K 8WfLOlf'l 0LWfL MISS LILLE HOWE In the death of Miss Howe, so long and com- pletely devoted to the educational and social ideals of Western College, we have sustained a great loss. She was a teacher in the widest and noblest application of the word. We are consoled by the memory of her lively and winning personality, and by the knowledge that her influence, which we cannot meas- ure, will continue with us here, and with her students wherever they may go. MR. WILLIAM GURNEY KIRBY Mr. William Gurney Kirby died last Decem- ber in his thirtieth year, after only a year and three months of service here. Within his short life he had been acclaimed by other musicians as a genius at choral conducting , within his short term of activity on our cam- pus he made himself felt as artist, teacher, and director. We have had an intimate taste of the meaning of leadership at its finest, and of the beauty of great music. The value of that experience cannot be lost. But Mr. Kirby's going is a great loss to the college, and to the world of music. She's altered a little: her cover's lighter, she's more compact, but she represents us keeping stride of the times. In this as in every other phase of life on the campus, here is a challenge met. With shortages of labor andivmaterials we've feared for her at times, but thanks to able workers and infinite faith, we've come through. Thus we present her to you-Our War issue of the Multi-a record of the school year from September T942 to June I943. Jean Boyd, Editor Caroline Farr, Photography Editor Nancy Meyer, Assistant Editor Mary Brennan, Art Editor Jane Luckham, Business Manager Jane Schneider, Copy Editor Crissy Jane Simons, Publicity Editor ROUNDMUP The Round-Up is the weekly word of the Campus. It became the size of a regular newspaper this year and under the able leadership of Goldstone, provided us with such valuable information as articles on point rationing, on WAACS and WAVES, and hints on saving in a time when nothing should be wasted. Its column summarizing the course of the war kept us well in- formed. The Round-Up has had its bad times too, but they've faced it and come out on top in true Round-Up form. Dorothy Goldstone, Editor-in-Chief Mary Jane Rehm, Feature Editor Crissy Jane Simons, Managing Editor Jane Ferris, Business Manager Dorothy Condit, Associate Editor Janet Shriver, Circulation Manager Bosson, Palmer, Wardlow, Critchell, Rogers, Winterfeldt, Rieley, Fatout, Reddert, Dukas, Walters, Maclnnis, LeMaster, Garrison, Auten, Hoffman, Stavrum, Stone, Hall, Hittle, S. Rehm, Kane. SCOPE Scope has had its second anniversary and, like all good children, has grown. It is now the size of a regular magazine and has even added to its thickness. We are proud of the clever caricatures on its cover, and the material inside which includes biographical sketches, our own poetry, short stories and articles. Both whimsy and realism may be found in its popular Kaleidoscope. Our Scope reflects Western, its ideas, and our interest in the outside world. Like The Unifed STaTes OovernmenT, iT has Three branches, The execuTive, The legislaTive and The judiciary. lnsTead of a police force we have The honor sysTem. The officers of The GovernmenT AssociaTion are elecTed by everyone in The college and all-college GovernmenT meeTings are held once a week To discuss maTTers of change in policy. Each of us is jusTly proud of our miniaTure democracy. CARMAN WOLFF, PresidenT - MARTHA McKEE, Vice-PresiclenT BARBARA ST. IT is The only organizaTion on The Campus which hopes To meeT as seldom as possible. This year, for insTance, vve've Tried abolishing The lighf-cuT SysTem and have acquired exTra week-ends for Honor sTudenTs. Such acTiviTies shovv our governmenT To be acTive and alive. MARTHA McKEE, Chairman - MARIAN PALMER, SecreTary WAR COUNCIL We have all been anxious to help the War in any way we could. Separate- ly we tried organizing programs and drives and then saw we needed something more. Thus the War Council was formed for the purpose of co- ordinating war activities on the Campus and furthering the War effort. Led by representatives from each class, the War Council has sponsored discussions of the cultures and customs of other peoples, organized scrap drives to collect old metal and cans, given dances and sold corsages, the proceeds of which have gone to relief organizations, and brought a new course in Morse Code and films of the War to our Campus. Success- fully, they have coordinated our War effort. INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS CLUB In the International Relations Discussions groups we try to answer for our- selves iust what we are fighting for. Around the fireplace at the Esterquest's home our ideas are discussed and experts are invited to guide us. We have based these discussions on the premise that an understanding of the War means a knowledge of events preceding it and a clear definition of the ideologies involved. On the basis of this new knowledge, we see more clearly what must be clone before there can be world peace. Y. W. C. A. The Y has branches and committees to answer the needs of all on the Campus. The Y began functioning when it welcomed freshmen with par- ties and mixers. Later we remember white candles, Christmas vespers and the sunrise Easter Service in the Nature Theatre. Those who attended Y conferences brought to us new ideas concerning economic and social prob- lems of all kinds. For us the Y has furnished that intangible something we all need. x 5. l Anders Baumgartel Bell Bower Boyd Bratton Buell Bunce Carmen Campbell Chamberlain Cleveland Condit Copley Daries Dean Dilatush Drochelman Eaton Ervin Forr Fatout Finlay Fruth Gons Hakes Hamilton Hannon Harrold Heinz Hilf Huber Kail Keim Kimball Larkins LUPOH THE CHOIR Malcolm Martin Merrill From the very first we heard about the Choir and MeYe our secret ambition was to become a member. Seriously though Miriam Fatout is our symbol. She represents all we would like to have shown had flashbulbs not been so scarce, she represents our new, curious outlook and our desire to help in every possible tield. Farming is our most obvious contribution for by growing our own vegetables we release more food for Army consumption. However, farming is only a small part ot it. Led by Chairman Mary Brennan, we bought stamps and bonds which were simultaneously votes tor a Bond Queen and later we clothed an imaginary soldier with our contributions. Aside from First-Aid and Home Nursing which we consider basic, we study Nutrition in order to understand food values, and typing and shorthand, hoping perhaps to be of use during the summer months. The War Council keeps us busy think- ing anddiscussing, the Social Committee under Betty Lloyd arranges dances and parties tor relaxation, the Science Colloquium under Stevie -more important than ever because this War is a War ot Science-keeps us well- informed through such mediums as the Science Open House, and teaches Morse Code and the principles ot flying through movies. Preparedness is our policy, and though we consider ourselves Jill's-of-all- Trades, strangely enough, we're masters of many. .
