Like the sculptor who molds his clay with utmost care and pride, the ones who love us most dedicate unending time and effort to the shaping of a unique individual. As the texture is imprinted deep into the clay’s surface, necessary values of honesty, love and ambition are impressed upon us. Alleviating the pains and sorrows of growing up, the fears of the unknown, and sharing in the happiness of life, they praise and encourage us to strive to be the best that we can. They give us invaluable advice and suggestions so that their influence is positive and their clay will take on a form that they can be proud of. The final touches are added as we set out on our own to grow and develop. Eager to learn and experience new things, we experiment with unending colors and glazes. The final coat is applied in preparation for the firing, hoping that the sculpture will make it through the baking intact, the finished product a work of art. The members of the class of 1984 would like to express our admiration and respect for the selfless love and support we have received. The 1984 yearbook, “Our Town,” is dedicated to the parents of our class as a small token of our appreciation. jjjpusand dajfr. Contents Seniors 15 Faculty 67 Underclassmen 79 Sports 101 Activities 131 Ads 153 We gratefully acknowledge Thorton Wilder’s Our Town for the text of this yearbook. 11 Mr. Ryan Class Advisors Four years have passed since you took on the job of advising our class and in this time we have grown and experienced the joys and sorrows that come with life. Our high school career, “the best years of our lives,” has lived up to this quotation which we have often heard. With your encouragement and dedication, we have developed life-long relationships and worked together on different projects to make our class successful both financially and socially. Our dances, proms, and field trips have enriched our quest for knowledge and sparked many cherished memories. Thank you, Mr. Ryan and Mrs. Farley, for the faith, determination and endless hours that you gave to bring our class together, making these years the happiest times of our lives. Mrs. Farley Voarhnnk Mrs. Serra Mrs. Berardo As the years go by we will always look back on the knowledge, invaluable experiences, relationships, and unending laughs of our four years of Westerly High. A storehouse of treasured memories, the yearbook is a priceless piece of the past Much time, effort, and dedication on the part of the yearbook staff goes into its creation, but without the guidance, experience, and support of our advisors, it would never have been possible. The Yearbook Staff of 1984 and the members of our class, would like to thank Mrs. Serra, Mrs. Berardo, and Mrs. Woodruff for the enthusiasm, devotion, and sharing that it took to make the West'lyan a success. 12 Mrs. Woodruff Photography Editors Debbie Chapman, Joshua Bewlay Layout Editor Brenda Sposato Co-Editors Jennifer Brown, Christine Dawson 13 Business Editor Mildred Chin Sports Editor John Feraco Clerical Editor Deanne Storti Advertising Editor Kathleen McGregor . “This is the way we were: in our growing up and in our living. ” SENIORS SENIORS SENIORS SENIORS SENIORS SENIORS SENIORS Class Officers To my fellow classmates and friends: Each one of us represents a unique and valuable thread which has been woven into the varied and vibrant quilt which symbolizes our Senior Class. The happiness which we have enjoyed throughout the past four years colors our creation with robust hues, and the lessons which we have learned warm us to future challenges. Like any home-made article, we do not lack imperfections, but we may take justifiable pride in the culmination of our efforts. We can now look to tailor the future to fit our dreams, but we must always keep in mind the fundamental lessons of the past. In retrospect, it has truly been an honor and a privilege to serve this class for four consecutive years. The experience has been a prudent teacher; my only hope is that 1 have proved deserving of your confidence. I sincerely thank you for your help and support, and I pray that all of you may find happiness and success in your future endeavors. James Steven Toscano Senior Class President 1984 P.S. A dministry tion William R. Barrs Walter Gibson Warren LeValley Principal Gr. 7 8 Administrative Assistant Director of Guidance Salvatore J. Augcri Superintendent To Members of the Class of 1984: Your graduation from Westerly High School will place you in the adult world of numerous challenges and opportunities. However, you are cautioned that entrance into this world will also expose you to a society with unprecedented concerns about international conflict, environmental