from home. mm Ml Janice Coltrane Richard Davenport Keith Davis Marie Dyson Emilie Hassell George Hite Peggy Howard Ray Inman Nick Jenkins Carolyn Jessup Sally Johnson Mary Ellen Jones Bill Kendrick Durell Lefler Sharon Lockhart Brona Lowe James Needham Dick Ott Charles Pegg Nancy Putnam Carolyn Quakenbush Clara Shelton Buddy Siler Robert Staley Pat Steele J. With an overall record of five wins and two losses, the outmanned Hornets showed their spirit in the face of what appeared insurmountable obstacles. A three wins--two losses county record was good enough for third place in the final county standings. Halfback Ray Inman and Jimmy Watterson led the Guilford scorers with thirty-one and thirty points. Fullback Jimmy Wilmoth counted for thirteen, while the toe of guard Robert Driver was good for three points. The unsung heroes, the linemen, were led by the excellent play of end Bill Ratledge, tackle Dick Ott, and guard Nick Jenkins.
