Text from Pages 1 - 136 of the 1972 volume:

DEDICATION Mr. Thomas Ryan We will always remember you, Thomas Ryan, because above all you were a friend as well as a teacher. You treated us as equals — clarifying our own ideas rather than simply dictating your own. Your patience and willingness to listen have won you a permanent place in our memories. To the Class of 1972, you are epitomized by the statement, his chief object has been not to be feared but loved. Therefore, we, the Class of 1972, dedicate this yearbook to you, Mr. Ryan. s.j. g.b. 4 APPRECIATION Mrs. Joyce Fletcher Reflecting back upon our high school days, the image of you, Mrs. Fletcher, comes quickly to mind. The knowledge you imparted to us will never be forgotten — most especially, the knowledge of ourselves which we were able to gain through your guidance. Both in and out of the classroom you taught us to think for ourselves, to be open-minded, and to be aware of what was going on around us. With your understanding and optimistic laughter, you made the road from childhood to young adulthood much less painful for us all. You have won the highest honor for a teacher, the complete trust and respect of her students. Therefore, Mrs. Fletcher, the Class of 1972 gratefully thanks you, a wonderful teacher and friend, for all that you have done for us. We hope to be remembered with as much affection as we shall remember you. gc. APPRECIATION Mr. Thomas Terranova We, the Class of 1972, take this time to thank you, Mr. Terranova, for the miracles you have accomplished for our benefit. As a single man, you have displayed the energy and enthusiasm of three people, resulting in the best athletic program that our schools have ever had. You first won our respect as a fine teacher at the Junior High School. Now, as a coach and athletic director, our esteem for you has continued to grow. We will never forget it was you who succeeded in acquiring better facilities, and instituting many new and varied athletic programs for us. A wonderful individual, you have spread your enthusiasm throughout the entire student body and faculty. We, along with our fellow students and the whole community, sincerely appreciate the tremendous amount of time and effort you have given for us. Mr. Terranova, you will always be fondly remembered by the Class of 1972. Gerald M. Dunn CLASS OF 1972: I offer my sincere congratulations to you, the graduating Class of 1972. This particular period of time in your lives need not be and should not be the termination of your education. Never before in our nation’s history has there been such tremendous opportunity for self-advancement. Your parents and school have provided you with the basic necessities which will enable you to become a productive citizen of your community and nation. It is now encumbent on you to broaden and enrich that background to achieve successes far beyond those my generation ever dreamed possible. Sincerely, Gerald M. Dunn, Principal To The Class of 1972: Graduation is also called commencement.” With it commences a new and freer chapter of your life, however, the full responsibility for your life will now fall on yon. The next chapter of your life will determine your vocation, marriage, social position, the place where you will live, raise a family, and make friends. It will be the longest and most important portion of your life, to be measured not in years, but in decades. Our educational objective was not to give you facts to remember, but the tools with which you yourself might gain the knowledge to find the pattern of life which will be the best for you. Let us hope that we have succeeded and that your adult life will be stimulating and rewarding. Sincerely yours, Edward T. Morenzoni Superintendent of Schools 6 Edward T. I heard that.' mixes RUSH ESNI sEDuriBisRiimiRnif CLASS HISTORY In 1969 we emerged from Babcock Junior High into the bright, new world of Westerly High. Anil here our story begins. After a few weeks of adjusting to our itty bitty sophomore status, we decided that the (inly way to be heard around here would be to elect our class officers and Student Council members. President Frank Ravenelle ruled the class with a helping hand from Donald Murano as Vice President, Secretary Michelle Ravenelle, the