CLASS HISTORY Three years ago the senior class entered Westerly High School as meek little sophomores. Since then we have added maturity and determination to our numerous qualities, rarely letting our rowdiness get out of hand. As sophomores we elected capable members of the class as officers. They were Robert Mitchell, President; Laura DiGangi, Vice President; Alice Gervasini, Treasurer; Debbie Dionne, Secretary; and Lynn Sposato, Social Chairman. Even though we were meek, we wanted our votes heard, and we elected Louis Graeve, LuAnn Gervasini, Lauri Nardone, and Lois Joyce as our members to the Student Council. We also took an active part in sports. Tony Ribeiro, Robert Mitchell, Peter DiMaggio, Bob Tillinghast, Nick Verzillo, Frank Urso, Chris Latherow, Ron Gwaltney, Kevin Colosi, Fred Highland, and Joe Grills proved valuable members of the football team under the coaching of James Gulluscio. Peter Martin, Joe Francese, Paul Williamson, Mike Warner, Mark St. Onge, Fred Bogue, Buddy Garraty, Jerry Wolstencroft, Chip O'Lari, Jens Ljungberg, Ed Magowan, Ron Zanella and Dave Arnott displayed the potential of future soccer champions. The dribbling sophomore members of the basketball team included Ken Butler, Jerry Wolstencroft, Paul Martin, Peter Martin, James Pucci, and Mark St. Onge. They produced a fine record under the coaching of Donald Autry and the managing of Arthur Lavoie and Richard Guidice. Only two sophomores made the ski team. They were Paul Williamson and Mike Warner. Our fine baseball team included sophomores Dave Blanchet, Jerry Wolstencroft, Glen Gaccione, Dave Grispino, Chip O'Lari, Steve Gencarella, John Manette, Mike Risica, Bob Tillinghast, Tom Barbone, and Dave Gallo. Under the coaching skills of Tom Tucker Terranova, our baseball team finished as Co-Champions of the Southern Division with a Won-Lost record of 8-4. Competing on the track and field were Ron Gwaltney, Frank Urso, Dave Smith, Henry Sardelli, Bob Burns, Dave Robertson, Mike Warner, Pete DiMaggio, Nick Verzillo, Guy Niles, Ron Miceli, Ron Zanella, and Charles Will. The coaching was done by Jack Carson. Our only representative on the golf team was Thomas Siller. Coach for the golf team was Charles St. Onge. Making a splash under the coaching of Robert Koch for the swim team were Mick Quattromani, Dave Serra, Chris Latherow, and Arthur Lavoie. Chosen in the spring were the cheerleaders for our junior year. Lauren Olsen was chosen co-captain. Rounding out the group were Gina Giovacchini, Sharon Delaney, and LuAnn Gervasini. In the spring, we began preparations for our Sophomore Hop. The committee decided on the theme Color My World . Music was provided by the band Bastille . Laura DiGangi was crowned queen. Chosen for the court were Pamela Smith, Angela Vetelino, Diane Coburn, Lynn Tattersall, Jody Gavitt, and Melinda Comolli. At the annual Awards Assembly, first, second, and third prizes in the Martha C. Babcock Essay Contest were won by sophomores. First prize was awarded to Susan Vardilos, second prize was awarded to Mary Cofoni, and third prize was awarded to Eileen Foote. The chemistry team included sophomores Fred Highland and John Ouderkirk. Fred Highland placed second in the State Championships. After the summer vacation, we returned with the newly-acquired status of juniors. We immediately elected our class officers. They were Charles Tourtellotte, President; Neil Robinson, Vice President; Peter Martin, Treasurer; Angela Vetelino, Secretary; and Terri-anne Lawson, Social Chairman. Chosen to represent our class on the Student Council were Laurie Nardone, Lois Joyce, Judith Chick and Joseph Grills. Because of their valiant efforts, we were the first class to get seventh period release time. We remained very active in sports during our junior year. Jeff Butler, Chris Latherow, Peter DiMaggio, Ken Butler, Frank Urso, Tony Ribeiro, Ed Gray, Bob Mitchell, Guy Niles, Steven Larkin and Ron Gwaltney were all on the football team under the direction of coach Sal Augeri. Kicking off the soccer season were Peter Martin, Jens Ljungberg, David Arnott, Jerry Wolstencroft, Glen Gaccione, Chip O’Lari, Mike Warner, and Paul Williamson.
