The cold nights of early December brought about the death of John Lennon at the hand of an assassinis gun. And with the new year came a new president with hope for the 80's. His hopes were nearly shattered as an assassin named Hinckley fired shots at our new leader and brought about near fatal wounds. But, Reagan recovered and his hopes for America are still alive. As the Reagan era began, so did the era of government cutbacks and economic reforms. Perhaps the hardest of these cutbacks for students to accept concerns financial aid for students. The hostages were released and returned home to a hero's welcome, but the struggle for power in Iran continues. Cullowhee remained pretty much the same during the academic year 1980-81. The peacefulness of the valley was seldom interrupted, but the few interruptions suffered were fatal. Homecoming weekend proved to be one filled with tragedy as seven students lost their lives in automobile accidents. A dreary, sedate night became the scene of another tragedy as Joyner burned. But this time the losses were only materialistic. As Joyner burned, so did many campus organizations - including The Catamount. It looked for a time, as if the publication of The Catamount would be impossible. But somehow with the help of many interested people we were able to meet our deadlines. I would like to thank Harry Duke and Rick McDaniel for their efforts this summer in getting together last minute photographs so we could meet our deadlines. Also, I would like to thank Jim Buchanan and Tim Thompson for their help in getting our offices together. There are others whose help has been invaluable - among them Lisa Yates, John Kinney, and Cindy Hooper. I would also like to thank Dick Henson for his many long hard hours of work on this yearbook. And, of course I wish to thank Dr. Glenn Stillion, without his guidar.ce this publication would not have been possible. So here it is the l98l Catamount, hope you enjoy it. 8 M Elizabeth D. Mullis, Editor 2
