A child is not to be fitted, shaped, or wrought into any given mold. He should rather, be allowed to grow at his own individual pace, through broadening and inspiring experiences. A childs natural growth should be guided and encouraged to the fulfillment not only of his present needs but to the utilization of all his latent capacities. The hope and the aim of a Teachers College should be to show that there is no roof to growth in the individual. With this concept in view there is no limit to the possibility of growth, nor to the teacher's share in the future h h - Y w et er it be in elementary education, music education, science' or the arts. PG Cluiiiie f' Q fn.. . DANBURY 3 STATE TEAC ER COLLEGE WEE COLLEGE DANBURY, CONNECTICUT , , i, , , ,, AROUND THE CAMPUS if L ig f, , 'N-.5-.f-.. A W E DEDICATE Throughout our childhood they listened to our dreams, our troubles, our hurts. And as we advanced in years there was always something for which We needed their willing guidance. Because we were their children, our needs became more important to them than their own, they gave up much so that we might have more. The decisions we reached were made with their sincere and helpful advice. Our biggest decision until this time has been to enter the field of education. Now, as we begin our teaching careers, let us think of their dreams -- for us to grow into good citizens of our day, able to carry out our responsibilities in the life ahead of us. They gave us fully, now let us give them our thanks: Respectfully, We dedicate this yearbook, as a sign of our commencement of a life you have opened and dreamed of for us, to you, wherever you may be, our Mothers and Fathers. mfg s A DM IN ISTRAT ION DR. ALFRED GEDDES Dean of Men Mr. Geddes, by acting with us and guiding us through our problems, has proven to be our loyal friend. His patience, good nature and eagerness to help others has won him the ad- miration of all. Never shall we for- get his soft spoken, cheerful Hello and friendly advice, nor his untiring and ceaseless efforts in our behalf. The high ideals toward which he has motivated us will be a constant force in the betterment of our lives. CLAIRE TRISCI-I Dean of Wonzen We shall always remember Miss Trisch for her friendly guidance and her sympathetic understanding of our problems. From the time of our first Contact with her as freshmen, she has impressed us with her warm per- sonality and genuine willingness' to co-operate in any situation. Serving capably in an advisory position, Miss Trisch is active in various student affairs through which many of us have had the opportunity to become better acquainted with her, She has been a strong guiding light reflect- ing her zeal for D. T. C. standards upon all its students. Our admiration for Miss Trisch will always remain with us. yi EDUCATION DEPARTMENT Dr. Edmund Cain, Arnold Hansen, Florine Townsend, Dr. Norman Reed PHYSICAL EDUCATION DEPARTMENT Dr. Alice Donnelly, Harvey Jessup, William Williams, Dorothy Holman ENGLISH AND SPEECH DEPARTMENT Adam Aitchisori, Mrs. Elizabeth james, Frederick Lowe, john Tufts. As a result of the cooperative work of the faculty and students we have had a self-inventory culminating in the visitation from our accrediting association. We have all been pleased by the many fine statements made about our accomplishments and we have also had help from our visitors in pointing out areas in which we may improve our- selves. Probably the greatest achievement as stated by our examin- ing group has been our ability to work together. This year we have had the joy of working.in a new Laboratory School. Roberts Avenue School is a fine building with the modern facilities which have been needed so badly for our whole professional program. The fact that it is a part of our campus gives us more op- portunities to see children working and playing. Our Auditorium-Classroom building, Berkshire Hall, will be in use to some extent this year. The Music students will probably ap- preciate its completion more than an other single group, as there are ample practice facilities. Also in process is the purchasing of the land and buildings E along Roberts Avenue and the west side of Eighth Avenue. This will give us at least one house to be used as a men's residence and also more land for playing area. The members of this graduating class will be greatly missed. You have served on com ittees, taken positions of responsibility and cooperated with other student groups and the faculty in every possible way. For this we are all deeply indebted to you and you should realize your Alma Mater is a better college because of you. By working together we have accomplished man things. I sin- cerely hope that in the future we may continue to succeed through