everlasting treasurer. Tom Turco and Social Chairman I.inda Friend. Our class advisors were Mrs. Fletcher and Mr. Autry. Representing our class on the esteemed Student Council were Kathryn Quintal, Elizabeth Magowan. William Nardone, and David Gencarelli. Our valiant sophomore football players were Anthony Leonetti. Donald Murano, Frank Ravenelle, William Holliday, Stephen Knight, Vincent Capizzano, Michael Pellegrino. Michael Casey, and Stephen Piccolo. And on the other foot, George Panciera, Louis Sposato. David Gordon, Del Chin. Michael Toscano, and Marc Nicol gave their best to the soccer team. Gregory Donahue. Jack Capizzano, William Nardone, David Gencarelli, and Joseph Serra proved to he more than just a drop in the bucket to our basketball team. After weeks of practice, tryouts for the yelling squad were held. Kathleen Rose, Isobel Vargas, Judith Morgan, and Co-Captain Linda Friend were chosen. The curtain closed on the final performance of prize-speaking with Rita Gaccione, Scott Everett and David Gencarelli as our winners. Our sophomore year was the debut of new baseball coach Ierranova. Michael Toscano, Frank Ravanelle, and Gregory Donahue won starting positions as the Westerly Nine upset several opponents, including Chariho and Stonington. Also aiding the cause were Charles Falcone. Donald Murano, and Lawrence Manette. Joseph Nigrclli, Vincent Capizzano. Joseph Serra, Michael Casey, and Ward McKenna helped set the pace for the track team. Michael Casey was part of the the -MO yard relay which set a school record. 'Lime of the Season was the theme for our Sophomore Hop and the gym was appropriately decorated with a gazebo and flowers and streamers in spring colors. Doreen Sieczkiewicz was crowned our queen with Debra Marino, Valerie Winchester. Claire Trebisacci, Linda Barrus, Kathryn Quintal, and Denise Pillmear as her court. In September we returned to W.H.S.. now as tiny, tiny” juniors. Voted into class office were Chief Donald Murano; Bruce Celico, his able assistant; Scribbler Geraldine Liguori; Thomas Turco, the cents’-ible treasurer, and Debra Marino, Social Chairman. The officers will never forget their weekly meetings when advisors Mrs. Godomski and Mr. Fallon came up with thousands of ideas to help the class. The first project for the officers was the annual Sadie Hawkins Dance, which was a huge success and aided in building a solid class treasury. Edward Pasqualin, William Nardone, and Frank Ravenelle, along with Student Council Secretary Kathryn Quintal, put their heads together to revise our Constitution, which resulted in spring elections and open Council meetings. The Council also carried on an exchange program with West Warwick High School. Taking the football field for the second year were Gary Ger-vasini, David Gordon, Frank Abate. Frank Sistare. Stephen Piccolo, James Ward. Frank Ravenelle, William Holliday, Michael Pellegrino, Vincent Capizzano. Christopher Coulahan, William Higgins. Henry DiGregorio, Anthony Leonetti, and David Gencarelli. The soccer team, with the second best defense in the state, was helped by Del Chin. Francis Finocchiaro, Michael Toscano, Marc Nicol, George Panciera. Thomas Turco, and Louis Sposato. The basketball team, with the help of William Nardone, Gregory Donahue, Joseph Gaccione, Jack Capizzano, finished third in the Class B Western Division, making the play-offs. The yelling squad was made complete with the addition of Sandra DiPaola. In 1971 the baseball team became the Division Co-Champions and by defeating South Kingstown in extra innings won a place in the play-offs. Members of the team included Lawrence Manette. Michael Toscano, Donald Murano. David Ferraro, Gregory Donahue, and Frank Ravenelle. Jack Capizzano set a school record of 180 on the low hurdles. Also making a fine showing in other events were Robert Rodman, Michael Casey. David Gencarelli, Vincent Capizzano, Joseph Serra. Michael Spezzano, Joseph Gaccione, Joseph Nigrclli, and Barry Sullivan. Teeing off for the class of ’72 on the golf course was Donald Foberg. For the first time an informal swim team was organized at W.H.S. with David Carpenter, Christopher Raithel. Thomas Turco, Steven Johnson, and Conrad Dreczko participating. In early March preparations for our Junior Prom