West’lyan Westerly High School Westerly, Rhode Island Dedication Administration and MY CAMEOS OF MEMORY These are my treasures kept apart, Cradled in velvet in my heart. Graven profiles, picture-clear. Perfect moments, priceless-dear. Etched in ageless time to be My cameos of memory. The hours I have spent with you. The tender times, the fun times, too. The summer roses and the rain. The laughter and the precious pain Of loving you — your loving me — My cameos of memory. These are my wealth, my warmth, my light, I keep them dream-close all the night. With finger-tips of heart and mind I trace each profile there defined — These treasures none can take from me — My cameos of memory. Underclassmen Helen Lowrie Marshall Ta ble of Con ten ts Faculty Seniors When you arc old and grey and full of sleep. And nodding by the fire, take down this book. And slowly read, and dream . . . William Butler Yeats I came in hope of finding a way to expand my own reflection to make it more than what it is. If I must go away with less fortify me with your smile. Rod McKuen 8 9 Dedication Mrs. Geraldine Bell As our years at Westerly High School come to an end, we look back with many fond memories. You will always be a part of our fond memories, Mrs. Bell. In our junior year, many of us enjoyed your warm smile and gentle laugh as we shared ideas on American Literature. And this year you have generously given your time and patience as advisor of the Yearbook. We greatly appreciate all that you have done for us — your understanding, helpfulness and devotion. Therefore, it is with great pleasure and a big THANK-YOU that we, the Class Of 1974, do hereby dedicate our 10 edition of the West’lyan to you, Mrs. Geraldine Bell. In Memoriam Linda A. Robinson (1959-1973) WITH YOU A PART OF ME HATH PASSED AWAY With you a part of me hath passed away; For in the peopled forest of my mind A tree made leafless by this wintry wind Shall never don again its green array. Chapel and fireside, country road and bay, Have something of their friendliness resigned; Another, if I would, I could not find, And I am grown much older in a day. But yet I treasure in my memory Your gift of charity, your mellow ease, And the dear honour of your amity; For these once mine, my life is rich with these. 11 George Santayana The time has come for closing books And long last looks must end. And as I leave, I know that I am leaving my best friend, A friend who taught me right from wrong And weak from strong. That’s a lot to learn. from the song To Sir, With Love” $ 13 WARREN PELTON EDWARD T. MORENZONI Assistant Superintendent Superintendent To the Class of 1974: Your actual graduation will be a very formal occasion with itf caps and gowns, processions, diplomas and charge to you graduates by the speaker. But beneath this formal surface there is a warm personal side, for your graduation is truly a celebration of an accomplishment and a cause for joyful congratulations. For most of you this will be your first big achievement. You have assimilated a tremendous body of knowledge as well as having built abilities and skills as you have gone through the academic routine. Wise use of this body of knowledge and these skills will mean success in your future endeavors. Best wishes for a successful and rewarding life. Sincerely yours, 14 Edward T. Morcnzoni GERALD M. DUNN Principal SALVATORE AUGERI Assistant Principal To the Class of 1974: We all too often expect goods and services, praise and reassurance, without ever being ready to give them ourselves. A self-centered life goes nowhere. As always, if we want action, we must provide it. As a class, your every action was closely associated with service and leadership to your school. The administration and staff appreciate each of your fine contributions to our school and wish you much success. Sincerely yours, Gerald M. INC. 64 High Street Seniors 32 Class History It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness,... it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to heaven, we were all going direct the other way.” For most of us entering Westerly High School in our Sophomore year, A Tale of Two Qties, by Charles Dickens, was one of the first obstacles to be encountered. We began our Sophomore year at W.H.S. on September 8, 1971. Our first task was to select class officers. Those elected were: Danny Williams, President; Rick Riley, Vice-President; Janet DePcrry, Secretary; John Cuda, Treasurer; and Paula Terranova, Social Chairman. Students elected to represent our class on the Student Council were: Rose Anna Morrow, Dennis Bottone, Joe Mixic, and Dave Home. The first dance we attended as Sophomores was the Sadie Hawkins Dance, presented by the Junior Class. The main attraction of the night was the pie-eating contest, won by a Senior — Vinny Capizzano. The first assembly of our Sophomore year was a concert by a group called Pilgrim 20.” This was a professional rock