cooperative activity. Even though you will not be with us on campus an longer, we shall look forward to the extension of your interest into your communities, so that Danbury Teachers College may always be represented and respected as a fine college. Two jam sessionsr and dance affairs were given in Curley Hall during October and Novemlierf-Sandwiched in between these were several field trips. One was the dedica- tion of the Henry Abbott Technical School, here in Danbury, at which the band was invited to plafy. The other was our trip to Hartford for the All-State Festival. There, during the day, the students observed the band, orchestra, and chorus rehearsals, and in the evening they attended a combined concert of these groups at the Bushnell Me- morial Auditorium. The next major event came November 18 and 19 when the department presented a one act operetta, Down in the Valley, by Kurt Weill. Each very successful per- formance was followed by a dance in Curley Hall to the coolH tunes of the jazz Beaux,', our department dance band. The following plans for the year's program included the sale of Christmas cards, the Grade School Instrumental Concert, Dr. Whitcomb's combined orchestra and band concert in the spring, and the publication of the ALUMNI NEWS, our department newsletter to alumni. For both the freshman and sophomore students it has been a year well spent, both educationally and socially. The election of the freshman officers to serve with the sophomores started off the year. Together we planned the Magazine Drive. When the time for our traditional Nov. 11 scrap drive came around, a tremendous increase in interest for the Department seemed to be aroused. It was a truly successful venture. With Christmas festivities in full swing, our Christmas banquet was greatly enjoyed by both students and faculty alike. After the excitement of Interim was over, we all started planning for The Eastern Colleges Science Conference held April 22 through April 24, The Conference was re- ceived with interest and enthusiasm. Before we realized it, up came graduation. For some it has pleasantly ended our formal education and for others of us it was another big step towards our educational goal. The entire college is represented on the C.G.A. council by members elected from the various classes and departments. C.G.A. dues are collected from all students and faculty in September and assigned to the specific student organizations which make up the Association. In this Way all major college functions are paid for at the beginning of the year, and more people are able to attend a maximum number of college events. The Library Committee and the Constitution are two of the group which are ap- pointed annually by the C.G.A. Council to improve the various aspects of D.T.C. col- lege life. L ORETTA GORMAN INT ERNATICDNAL RELATION S CLU B The International Relations Club is an organization which was formed at the request of a group of interested students to replace the Forum as an extra-curricular activity. The purpose of the club is to help students to understand the people, problems, and cultures of our complex world. Last spring the club was officially organized by C.G.A. and since that time mem- bership has doubled. The program of activities has expanded this year to include movies and speakers. It is hoped that an I.R.C. conference can be held at D.T.C. in the near future. Representatives from D.T.C. to various conferences at New England colleges have helped to make many people familiar with D.T.C. and its International Relations Club activities. Under the effort and thoughtful guidance of Dr. Lyman Burbank, faculty advisor, the club has enjoyed a very successful year. OFFICERS Preridenl ....................... ..................... THE SUPPLEMENT The SUPPLEMENT is a comparatively new organization at D.T.C. This weekly newssheet grew out of a desire to have a report of current and future happenings tak- ing place on the campus. The SUPPLEMENT first made its appearance a year ago. At first it was a typewritten sheet posted on the main bulletin board. As a result of its success, the SUPPLEMENT later appeared weekly, growing in circulation until now the demand exceeds the supply. With the spark of a freshman staff, the SUPPLEMENT has grown considerably and has taken its place as one of the most interesting of campus organizations. Among the highlights of the A.A. program this year have been the Broomstick Brawl, a very successful dance and social evening, a trip to the Ice Follies, a Block Dance during Orientation, the well-known Winter Weekend in New Hampshire, and the climax of the year, the annual A.A. Banquet. This group does much to stimulate interest and provide for leisure activities at D.T.C.