began. Finally on April 4. under midnight blue skies with twinkling stars, Brenda Taylor was crowned queen, as our theme song. Stairway to the Stars. played softly in the background. Serving as members of the queen’s court were Donna Anthony, Carol Cooper, Debra Marino. Michelle Ravenelle, JoAnne Cherenzia and Linda Friend. Along came September and we eagerly entered the halls of W.H.S. for our final and most exciting year. At last we reached the status of high and mighty ’ SENIORS! We chose officers capable of guiding us through the year. Re-elected for another term were President Donald Murano and Treasurer Tom Turco. Other officers include Michael Spezzano as Vice President, Secre-taiy Isobel Vargas, and Social Chairman Michelle Ravenelle. 'Faking the reins of the Student Council and setting outlines for future projects are President Edward Pasqualin. Vice President-Treasurer Gabe Benoit, Frank Ravenelle, and Thomas Turco. Returning as coach once again, Mr. Augeri found talent and skills in a menagerie” of ball players. Leading the team were Gi-rav Ravenelle and Gorilla Capizzano as Co-Captains. Other members of the squad were Sphinx Gencarelli, Dude Gervasini, Chip Celico, Donny Duck Murano, Tony Tiger Leonetti, Joe the Toe Serra, Porky Pic Piccolo, Skunk Holliday, Coulagoon Coulahan, Flash Gordon, Hen -ry DiGregorio, Snake in the Grass Ward, and Stork Sistare. Our class broke with tradition once again, as this year was the first time the Thanksgiving game was postponed. But it was well worth the wait, for after three years Westerly defeated the Bears in a thrilling 15-13 game. Partial credit goes to the Pep Club (President Gail Somerset) and the Cheerleaders for the fantastic support given our players. The soccer team came up with their first winning season under the direction of Coach Serra. One of the greatest victories was the defeat of long-time rival Chariho. This was made possible by the superb efforts of Co-Captains Michael Toscano and George Panciera. Other members of the team were Francis Finocchiaro. Alfred Brousseau. Marc Nicol, Jack Capizzano, anil Louis Sposato. Michael Toscano was selected to the All-Star Team both as a Junior and Senior and this year made second team All State. Returning for their last year and looking forward to a fine season on the basketball court are Gregory Donahue, Joseph Gaccione. William Nardone, and Jack Capizzano. Soon our high school years will be merely memories. Having already exchanged class pictures we hope that they will help us to remember the friends we have made throughout our school years. We now look forward to our Senior Prom as well as Senior Week and finally at last that long awaited day — graduation. However, the experience and the knowledge that we have gained in these three years will always be a part of our future lives. 16 CLASS OFFICERS As our senior years comes to a close, we are rapidly approaching the end of one, and the beginning of another — much more significant — phase of our lives. During the past twelve years, aided by the guidance and inspiration provided by our parents, teachers, and friends, we have been able to manage our lives successfully. We are sincerely grateful to each of them for their generous assistance. However, as we leave Westerly High School, we should realize that we now must stand on our own two feet in facing the problems ahead. More so than ever before, we are compelled to search deep within ourselves to find the answers to the problems that will confront us later in our existence. We must be confident in deciding what roads in life are most suitable for us. As John Donne once said, No man is an island”; no man stands completely alone; yet, as we grow older, it is imperative that we stand poised and assured while resolving the complexities of the future. I therefore wish the entire Class of 1972 the best of luck in whatever you may endeavor in the coming years. Donald Michael Murano Class President, 1972 Left to Right. One bright sunny day in the year 2028. our wonderful and beloved ninety-five year old school counselor passed away quietly. Our counselor left us all his money which amounted to two-hundred and forty six million dollars. That is, he bequeathed it to the glorious Westerly High School Class of ‘72. Now