CHILDREN LEARN WHAT THEY LIVE If a child lives with criticism, he learns to condemn. If a child lives with hostility, he learns to fight. If a child lives with ridicule, he learns to be shy. If a child lives with shame, he learns to feel guilty. If a child lives with tolerance, he learns to be patient. If a child lives with encouragement, he learns confidence. If a child lives w'ith praise, he learns to appreciate. If a child lives with fairness, he learns justice. If a child lives with security, he learns to have faith. If a child lives with approval, he learns to like himself. If a child lives with acceptance and friendship, he learns to find love in the world. ® Author unknown This yearbook is dedicated to all those who have helped the Class of 1973 throughout our high school years. June, 1973 GERALD M. DUNN To the CLASS of 1973: I strongly urge that you look upon your graduation from Westerly High School not as the end of a long road but as the beginning of a new journey. Envision your graduation as a first step on the ladder of success. Remember that the rung of a ladder was never meant to rest upon, but only to hold one's foot long enough to enable you to put the other somewhat higher. Set for yourself a high goal and trust that life, chance, help from others and your own growing experience and ability will in time enable you to advance step by step to your goal. Best wishes for much success and happiness in your future endeavors. Sincerely yours, 6 CLASS of 1973: I am quite confident that most of you have the qualities of reliability and responsibility to match your dreams and goals for life. You have had the opportunity over the past years to obtain the basic knowledge that is necessary for a successful adult life. The degree to which you use this knowledge will really determine just how much actual success you will obtain in the years ahead. I congratulate you on your fine accomplishments over the past years and wish you much success in the future. Sincerely yours, Gerald M. Dunn Principal EDWARD T. MORENZONI Edward T. Bubble, bubble, toil and trouble. CLASS HISTORY Three years ago the senior class entered Westerly High School as meek little sophomores. Since then we have added maturity and determination to our numerous qualities, rarely letting our rowdiness get out of hand. As sophomores we elected capable members of the class as officers. They were Robert Mitchell, President; Laura DiGangi, Vice President; Alice Gervasini, Treasurer; Debbie Dionne, Secretary; and Lynn Sposato, Social Chairman. Even though we were meek, we wanted our votes heard, and we elected Louis Graeve, LuAnn Gervasini, Lauri Nardone, and Lois Joyce as our members to the Student Council. We also took an active part in sports. Tony Ribeiro, Robert Mitchell, Peter DiMaggio, Bob Tillinghast, Nick Verzillo, Frank Urso, Chris Latherow, Ron Gwaltney, Kevin Colosi, Fred Highland, and Joe Grills proved valuable members of the football team under the coaching of James Gulluscio. Peter Martin, Joe Francese, Paul Williamson, Mike Warner, Mark St. Onge, Fred Bogue, Buddy Garraty, Jerry Wolstencroft, Chip O'Lari, Jens Ljungberg, Ed Magowan, Ron Zanella and Dave Arnott displayed the potential of future soccer champions. The dribbling sophomore members of the basketball team included Ken Butler, Jerry Wolstencroft, Paul Martin, Peter Martin, James Pucci, and Mark St. Onge. They produced a fine record under the coaching of Donald Autry and the managing of Arthur Lavoie and Richard Guidice. Only two sophomores made the ski team. They were Paul Williamson and Mike Warner. Our fine baseball team included sophomores Dave Blanchet, Jerry Wolstencroft, Glen Gaccione, Dave Grispino, Chip O'Lari, Steve Gencarella, John Manette, Mike Risica, Bob Tillinghast, Tom Barbone, and Dave Gallo. Under the coaching skills of Tom Tucker Terranova, our baseball team finished as Co-Champions of the Southern Division with a Won-Lost record of 8-4. Competing on the track and field were Ron Gwaltney, Frank Urso, Dave Smith, Henry Sardelli, Bob Burns, Dave Robertson, Mike Warner, Pete DiMaggio, Nick Verzillo, Guy Niles, Ron Miceli, Ron Zanella, and Charles Will. Time is flying by and we have so few days left at Westerly High School. Yet there is still so much to do. We are eagerly looking forward to our Senior Prom which will be held in April. And at last, we are looking forward to Senior Week which terminates with our long-awaited graduation. This will be the beginning of a new life for us, but we will always remember our pleasant years at W.H.S. To the CLASS of 1973 Instead of saying we should all be ready to enter the big, harsh, cruel world, I'm going to tell you how you can keep your youth with you in the many years to come. Yes, I have discovered the Fountain of Youth for the brain. What you should do twice a year from now on is, go get yourself a nice, tall glass of beer and something to eat along with it and then go dig this book out of the bottom of your closet. Brush away the dust and just sit back in the biggest, fluffiest chair in the house and go through this yearbook, page by page, and remember the good old days.” Remember, nobody can keep you young except you yourself. Angela Vetelino, leave all my cheers for Chariho to anyone who can go through a school year at Westerly and go out with someone from Chariho. We, Laurie, Charlutes, Diane, Reverend Hank, Jane, Earl, Smitty, Ralph, Rosebud, Neil, Lynn, Frank and Eddy leave our hair to all underclassmen who have no hair. We, Gayle Marcey and Eileen Foote, do hereby leave our nightly rides around town and our ability to create excuses to get out to have them, to any underclassmen who find the pressures of home and school causing the need for the fun those rides can, and did, bring. I. Laura Gaccione, being of sound mind and body, do hereby leave to Nancy Tisch and Rita Manfredi another year of aching bodies, pulled muscles, skin splints and techniques of ' brown-nosing'’ the coaches. We, Laura DiGangi, Alice Gervasini and Pat Majeika, the mouths” of the senior class, leave our ability to yell and scream louder than the cheerleaders at sports events to any sophomores or juniors who have mouths big enough to fill in for us. Beware the Jabberwock, my son! The jaws that bite, the claws that catch! Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun The frumious Bandersnatch! He took his vorpal sword in hand; Long time the manxome foe he sought— So rested he by the Tumtum tree. And stood awhile in thought. And, as in unffish thought he stood, The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame. Came whiffling through the tulgey wood, And burbled as it came! One, two! One, two! and through and through The vorpal blade went snicker-snack! He left it dead, and with its head He went galumphing back. And hast thou slain the Jabberwock? Come to my arms, my beamish boy! O frabious day! Callooh, Callay!” He chortled in his joy.