contamination and economic uncertainty. I am confident that your parents and teachers have properly prepared you for your entrance into this next phase of life. You are urged to proceed with awareness, confidence, and courage. The destiny of our great country is dependent upon your educational preparation and commitment to carry on the traditions of hard work, desire to succeed, and sincere concern for fellow man. Hopefully, in addition to providing academic instruction, your'high school years have taught you to become “caring people.” I congratulate you on this memorable occasion and extend my sincerest best wishes for a healthy and prosperous future. Sincerely, Salvatore J. Augeri Superintendent of Schools Warren Pclton Assistant Superintendent To the Class of 1984: During your high school years, you have been given the opportunity to gain the wisdom and knowledge necessary for a successful beginning of your adult life. Graduation marks that beginning. You have your foundation, as did the Town of Westerly. What you do with this foundation is as important to you as it was to the beginning of Westerly over three hundred years ago. Westerly was as solid as granite; you must be solid with confidence. Grow as did your community, with pride; have loyalty and trust in yourself, as did your community; appreciate challenge, as did Westerly; and use your past experiences to become confident and stable, yet flexible, in order to change for the better, as did Westerly. Your diploma is the roots which give you depth and strength; the fruit you bear depends upon you. Remember your roots, and prove yourself as has Our Town. Sincerely, Albert A. But it was a year of renewed hope for the future, the Papal visit to Central America, worldwide antinuclear demonstrations. It was a great year to be an American, especially one in high school, about to inherit the most powerful nation on the globe in this, the most critical time in World History. In the end, the hope of youth outshined even the gloomiest events of 1983. Lebanon dominated the world scene in 1983. Israel, incensed at the continuing attacks upon its border by the PLO, invaded Lebanon and the dust still hasn’t settled. An international peace keeping force, made up largely of U.S. Marines, was sent in an attempt to stabilize the situation. It was unfortuantely, a plan that backfired. On October 23, a red Mercedes truck, filled with two tons of TNT, crashed through a wrought iron gate into the Marine compound. The four story building collapsed, killing most of its three hundred occupants. Subsequent investigations revealed that security at the compound had been lax. But this did nothing to soothe the anguish felt by the families of the dead Marines. Although deeply saddened by the terrorist attack, the President said that the U.S. would continue to keep troops in Beirut. —Matt Panciera It was an historic event when astronaut Sally Ride stepped into the space shuttle Columbia. Sally became the first woman to go into space in the United States. She was part of a five man” crew to enter orbit to conduct experiments. The mission was also to deliver two sattilitcs. Sally, a scientist, has been with NASA for quite some time. Upon the arrival of the shuttle at Andrews Airforce Base in California, the news media and press pushed and shoved to get a picture of Ms. Ride departing from the aircraft. When asked about her mission, Sally Ride replied, “It was Great.” -Randy Rauso Pope John Paul II, in yet another attempt to directly help his people, made a seven-nation visit to Central America. The internal revolutions, which had torn the Church apart, were the Pope’s major concern. The people turned out in record numbers for a glimpse of the supreme pontiff. The government leaders were not so receptive. In Nicaragua, the Pope was heckled by supporters of the Sandinista government, whose leaders include five priests, in defiance of the Pope’s demands that clergy not hold political office. The most important result of John Paul’s visit was the hope he gave to the people of Central America. Too often they had been forgotten or simply used by powers both in and outside Central America. The Pope’s visit was an assurance to the people of these war-torn countries that they were the ones that counted. — Malt Panciera Korean Air Lines Flight 007 was traveling in the early morning darkness of September 1, 1983, when it was shot down by a Soviet Fighter. All 269 passengers and crew died soon thereafter in the icy waters of the Sea of Japan. The shock waves of this horrible act were felt all over the world. In the U.S., various sanctions against the soviets were discussed, but they never came about. Some people, however, took