with their million dollars each, the graduates could start to live the life that everyone dreams of. There was one problem that confronted the entire situation. How could the graduates of the '72 class be located? To solve the situation, Sandy Tenuta, Stephanie Pellegrino, and Debbie Cappuccio were delegated to find their fellow classmates, and give them their share of the money. Since these three girls kept in touch with most of the graduates, they were the best ones suited for the job of finding them. Some of the graduates were not hard to find since they had opened up many profitable businesses in town. For example, Frank Abate and Mike Pellegrino opened Mamma's Shell Gas Station on Mechanic Street. Debbie White and Cindy Woll are doing mid jobs for the boys like scrubbing white noils. Margaret Burns. Mary Ellen Buckley. Donna Anthony, ami Marce Fazio, have established the Eternal Rest Home down by the Sleepy Hollow. Bruce Celico, I.ouis Conto, Willie Simone. Jack Nardonc, Mike Spezzano, anti Jim Azzinaro have opened a surf shop on Beach Street. Chris Raithel, Andrew Burbelo. and David Moncypcnny built a factory for producing imitation deer antlers for frustrated hunters. Jeanne Pellegrino and Kathy Lynch worked in the building where a remover was made to remove the nail polish remover made by the company whose president was Oscar Martell. and whose business manager was Diane Bonvenuto. The three searchers devoted to finding the class members of 72 soon realized that they needed a central location from which to work. They selected the North Pole as their location. Near their headquarters, the searchers came upon a scientific expedition. Upon investigation, they were amazed to find Dave Ferraro, head scientist of the polar expedition. Dave Miller was the assistant scientist and Mary Ellen Lefler served as their female technician. When asked what they were looking for they gave a rather lengthy reply. It seems that they were looking for Bruce Ladd who was looking for Steve Knight and Kevin Walsh, who had been lost while searching for the South Pole. As a beginning, the searchers put an ad in the large newspapers of the world. At the Daily Mess, Rich Augusto was editor-in-chief, with Martha Kustesky in charge of advertising, and Mamie Chen, editor at the city desk. Working as the outspoken but respected columnist was Sherry O'Brien. The Missing Persons Bureau in Washington. D.C. was an obvious place to ask for assistance. There, George Panciera and his secretary, Lynn Kimmel, were of invaluable service. F.B.I. Chief Steve Lombardi, ottered useful advice along with his chief detective Dave Girpenter. The searchers found that many graduates were involved in U.S. Industry. For example, the Crumple Krinkle Cereal Factory is owned by Dave Broccolo. When one of the searchers arrived for a tour of the factory. Judy Morgan and Linda Barrus were taking notes from the head accountant Mike Sullivan. The foreman. Bob Oates was speaking to Bethany Bolejack, Dave Bauerle. anil Ann Serio about the rising prices of grain. In the twenty five years since graduation, space exploration has boomed just as everyone expected it to. Logically, a stop was made to Cape Kennedy. Upon arrival at the cape the searchers were greeted by Debbie Barber and Laura Williams for their tour. While walking to the pad area, Laura pointed up and said, There goes Nick Bottone and Eugene Pa rise. They're making a routine check of the next shuttle to Mars.” Upon entering the control tower at pad six. the searchers found Bob Awkerman. He pointed to a missle on the launching pad and said, MaryAnn Walsh and Celena I.oPriore are in there. They have to make a run up to the moon. Pam Barrone has fallen into a crater and they have to get her out. Are there any other classmates up there? asked one of the searchers. John Maxson took a technicians job on Mars. Debby Marino, Sharon Brosseau. and Sandy DiPaola are interplanetary stewardesses. Those arc the only classmates out of this world at this time. On pad eight, a launching was taking place. The voice of Dave Riley came over the relay system ... 10. 9. 