Here is a rundown of the 1961 Catamount football season: After trimming the Carson-Newman Eagles 12-10 in the season opener, the Cats lost their first conference game to the Appa- lachian Mountaineers 25-12. In the third game of the season, the University of Tampa squad combined a strong ground attack and swift passing to hand the Cats their second loss of the season, 24-13 Homecoming festivities were somewhat spoiled when the Ca- tawba Indians achieved their first conference win of the season by beating the Catamounts, 18-14. The Cats made a short-lived comeback by defeating the East Carolina Pirates, previously unbeaten, 7-6. The Lenoir-Rhyne Bears, fired up by the kidnapping of Joe Bear, IV, their mascot, retaliated by thrashing the Cats 24-14. The Elon Christians squeezed by the Catamounts, 11-9, which left the Cats with a 1-4 conference record. The Cats combined a field goal, a touchdown, and a strong defense to defeat Emory and Henry, 10-6, in a non-conference encounter Conference leader Newberry gave the Catamounts their worst beating of the season by defeating them, 47-17, in a conference game. In the final conference game of the season, the Catamounts boosted their conference record to two wins and five losses by beating Guilford 28-0. Dennis Dolinski End
