Editor-in-Chief Assistant Editor Business Manager FOR INTRODUCING US TO THE WEALTH OF THE PAST. . DR. ROSSER HOWARD TAYLOR and for his ability as a steadfast teacher, the Senior Class dedicates the 1962 CATAMOUNT to Dr How- ard Rosser Taylor Sincerity faithfulness ability each holds its place as one of the many characteristics of Dr Taylor This distinguished professor is author of ANTE- BELLUM SOUTH CAROLINA and SLAVE HOLDING IN NORTH CAROLINA As president of the Histori- cal Society of North Carolina, Dr Taylor exhibits his sincerity in all outside accomplishments. The former head of the Department of Social Sciences, Dr Taylor was appointed to the faculty in 1947. His faithfulness denotes his willingness to help students with any problems with which they might be confronted. Through the years, Dr. Taylor, whose classes are always both interesting and in- formative, has made history a fascinating sub|ect and has brought the past alive for countless students who left his classes with a fresh view of what history can mean when well-presented. Because of these ideal characteristics and his vivid personality, the Senior Class says thank you and goodbye — Dr Taylor. AND TO THE GRADUATING SENIORS MAY SUCCESS BE YOUR j REWARD FROM THE 1962 CATAMOUNT STAFF Foreword Composed of members from each class at Western Carolina College, the yearbook staff invites you to renew memories of the past year. As members of the staff and, traditionally, as Ca- tamounts we extend to all students and friends an invitation to meet our administration and faculty, get ac- quainted with our students, and enjoy our campus. Within these pages comes alive the congenial and informal atmosphere at- tributed to campus life at Western Carolina College. Success, failure, hap- piness, and melancholy are exemplified through such events as homecoming, pep rallies, bonfires, freshmen orien- tation, and hikes. Reality of future professions can be perceived as we ven- ture into new realms of study. Within our classes the spirit of W.C.C. is ex- hibited as it is at all other college events. The CATAMOUNT staff introduces you to Western Carolina College know- ing that you will love and appreciate it as we do. ' .,: - v.- : • -i - s« ki - Every step one takes toward the fulfilment of man ' s universal search for companionship leads him closer to the ultimate goal of social acceptability. Pleasure and relaxation play an important role in college life M k but one must have intellectual pursuits to balance the lighter activities. Preparation for daily living rakes more than mere physical nourishment the spirit of man must be fed to keep alive the completeness of humanity. Ml Campus 16 ■Administration 22 ' Faculty 27 . Here is a rundown of the 1961 Catamount football season: After trimming the Carson-Newman Eagles 12-10 in the season opener, the Cats lost their first conference game to the Appa- lachian Mountaineers 25-12. In the third game of the season, the University of Tampa squad combined a strong ground attack and swift passing to hand the Cats their second loss of the season, 24-13 Homecoming festivities were somewhat spoiled when the Ca- tawba Indians achieved their first conference win of the season by beating the Catamounts, 18-14. The Cats made a short-lived comeback by defeating the East Carolina Pirates, previously unbeaten, 7-6. The Lenoir-Rhyne Bears, fired up by the kidnapping of Joe Bear, IV, their mascot, retaliated by thrashing the Cats 24-14. The Elon Christians squeezed by the Catamounts, 11-9, which left the Cats with a 1-4 conference record. The Cats combined a field goal, a touchdown, and a strong defense to defeat Emory and Henry, 10-6, in a non-conference encounter Conference leader Newberry gave the Catamounts their worst beating of the season by defeating them, 47-17, in a conference game. In the final conference game of the season, the Catamounts boosted their conference record to two wins and five losses by beating Guilford 28-0. Dennis Dolinski End Jerry Adams Center ELON I I W.