8. . . . The beautiful pencil-1 ike rocket shot forth into space. Chief scientist Mike Casey, was checking the rocket from inside the take-off shelter. Electronics engineer, Scott Everett and space scientist Del Chin were checking their gauges. A helicopter, flown by Frank Cidale and co-piloted by Terry Dwyer, was to pick up the astronauts when they splashed down while divers Tom Turco and Frank Ravenelle were securing the capsule. In a world based upon speed, supercar racing has become a major sport. The federal government built a cross-country expressway from Maine to California for use as a race track. At the track, preparing for the international championship were Jim Kirby and Ralph DiPietro, renowned racing drivers. They all drove W.A.T.Z.'s manufactured by Gabe Beniot. Looking over the cars were the auto experts Angelo Terranova and the automotive inspector Debbie Montalto. The announcer. Jim Martell called the cars to the starting. The head track official, Dede McColl, dropped her checkered flag and with the pounding of hooves and a cloud of dust they were off. At the finish line in California. Karl Mueller was waiting impatiently because he had an appointment with his dentist. Dr. Billy Tooth Finocchiaro. Racing was not the only sport that appealed to the members of our class. Golf also had its followers. Puttering around the nation’s most difficult golf courses were Chuck Falcone. Dave Wagner, and Ted Cline. In another part of the country Jim Chiaradio and Bob Cat Fiore competed for the Billiards championship of the world. An anonymous caller suggested the searchers go to Hollywood to look for more of their classmates. Upon arrival they were greeted by Anita Ga itt for a short tour of the studios. She left them at the Scandal Movie Co. headed by Jeanne Morrone and Laura Williams, a distant relation to Andy. On one set in the middle of a slapstick comedy. Mike Toscano and Larry Manette were about to have it out over Jeannie Panciera. At the fatal moment Superman, alias Vin Capi zano. swooped in and snatched her from their clutches. On the next set an opera was being rehearsed. The lighting director. Lou Pappadia. and Brenda Pelt, the make-up girl, were busily at work. 58 The searchers had a conference and decided that Whatza Matter University, (once Westerly High) would be the next stop. At the administration building they met the Dean, Anthony Leonetti. He introduced them to the Professor of English, Pam Ruzzo; Professor of Mathematics, Steve Johnson; Professor of History, Geri Liguori, and Dean of Women, Joe LaPietra. And teaching the new Italian Method was Gayle Cherenzia. In the middle of their visit to Whatza Matter U. Sandy Tenuta realized that they had left their irreplacible class lists hack in Hollywood. A return trip was necessary. While visiting Universal Studios they came upon the set of the King and I. Surprisingly enough, taking the starring roles were Robin Webb and Stephen Beattie. The Personnel director was Joan Cast'agnaro. When they came upon the set of Hamlet, they found Hamlet himself, actually. Dave Gencarelli. and Ophelia, Rita Gaccione quarreling over the fate of Rozencrantz ami Guildenstern, David Gordon and Gary Gervasini. As the searchers were about to leave Hollywood, Judy Bryant, the secretary of Acme Airlines run by Pat McAndrew anil Billy Sisson, told us that our round trip tickets were no longer usable. Consequently they had to call Michelle Sposato's Taxi Service. She obligedly sent her two crack drivers Sharon Sullivan and Michael Gencarelli. to drive them back to the East coast. On the long drive back they noticed a spanking new aluminum factory out in the mid-west. Upon investigation they found the head foreman, John Reynolds, was all wrapped up in his work. Upon their arrival home on the East coast, Stephanie Pellegrino found that her beloved hamster had died. Before doing any more work they had to get flowers for the funeral. They were amazed to find that many of their former classmates were working there. Among them were Kathy Rose, Carol Cooper, Rosemary Guarino. and Winnie Holland, whom they found tip toeing through the tulips. The purchase of the flowers was not enough to calm Stephanie. It was necessary to go to the Drug store, that is. William Higgins's Drug Store for some Excedrin. Behind the Lunch counter were Roxanne Champlin. Susan Iacoi, Beth Mac-Quown, and Debra Shulda, eating all the profits. The head