OjCMMPU'D WHS ’so ZMS OJCVMPJC JDSAjC Let us not deal with what the Olympics means to the winners but rather what it takes to be able to participate. training, like High School, helps in perfecting development of the body and mind. It also prepares its participants to achieve all that they set out to do. The development of the body can be seen_ throughout the training but perhaps of greater importance is the training of the mind. Learning to work with others is the foundation upon which winners are built Without someone to share the triumph of victory and the agony of defeat” it would not be worth the effort. It is through constant encouragement that we keep reaching for that seemingly impossible goal. Winning complements the dedication and hard work involved; but should not become the sole reason for making the effort. Achieving success in High School requires devotion, discipline and training as the Olympics In both areas a participant must learn to discipline himself. He must be able to organize his time placing his committment first and accept the criticism of those trying to help When the devotion is strong the discipline comes easy. With these things in mind, the participant is now ready to achieve all that is possible. “For what a man can conceive and believe, he can achieve.” evewzs Am PAKzo? weszspcv MJ0M seHooz ozvmpjzs Special Commentator Commissioner Of The Olympics Assistant Commissioners Mead Coach Assistant Coaches Statisticians (fold Medalists W.M.S. For the Class of 1980 these past four years have been a struggle, but the struggle has been tempered by our coach. A coach stands with the team side by side whether it is reaching for the ultimate or just scraping the bottom of the barrel looking for a way out. For those who did not realize it, the Class of 1980 has been in both places. Now we are Seniors and in a few days we will be Graduates and the memories will flash back: to the first successful dance, to the endless hours of decorating for the proms, and the constant hassle of class meetings. Through all our financial problems and all our class functions our “Olympic Coach’ has been there helping us strive for the gold. And so we would like to dedicate the 1980 Yearbook, “The Olympics, to our coach and advisor, Mrs. Judith Colucci. To the class of 1980 As you prepare to take your place in society may I ask that you remember that in every man there is something we may learn, and in that respect, we shall ever remain a pupil. The truth that each of you seeks may not make you rich, but it will make you free. Go Forth! Conquer your worlds! Try not to forget the good times and those who have loved you most. F.J. Torromeo Superintendent of Schools ASSJSZAMZ COMMJSSJOMKS Warren J. Pelton Assistant Superintendent of Schools Salvatore Augeri Administrative Assistant to the Superintendent Class of 1980: Work to most of us means a forty hour week resulting in 2,000 hours of being on the job every year. But work is more than an investment in time, more than simply a means of earning a living. It can be an opportunity to really make a difference — to influence events, to change lives. A major requirement for anyone to be a success is to have a true sense of priorities. How you view yourself plays a vital role in how you choose to spend your life. Planning a career that fits your personal goals takes time and motivation. You must decide not only what you can do, but what it is you want to do, and what is important to you. Bear in mind, too. that all decisions are not final. Today’s choice may no longer be appropriate in the future. Be flexible; periodically re • assess your goals in the light of a changing world. Use the tools which have been provided you during your years in school to shape the future that you want for yourself. Congratulations and best wishes. Sincerely yours, Gerald M. However, just as important, yet often overlooked, is the knowledge we received from one another. Being together in a close situation, forces us to learn to deal with ourselves as well as each other. You learn that you have to be yourself. You cannot let peers twist you into being what they need and you must not change yourself to be accepted by the group. If this happens you lose your identity and with that you lose yourself. Yet at the same time, you must learn from other people not to change yourself. Listen to what they say and improve upon what you are. There is a fine line to walk between the two. I wish you both the ability in determining for yourself where that line is, and the skill to walk it without falling off. As a result of its size the team was forced to train in separate gymnasiums. Although divided in body, in mind they remained as one. This was a difficult year for them as they were being exposed to many new experiences. These experiences ranged from preliminary competition held twice a year to being spectators at the festival of the turkey games. Team captains for this year were Scott Bavasso, June Diehl, Kim Dionne, Mary Beth Ruisi, Renee Castagna, Elaine Cryan, Anne Stryjewski, and Betty • Jo Cugini. The year progressed, the team worked hard, accomplishments and successes — some! At the end of the year the team had a party with much music and dancing which became a yearly tradition. When the second year of training began the team was reunited. The sense of security that was perhaps this sense of security that enabled the team to move up the first level of winning, the bronze medal. The team captains for this year were Jim Iacoi, Tammy Souza, Mary Beth Ruisi, Nancy Leonetti, Kim Cullinane, Andy Lee, Danny Krause, and Elaine Cryan. Like the preceeding year this year was ended in song and dance. ( With renewed spirit the team began their third year of training. This year proved to be more difficult, the training hours were longer and the competition was tougher. The coaches, upset with the field conditions, waited to resume their normal routine. Based on the team’s immense improvement in ability, they were entered into a higher level of competition. Their determination allowed them to reach an even greater goal. The team had silver medals. The captains responsible for this winning year were Mary Schwer, David Chan, Mary Beth Ruis( Janice Lombardi, Nancy Leonetti, Danny Krause, Elaine Cryan, Andy Lee, and Anne Stryjewski. Once again the year ended in a celebration of a much more formal nature. At the start of the fourth and find year of competitionihe team had time to reflect upon its past. It had grown from an insecure, separated, strugglmo -otiT of-ij vi ualists to a solid winning team. The team leadersffchi« ear were Melinda Douglasr-Jlm pizzaffo, TJancy Leonetti, Mary Mindeck, Kelly Stryjewski, Elaine Cryan, Dannjff (I UUil and Andy Lee. The team saw one goal before them, to become number one. Incredible enthusiasm helped them overwhelm their competition. The team had finally become gold medalists. Their victory was celebrated at the Marble House where there was dining and dancing held in the glow of success. The team did much reminscing. The achievment of climbing Mt. Olympus was accompanied by the awarding of sheepskins. We have successfully accomplished our goal in the competition. 54 55 56 57 Most Knowledgable about Social Affairs Jacque Kevin Most Likely to Succeed Janice Andy - Friendliest Karen Chuck Most School Spirit Nancy Dan Nicest Smile Cathy Tom 58 Most Optimistic Sandy Tom Mary Beth Chris Most Talkative Valentina Chris Class Singers Karen, Brenda, and Steve Quietest Vicki Ed 59 Class Individualists Melinda Scott Most Creative Maureen Tom Most Athletic Renee Norm 60 Most Gullible Diane Grant Cutest Dimples Cathy Bruce Best Liked Kim Bob Class Blushers Kelly Sam Most Respected Anne Gary Best Dressed Laurie Kean Moat Energetic Patty Ted Claaa Mualciana Marian Jim 62 Class Artists Kim Jim 63 Senior Directory Patricia Anne Abate Patty Boy Scout Drive, Westerly There are a lot of ways to go. and a lot of things we never •Aid. ready and waiting, anticipating, looking ahead.
