MARK TWAIN AND WILLIAM FAULKNER EMPHASIZE A VERY ALIVE LANGUAGE While many Western Branch High School students were taking a foreign language, the English Department had the difficult task of teaching the lan- guage they use everyday. The classes were divided into three groups, x, y, and z in which students were placed according to their abilities. The English teachers, headed by ileft to righti George Sweet, Susan White, Tommy Butt and Tanya Benton, all seem to be absorbed in in Mrs. Penl's lecture. 24 ileft to righti Miss Ellen Ellis English, Journalism Newspaper Sponsor Mrs. Francis Bishop LongwoodICollege; 3.5. Through reading, writing, and speak- ing students come in contact with various ideas and issues. They studied stimulating and entertaining literature ranging from Mark Twain to William Faulkner. That sentence summarized the ideas of the Math De- partment this year. The emphasis fell on preparation for future life. The non-college bound students were offered courses in General Mathematics. For those wishing to further advance themselves, Pre-Alge- bra, Algebra I and II awaited them. College bound math students bene- fitted from Geometry, Advanced Alge- bra and Trigonometry, and Advanced Math. The Advanced Moth classes, especially designed for those intend- ing to go to college, included such courses as; calculus, probability, and logic.