pharmacist. Elaine Greer, had just finished distilling her third successful hatch of corn whiskey after having taken prescriptions from Dr. Michael Lupinacci and Dr. Eugene Finocchiaro. After talking with Elaine they found that Dr. Finocchiaro had just finished delivering a beautiful set of quintuplets aided by Bob Quint. The assisting nurse was Betty Ann Magowan. All of a sudden a great realization dawned upon the three searchers. They found that the more they traveled, went sight-seeing and enjoyed themselves, the easier it was to find their classmates. Hard work was not necessarily the answer in this case. So. what did they do? What do you think? They went around enjoying themselves. They decided to hit the beach for some sun. Before going to the beach they went to Kathy Archer’s Sporting Goods Store for some rafts. Employed there were Kurt Bowen, David Rohan, the canoe expert. Valerie Winchester in charge of the guns, Susan Willis and Robbie Rodman selling fishing reels and Ward McKenna in the toy department. After deciding that they wanted a picnic lunch on the beach they went to Rodney's Marcotte and discovered Mike McQuade. David Broccolo. Steven Scroggins. Henry DiGreg'Oreo , Joanne Cherenzia. Lina Spino, Al Brousseau. and MaryEtta Dickey all in the produce room playing cards during their lunch break. Steve Scroggins finally won and they all agreed to help them get the food they need for lunch. While trying to sneak away with no further distractions they were snagged by Barry and Bert, co-owners of Sully and Smith s Hardware, who were celebrating the twenty fifth anniversary of their partnership. David Carpenter and Cheryl Phillips were serving screw drivers. They finally got away and made it to the beach. After picking up some mustard and relish at Joe Serra’s Concession Stand they noticed Lou Sposato. the lifeguard, espying the many bathing beauties sunning themselves. Among them were Janet Faubert, Denise Pi I linear. Patty Cline, Debbie Dauray. Claire Trebisacci. Beatrice Paterno, and Mary Costanza. Down by the water, were Donna Clark, and Debbie Casale building sand castles. In the water the local marriage counselors, Linda Friend and Jimmy Ward, were having a splashing fight. The sun soon got too hot and they started home. On the way home they came upon a rather disastrous accident which resulted when Joe Fiore, Renato Russo, and Chris Coulahan, all riding motorcycles, ran into Cathy Ruisi and Paula Stratouly's live chicken stand causing a widespread epidemic of the tickles. That night they went to Billy Holliday’s restaurant. The waitresses on duty were Valeska King, Maria Turdo, Jane Pucci, and Noreen Murphy. The head chef, Don Murano, was talking to the bartender. Steve Majeika about the upcoming rush hour. The entertainment was the Crusader Hare led by Sammy Brown. Other instrumentalists and vocalists were Stephen Piccolo, Esther Galanti. and Kathy Quintal. Bob Selvidio, alias Buddy Rich. was the drummer. One of the assistant chefs was sent down to Reales Market to buy some badly needed grinder rolls from Paula DiAngi and Gloria DePlacido. That night everyone went to see the stars of the NBA or better known as the Never Bombed Accidentally, consisting of Jack Capiz-zano, Greg Donahue, Joe Gaccione, and general manager Mitch Auerbach. In the audience was Stanley Molon, Eddie Pasqualin, Isobel Vargas. Joyce Pelletier, Gerry Fusaro, Joan Vangieri, Gale Gradilone, Marriannc Hill, Debbie Page. Joyce Reed. Heather Jordan. Jacquelyn Caulfield. Patrick Reegan, Brenda Taylor. Margaret DeBartolo. and Dee Ribeiro. Financing this championship was the Westerly Trust Bank, the president being Gregory Truss: the vice president. Bruce Grant, treasurer. Marc Nicol, the secretary Barbara Pajak. After all, they decided to go to Frank Sistare’s Donut Shop for a coffee. At the coffee pot was Sondra Perkins. In the kitchen was Diane Shortman. At the counter were Debbie McVeigh and Gail Somerset. Was it possible? Were they actually done searching for their classmates? They had spent 245 of the 246 million dollars finding their classmates. So now that the well had run dry, they admitted that it had been a job well done, and that the remaining million dollars should go to the authors of the 1972 Class Prophecy.