group traveling around the New England area. They were such a success that they returned the following night and gave a second performance. Mr. Augeri resumed his former football coaching position in 1971 and led the team to a 5-5 record. The Thanksgiving Day game was cancelled because of rain, but was played the following Saturday. It was a close game, but, fortunately, a victory for Westerly with a score of 15-13. Our Christmas vacation started December 23. On December 29 our class gave its first dance. January 24-26 found us struggling through our first set of exams — midyears. What a relief when they were over. The month of February brought with it a Valentine’s Day Dance, presented by the Seniors. It also brought with it our long-awaited February vacation. Also that winter several of the girls in our class tried out for the cheerleading squad. They all worked very hard and those who were to become cheerleaders were notified after spring vacation. Pam Main was chosen co-captain. The others added to the squad were: Debbie Strafach, Linda Majcika and Kerry Sieczkicwicz. The theme of the Sophomore Hop, given on May 27, was As Time Goes On.” Janet DePerry was chosen queen; Debbie Serra, Kathy Kirby, Doreen Gulluscio, Debbie Strafach, Linda Majeika and Debbie Ozga were members of the court. Final exams were given June 13,14 and 15. Our Sophomore year at W.H.S. came to an end on June 16,1972. At the beginning of our Junior year, we were once again involved in electing class officers. Larry Adams was elected President; Nick Vuono, Vice-President; Janet DePerry, Secretary; John Cuda, Treasurer; and Paula Terranove, Social Chairman. Elected to the Student Council were: P. J. Marshall, Rose Morrow, Dave Home, and Dennis Bottone. P. J. had the distinction of being the first Junior to be elected President of the Council. During the first part of the year, we attended two interesting assemblies. One was put on by the Navy Steel Band; the other was a science assembly sponsored by General Motors, entitled Preview of Progress.” It was now our turn to give the Sadie Hawkins Dance, and we did so on November 11. The Thanksgiving Day Game was on November 23. Westerly was again victorious. The soccer team also did very well that year with a 16-1 season and winning the title of Southern Division Champions.” On December the team was honored at a banquet at the Elks Club. Later in the sports year the basketball team had a 17-6 season, track a 6-4 season, and baseball a 7-11 season. Christmas vacation started December 22. On the 23rd a dance was held. Spur” provided the music. Midyears were once again upon us; they were given January 23-26. The evening of January 26 the Ski Club left for a fun-filled weekend in Stowe, Vermont. Winter blahs set in. In the spring, however, some of our classmates displayed their musical and acting talents in Senor Pimpernel.” Involved in the production were: John McMannis, Ann Gcncarelli, Bonnie Terranova, Cindy Wetmore, Debbie Serra, Mike Guekel, Rita Manfredi, Joanne Basile, and Roberta McKenna. This was the first musical at W.H.S. in many years, taking place on April 13 and 14. Also that month. Marguerite Gcncarelli was added to the chcerleading squad. On May 19, our Junior Prom was held. That was an important night for many of our classmates who had worked long hours to make the gym look like Springtime in Paris.” Kerry Siezkwiecz was Queen; her attendants were: Rita Manfredi, Kim Morenzoni, Cindy Weston, Debbie Serra, Kathy Kirby and Sue Fobcrg. Final exams ran from June 21-23, and by June 26 we were two-thirds of the way through our high school years. On September 5, our Senior Year began. Class officers were: John Cuda, President; Nick Vuono, Vice-President; Gina Servideo, Treasurer; Paula Terranova, Social Chairman; and Susan Foberg, Secretary. Activities started early this year. The yearbook staff hit the football field to work at the concession stand. On October 12 class pictures had begun to be taken. Many of the Senior girls worked hard getting the Senior skit ready for the Thanksgiving game rally. Remember that famous chorus known as the Turkettes?” The football team deserved nothing but the best after an undefeated season. The team then went on to defeat Stonington on Thanksgiving Day. Beating Middletown earned them the well-deserved title of Class B Champions!!” Also on the sports scene this year, the soccer team had a 4-6-3 season and the basketball team is now in the semi-finals. Another highlight of our Senior year was the Spaghetti Supper and Concert, both given by our class on December 8. On January 23-25 we took our last set of exams at W.H.S. The end is almost in sight. The date has been set for our Senior Prom which will take place on March 30 at the Haversham Room of the Swiss Chalet. In the coming months, we can look forward to such Senior Week activities as our class picnic, class banquet, and finally our GRADUATION!!!
