CLASS OF 1969: The administration and faculty at Westerly High School have attempted to inspire, mold, lead, and educate you, the Class of 1969, in the truly American way of life. Such an educational experience should enable you to understand that basic human dignity, liberty, and freedom, in America and in the world came about as a result of valor and blood. Surely, if such ideals within the United States were to fail, they would fail abroad. Thus, it is hoped that as truly educated individuals within our troubled society, you will become more committed and more concerned about the problems facing society today. Your actions should not be to destroy all social rules, practices, and institutions, but should be aimed at improving what we presently have and at building upon these rights for the overall improvement of society in general. I have every confidence that you will participate, strive, and succeed in making social and economic improvements within your community, state, and country. I congratulate you on the achievements you have already attained, and I wish you much success in the years ahead. Sincerely yours, GERALD M. DUNN Principal TO THE CLASS OF 1969: You belong to a generation with a unique place and special mission in a world desperately seeking to find itself. Here then, is a challenge for you: Band together as a generation with a purpose in a world that must find a new sense of direction, or perish. Yours must be a high and lofty purpose so that out of a world of turmoil you may breed tranquility; out of inequity, you may assure a fair chance for every man in the race of life; out of timidity you may inspire character; and out of diversity, you may create harmony. The building of a better society is your responsibility. In this endeavor for each of you there is a hero's role. Although your lines may be spoken softly, your generation has the power to speak with thunder. Each of you has already demonstrated a personal start upon the road of high purpose by seeking to acquire the knowledge and skill so essential in a changing world. I would charge you to leave Westerly High School with both hope and with joy, with confidence in your skills, but also with the humility to understand how much you yet do not know. Education does not end at the school door, but is a lifelong process to be pursued for its own worth, and as a means to renew yourselves and to renew your skills. Sincerely yours, EDWARD T. MORENZONI Superintendent of Schools

IN MEMORIAM Jane Marshall THE INNOCENCE OF DARKNESS A deep black sky dotted with light, A golden moon shone very bright, Drifting through clouds quite lazily Playing with all its secrecy — A little game of hide and seek, Played only by the soft and meek. But once the moon did not appear; A cloud had trapped the gentle sphere, For some time now, no light on earth Too late to realize all the worth. Such light as this from just one source Could be for us, a saddened loss. JLB 5