the international dispute into their own hands, such as the people in a town in New Hampshire, who boycotted all Russian Vodka. The Russians countered the worldwide criticism with the accusation that Flight 007 was involved in a spy mission. In the end, the people most hurt by the tragedy were the families of the dead ones. For the most part, they were forgotten in the flurry of accusations that followed the incident. —Matt Panciera I Twenty years after those fatal shots in Dallas, Texas, John F. Kennedy was remembered in a special anniversary report in Newsweek magazine. The thirty Americans interviewed took time out to reflect on Kennedy and his influence on the nation then and now. Despite differences of opinion, the group concurred that he had, in fact, set and example for all of his successors. Perhaps the wildest party thrown in 1983 was the centennial gala in honor of the Brooklyn Bridge. Completed in 1883, the bridge spanning the Hudson from Manhatten to Brooklyn, was hailed as the world’s greatest engineering feat. It was a mile long and at the time its 276 foot towers were the nation’s tallest structures. The city spent $200,000 on fireworks display that was absolutely dazzling. The day after the celebration, the bridge, as dependable as ever, carried on as usual: 1 50,000 people crossed over its magnificent mile. —Matt Panciera Fashion this past year varied almost as much as the hemlines did. It can be said that 1983 was definately an “anything goes” year. The straight-laced preppies and the radical punk rockers still lingered, but many new trends hit the fashion scene. One of the biggest trends being the 50’s revival, including button-back skirts, straight-cropped pants, the color of black combined with pink and grey, and polka dots. The revival was short-lived, but many new trends sprang from it. Argyle everything, the vest in numerous shapes and sizes, soft angora sweaters, big, bright accessories and jeans all arose from this revival. The last, jeans, became the most popular — striped jeans, dyed jeans, cropped jeans, mini skirts, and the jean jacket. Another of the new trends showed the influence of the movie “Flashdance”, with shoulderbaring torn sweatshirts and T-shirts. Other fashion attractions through the year included large, bold plaids, oriental accents, and linen. In high fashion the striking news was the long lean line of the dress, short evening dresses, and an overabundance of black, sequins, and beads. —Lisa DiNapoli A Cabbage Patch Kid was this years’ most popular Christmas item. Though homely, most agree that they are irresistible. These dolls, made by Coleco based on the originals by Xavier Roberts, a Georgia sculptor, are not just purchased, but “adopted.” Each Cabbage Patch Kid comes with a birth certificate and a set of adoption papers. Each has a unique name, taken from the 1938 birth records of Georgia. Despite their homeliness, the Cabbage Patch Kids had the lure of the unattainable, and one parent, Kansas City postman Edward Pennington, flew to London to get one for his five year old daughter. Both radio talk shows and some stores chose to give these “babies” away or award them as prizes. Some business-minded individuals took advantage of the situation and sold previously purchased or won dolls at highly inflated prices, often for as much as $500. Lewis lead his teammates to two American sweeps in both the 100-meter race and the long jump. With their victories at Helsinki, we look to them for gold at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. —Debbie Chapman COLLEGE BASKETBALL CHAMPION North Carolina State HOCKEY — STANLEY CUP CHAMPION New York Islanders TENNIS — WIMBLEDON CHAMPIONS John McEnroe Martina Navratilova GOLF — LEADING MONEY WINNERS Hal Sutton JoAnne Carner TRACK — HELSINKI WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP Carl Lewis Mary Decker There are few athletes in the world more popular and exciting to watch than Dr. J. — Julius Erving, of the Philadelphia 76’ers. Through six NBA seasons, Doctor J. had been unable to gain the prestigious championship ring. But the 1983 Philadelphia 76’ers blasted their way through all opponents and finally brought Julius Erving the championship ring that he truly deserved. —John Feraco In sports, by far the biggest story was the end of the world’s longest winning streak. Australia II beat Liberty in the seventh race, of the America’s Cup — a prize which had called the New York Yacht Club its home for 132 years. Earlier in the competition, there had been much controversy over the Aussies’ winged keel, but in the end everyone acknowledged the keel as “fair and square”. —-Matt Panciera And Cabbage Patch Kids Cheers and Dynasty Joan Rivers and Eddie Murphy Ivy League Schools mini-skirts AT T personal home computers sushi The Police, Michael Jackson, Boy George Reagonomics Tom Cruise and Risky Business horror movies Flashdance fashions Break Dancing Mr. T. and A-Team Action Figures M A S H James Watt Racial Ethnic jokes That's Incredible “Ma Bell” Pacman Spam HBO Star Wars Trilogy Smoking Valley Girls Punk Rockers Star Wars Action Figures . . . Student Council events this year have included the Victory Dance-the first of a number of dances to be held in the new gymnasium. There was also a concert- dance featuring “Roomful of Blues,” and a Health Fair. A Seminar on Teenager and Alcohol was also sponsored. A new sound and lighting system was purchased for the auditorium this year. Many other student activities were funded by the council this year. Considering all these events, the 1983-84 year has been a productive one. V. Pres. — Josh, Trcas. — Corri, Pres. — Gina. We try to present fifth graders with the facts about smoking including the dangers, the cost and the consequences. We want them to make responsible choices about smoking, choices based on knowledge rather than on stereotypes. In the future we hope that the function of our group will expand, but for now we’re happy to reach the fifth graders. Youth Council On Smoking I. to r. row I J. Brown. J. Fcraco. C. Cinami, C. Panciera Established on January 6, 1983, by the Westerly School Committee, SCAP, the Secondary Curriculum Advisory Panel consists of concerned parents, staff, administration, and students. Together SCAP participants discuss issues concerning the secondary curriculum and then report their recommendations to the School Committee. SCAP Stacy, Peter Lisa. Bethany The National Honor Society is a select group of students who satisfy certain criteria. All members of the National Honor Society are chosen on the basis of leadership ability, character, community service, and scholarship. The academic qualifications for a junior in the National Honor Society are very competitive. After five semesters a junior must have an A+ average in Level II courses with no C’s, D’s, or F’s. As a senior an A average must be maintained in Level II courses with no D’s or F’s. These high achievers are initiated into the society during a candlelight ceremony. Thus, the National Honor Society designates only those students who exhibit academic excellence, service, leadership, and character. National Honor Society I. tor. row IJ. Brown. L. Giardino, C. In 1900, the company delivered the first submarine HOLLAND, and since then has built over one-half of all the submarines for the U.S. Navy. In 1954, it launched the world’s first nuclear submarine, NAUTILUS. It also designed the Navy’s fleet of ballistic missile submarines and built GEORGE WASHINGTON, the lead ship. Today, Electric Boat Division, as designer and builder of the new Trident missile submarine, remains the free world’s leader in submarine technology, continuing to produce the most efficient and sophisticated undersea craft in the world. As a final thought: “Don’t be dismayed at good-by a farewell is necessary in ordi And meeting aj ' is certain for 18S Good-bye, good-bye high school Good-bye to clocks ticking, late bells ringing,, overcrowded hallways, term papers, loudspeaker interruptions, morning notices, released time, and Westerly bulldogs. Hello, world, we look forward to new horizons, faraway places, friendships, and experiences A chance to begin anew and grasp the boundless opportunities available to our aspiring and eager minds. We welcome the many wonderful things that life has to offer and strive to make our every dream a reality. -adapted from Emily’s farewell speech -Our Town In Memoriam Through the hard times and the struggling, Danny never showed any bitterness or grief, never sought pity, but rather brushed aside the inevitable and became a part of our class as a friend and classmate. With courage and determination he accepted each day as a gift. With tremendous effort he accomplished the many things we take for granted. Never hinting at the pain, he selflessly brightened our lives and the classroom with his wit and humor and was always there with a smile and an encouraging word. Rather than give in, he bravely accepted the situation put before him and lived his life to the fullest - enjoying a cherishing, and appreciating each wonderful moment. It is difficult to accept the death of one so young taken in the prime of life. But in this case, it is God's blessing that Danny is no longer suffering. We, the class of 1984, although saddened at his parting, are sincerely thankful to have known and loved him. ■SPOT a ¥ mm- w Daniel D.
