Your administration and faculty have stressed the pursuit of sound values as well as the pursuit of knowledge. Now will come your opportunity to put such objectives to excellent use. I think you understand that those who cherish freedom must be strong and that such individuals stand for integrity and sound moral standards. I hope that because of your schooling, you will always have a sincere commitment to defend your faith and your country and that your patriotism will be supported by your intelligent and orderly inquiry into the facts as they relate to freedom here and abroad. I congratulate you on the fine record you have established here at Westerly High School and wish you much happiness in the years to come. Sincerely yours, GERALD M. DUNN Principal CLASS OF 1968 By your work at Westerly High School each of you has already demonstrated a personal start upon the road of high purpose by seeking to acquire the knowledge and skill so essential in a changing world. I would remind you that as you graduate, both with hope and joy, and with confidence in your skills to also have the humility to understand how much you yet do not know. Education does not end at the school door, but is a life-long process to be pursued for its own worth, and as a means to renew yourselves and to renew your skills. My sincere congratulations and best wishes for a rewarding and successful life. Sincerely yours, EDWARD T. MORENZONI Superintendent of Schools 4 FACULTY ANTONIO ESPOSITO Rhode Island College, B.S. Ambition, determination, responsibility, and devotion cannot be measured and no one can give them to us. However, our teachers, parents, and friends have made us aware of these ideals. With these tools it will be our purpose to press for the goal of a great and good life. From the experiences of life and hard work we will, in the years to come,' gain renewed inspiration to work even harder for the attainment of whatever goals may confront us. We are destined to make this world a better place in which to live. Only through co-operation with our fellow man can this be achieved. No man is an island; no man stands alone. Therefore, on the behalf of the Class of 1968, I wish to thank all those who have been instrumental in wielding us into worthy citizens and we await the coming years with much enthusiasm. DAVID ALAN WOOD A friend, a classmate, a quiet individual.” 37 CLASS HISTORY Three years ago, in 1965, we, the Senior Class, began to record our history in the archives of Westerly High School. We are proud of our biography. It has been one of success and achievement and it will be remembered by us and others for years to come. As Sophomores, we elected four very capable and industrious officers to guide us through the Sophomore daze which enveloped many of us throughout our early high school days. They were David Friend, President; Sylvia Manfred, Vice-President; Barbara Jackson, Secretary-Treasurer; and Jean Coduri, Social Chairman. As we were given the right for equal representation on the Student Council we elected Eileen Diehl, Philip Friend, Linda Highling, and Eileen Pellegrino to voice our opinions on school affairs. Our class took an active part in sports that year. In football, Albert Boumenot, Dave Capizzano, Don Coulombe, Sam Gulino, Bob King, Richard Liguori, