We Welcome You To The Land Of Enchantment Aristocracy Page 16 The Wizards Page 69 Be Patient With Yourself, Grow In Your Own Way, In Your Own Time. Look To This Day. We Shall Never Pass This Way Again. 4 5 8 12 THE KNIGHTING CEREMONY As we achieve the goals that we set for ourselves in our lifetimes, we will always recognize a special person or inspiration which has helped us on our way. Too many times we fail to recognize the importance of the guidance we have had, but there is always a time when we look back and finally understand the full meaning of a friend. Our four years in high school have been filled with struggles and successes. Finally, we have reached the point in our lives where we can leave the physical presence of the high school behind and take with us only the memories. Now we can look back on our years at Westerly High School and realize the importance of the guidance that we've had. The members of the class of 1981 would like to formally recognize the support and leadership of a very special friend. This 1981 yearbook, Enchantment,” is dedicated to Mrs. Janice Careau in return for the efforts and hours that she gave us to help create some of the best years of our lives. Mrs. Janice Careau 14 16 CLASS OFFICIALS Time cannot steal the treasures That we carry in our hearts Nor even dim the shining thoughts Our cherished past imparts And memories of the ones we’ve loved Still cast their gentle glow To grace our days and light our paths Wherever we may go Jean Kyler McManus Class Treasurer Donna Class Secretary Debbie and Vice President Mary Lou Social Chairperson DeeDee To the Class of ’81 As we exit from our high school years, we should reflect on our reasons for study. Perhaps the greatest reason we went to school was to learn about people. Whether we have tried or not we have been a part of the living and breathing microcosm which is called Westerly High. Through this learning we should face the future with the hopes that each of us will serve humanity and that none of us will detract from Mankind. We should not look with pessimisism towards the future. Let the members of the class of 81 be a shining light to all people, a glowing flame of idealism. Also let us be practical and realize when our goals are too far ahead to be attained. Mostly, though, let us spread love. Love conquers all boundaries and destroys all problems. We must always remember that the only way to destroy an enemy is to love him and make him your friend. Good luck to the class of '81. May the road before your feet be filled with happiness. May all your dreams become realities. and may the ones you love, love you back. I thank you for four years of infinite joy. May God bless you always. I don’t know about you. but I’ve got some living to do. Come on Class of '81 the road goes ever on and on to places we haven't heard of yet. This is an end and a beginning. I’m kind of excited. The eventful experience, which was to be filled with heartache, happiness. and especially growth, was to make a lasting impression on these participants. On a crisp September morn, the suntanned gentry joined the upperclassmen and traveled, in carriages, to a large palace surrounded by playing fields and roads leading to other parts of the Kingdom. In this palace, respectively named Westerly High, the four estates gathered together and each year brought progress to a higher position among the estates. The gentry began their fulfilling experience in the fourth estate or commonly known as the Freshmen Class. The first year under the palace regime was characterized by discovery. Members of the fourth estate, who had gained a new sense of freedom and determination, were beginning to develop their talents in areas other than academics. Many freshmen explored the fields of literature, government. music, drama, and athletics through organizations established by the palace hierarchy. As the year progressed and the freshmen gained a greater understanding of themselves, the officials of the palace decided to commence the annual meeting of the estates. Elected to voice the opinions of the fourth estate and provide leadership were Steve Magowan. Ericka Hemphill. Laura Sminkey. Mary Jo Terranova, Lori Serra. Scott Demirs, Mary Palazzolo. Sherry Gencarrelli. and Patti Berardo. After a year filled with many rewards and much growth, the freshmen celebrated their move to the third estate at a festive gathering. A Time For Us. The summer's warm and soothing days were gone. The new sophomores” left the beach behind and once again embarked towards the palace in the center of the Kingdom. As members of the third estate, the youth had gathered more prestige, but still looked toward a future containing higher levels of learning and growth. Several members of the estate perfected their talents and represented the palace in competitions throughout the Kingdom: Lynanne Bal-leli, Chris Giordano, Steve Magowan and Brad Vuono were the delegates from Westerly in the R.l. Society of Chemists, and Karen Smith was among the leading mathematicians of the day. The mighty Bulldogs also continued to gain prowess on the playing field. As the year progressed, another meeting was called to hear the suggestions of the citizens. The representatives of the third estate were Jim Silva. Elaine Wohlgemuth. Laura Sminkey, Mary Jo Terranova. Mary Palazzolo. Patti Berardo, Deidre Crowley. Scott Demirs, and Steve Magowan. With a greater confidence in themselves, the sophomores were able to reach out and discover the specialness and beauty in other individuals. This realization led to close friendships within the class. The joy and thankfulness of having a special person to share all the happiness and disappointments was expressed by the third estate at a jovial celebration You've Got A Friend.” The progression to the second estate was a stepping-stone in the growth of the individuals. After gaining much responsibility and independence through their summer jobs, the juniors” were eager to begin one of the most chal-langing years of their careers. Faced with numerous examinations and other documents to review, the members of the second estate began to speculate on their own goals-, whether they be universities, trades, apprenticeships, or knighthood. Although much emphasis was placed on the preparation for the future, the juniors enhanced their friendships and attended many social events in the family’s horse-drawn carriage. One popular sight was the mighty Bulldogs, who continued to engage in heroic and chivalrous deeds on the playing field. The rivalry on Turkey Day and the performance of the first place girls’s basketball team were especially pleasing sights. In the midst of all these activities, the estates once again joined together for their annual meeting. The second estate was finely represented by Steve Magowan. John Federico, Debbie Morrone, Mary Jo Terranova, Carla Panciera, John Coulahan, Scott Demirs, Tricia Drake, Dave Lombardo. Karen Smith, and Colleen Sullivan. At the end of the session, the King awarded official decrees to those citizens who displayed the greatest potential and who had served the Kingdom loyally. As the youth’s reign as the second estate came to a close, they declared their excitement and enthusiasm about progressing to the first estate at a formal ball. Walking On Air. After the summer’s heat began to fade and silence settled over parts of the Kingdom, the long awaited position of the first estate or nobility was within reach. Flowever, disputes between Kingdom officials and the palace rulers prevented the citizens from returning to the palace. After three extended weeks of vacation. the title of seniors was granted to the first estate. The seniors soon realized the responsibility and work which accompanied the glory of the nobility class. The time had come for important decisions to be made; decisions Soccer Team, who had captured the division title. Upon the closing of the final meeting of the estates, the first estate engaged in many festive events including the Hallow-een Party, the Thanksgiving Victory Dance, the senior picnic, and the senior and honors banquets. In the beginning of spring when all the world blooms into new life, the first estate gathered together at an elaborate ball to give thanks and celebrate their individual growth and more importantly the closeness they have experienced as a class. The year passed quickly and the heat of which were to shape the nobles lives. Many began to apply to institutions of higher learning while others prepared to face the wide-ranging job market. Meanwhile the palace officials called for the annual meeting of the estates. Presiding over the meeting were the delegates from the first estate: Steve Magowan, Mary Lou Morrone, Debbie Morrone. Donna Shaffer, Dee Dee De-Vore, Steve Cinami, John Coulahan, Scott Demirs, Tricia Drake, Dave Lombardo, Colleen Sullivan, and Brian Waterman. One of the highlights on the agenda was the crowning of the Westerly Fiigh School summer set over the Kingdom. The time had come for the official knighting ceremony of the first estate. On this night the seniors reflected upon the beauty of the past four years, the friendships which have grown and the many learning experiences. But they also glanced into the future) a place where anything is possible. and where opportunity, new friendships, and growth await them. This is not an official ending, for the members of the first estate will continue on their journey to make new discoveries and reach for new horizons. 50 Our class musicians, Sandy and Frank, are to the left. This statement can apply to our school years, also. What kind of people the school turns out depends on the way they have been taught. One of the more important people who shaped our way of thinking and acting this year was Suzanne Doherty, our Home Economics teacher and class advisor. I’ve always enjoyed working with people, especially children. We can tell! She is continually there when she is needed and has always been interested in this class. I’ve been with you since 7th grade. We came to this school together. I’ll be sorry to see you leave. We’ll be sorry to leave her, to, for she has influenced us in the right way — pushed us in the right direction. We will always be grateful to her for this. Thanks! Francesca Bedell B.S., M.S. Not knowing what to expect after being absent from the league for two years, the Bulldogs, discour-agmgly. began the season by losing 3 out of the first 4 games. They got right back in there, working harder than they had all season to turn it completely around and won each of the following games, with an air of dignity. You would have to give most of the credit to the coaches. tri-captain Tom Cimalore admits, for doing a great job and. most importantly, never giving up on us. This gave them a feeling of confidence stepping on that field at K 00 a m. on November 28. but not enough to eliminate the pressures felt by every senior in the most important game of their high school years. Tom adds, you're not only representing yourself and team, but you’re representing your hometown. The game was like being on seesaw, with the lead changing hands 5 times throughout the game, but finally coming out with the superior team on topi” As Tom proudly puts it. The key to our success, rather than good potential, was working hard and doing it together as a team. We had a team giving 100% of everything it had rather than a team made up of individuals.” L.E.H. I can't explain it. It’s really a high. The best high you can get. It’s just unexplainable. The Bulldogs played an exciting season and finalized it by the victorious Turkey Day game. The two teams rallied on the Westerly field until the fourth quarter finally ended with an ultimate score of 32-19. Among all those who achieved yard gains, those responsible for the three touchdowns were junior quarterback Rob Sciro. John Falcone, and Paul Angelo, both senior players. Junior Steve Antoch kicked two extra points and senior Criag Eleazer caught the toss for a two point conversion. In Turkey Day thriller, one of the best ever played, both teams scored three touchdowns, but Westerly made good on all three of its conversions. states Westerly Sun. What helps these players out there on the field to work together as a real team? Bob answers. The team is like one big family. Everyone helps each other out (on and off the field). The team is excellent as friends — excellent in everywayl There were problems of pressure and injuries going into and even during the game. Bob emphasizes. We had alot of pressure on ourselves because this would be the 10th victory in a row and we might have been marked as the team that lost. Plus we wanted it a little more than they did and we won. WE WON!” LEH 109 SOCCER Another Year Bites The Dust The team really played well this year.” Chris Arnold recollects. I think that having 3 captains was the reason we all pulled together. We needed discipline.” The Bulldogs accomplished great many victories during the 1980 playing season as the scoreboard represented below clearly will explain. Coach Serra’s men really proved themselves in the Division One-B Championship of the Rl Interscholastic Soccer League with an impressive 15-1 -2 record. There was. of course, adequate recognition for the Ston-ington victory making it 16-10. As a result of all this success, the Bulldogs ventured into the playoffs with LaSalle. Due to incontestable difficulties the Bulldogs had a fall out. Taking in the considerations that we played on an away field which was somewhat larger than our own was one problem our team had to work with and adjust to. Chris points out. I felt we should have beat LaSalle but our injuries really hurt us. They take the desire out of playing. You can’t work to your maximum capacity.” The Bulldogs suffered defeat in that quar terfinal game against LaSalle with a final score of 3-1. That year we had made it to the playoffs but lost the championship. Coming back in my junior year we had a young team which had to be rebuilt. That year we came in 4th place, just missing the playoffs. This year soccer players finalized the sea son by losing the state championship game against LaSalle in the quarterfinals. But that’s not the only championship our Bulldogs com- peted in this year. Area teams were invited to participate in The Wilson Cup Championship. This championship was a tournament of 4 teams competing on Columbus Day Weekend sponsored by Wilson Publishing Company. On day one of the tournament. Chariho beat North Kingston 2- and the Bulldogs defeated South Kingston 30. On Columbus Day. we proced-ed with Chariho into a final match. There was much rivalry on and off the field but the Bulldogs managed to leave as the victors with a final score of 3-1. Each team member received cross pen sets inscribed with Wilson Cup Tournament 1980 along with a certificate for participating. The team, as a whole, received a large trophy. The Bulldogs had a successful season nonetheless and these games leave them with an unofficial season record of 1800. WESTERLY — The summer was slowly expanded into late September for Westerly residents as they waited for School Board Officials and the Westerly Teachers Association to settle their differences. The negotiations were characterized by confusion, but the major differences came down to teachers’ salary, job security, and working conditions. To increase the problems of the already troubled School Committee, the Bus Drivers Union threatened to strike if their contract wasn’t settled. In the midst of the hostility in Westerly, the School Board set the opening date of school for September 12th. However, teachers boycotted classes and continued their negotiations at the Federal Mediation Office in Warwick. After 22 grueling hours of negotiations, talks broke off and the teachers continued to camp out in Warwick. Parents and students who were now very concerned and upset, began to attend meetings to remedy the situation. The School Committee then took action and asked for a court injunction forcing the teachers back to classes. After delays, a Superior Court Judge ruled in favor of the School Board on September 26th. On September 29th School began without contracts. Talks were at a standstill for the following month. Teachers, who were upset with the situation, set another strike deadline for October 26th. The day before the strike deadline, the Governor stepped in and persuaded both sides to go into binding arbitration. When the arbitration hearing ended, the impartial arbitrator decided in favor of the Westerly Teachers Association. Then school finally returned to normal. The Iranian government under the leadership of Ahatollah Khomeni demanded that the exiled Shah be returned to Iran for trial. However, the United States government kept its promise to the exiled Shah and insured his safety by not meeting the Iranian demands. In the summer of 1980, an unsuccessful rescue mission killed eight American servicemen. When the exiled Shah died of cancer later in the year, Iran posed greater threats to the US and the hostages. Finally, as President Carter ended a term filled with 14 months of difficult negotiations, US and Iranin officials reached an agreement; the hostages were now free. Americans everywhere decorated the land with yellow ribbons to welcome home their 52 fellow citizens for whom they had prayed for these past 14 months. Once again, Americans truly felt proud of their nation and its people. American Celebration At almost the same moment that the hostages were freed, America joined in another celebration — the inauguration of President Ronald Reagan. Reagan's presidency marked a new beginning for a proud nation and a movement back to strong, conservative ideals. In his Inaugural Address. President Reagan said that this would be an era of National renewal. For whatever the new President planned for America's future, this day was a great beginning. So as we look back into this cold and snowy winter, let us not forget that ray of sunshine, of hope that brought all Americans together in celebration — January 20. 1981. L .IK Page 146 2. Without them we would never have managed. — the Janitors, for always unlocking the doors for us. — Mr. Dunn and Mr. Lombardi, for allowing us all our activities and giving us the priviledge of our own yearbook room. — Monsier Bruce Dupuis, for, without his help, encouragement. understanding, and sense of humor our book would not have been possible. — Mr. John DeWale, for his patience when we were not sure what pictures we wanted, and his expertise because he was sure. — Mr. Angelo, for getting us off to a good start, picking us out a great bunch of editors, and making all those trips to the bank for us. ver • Imports i Watch Hill By Appointment 178 The Front Porch D’ANGELO Submarines, Syrians.
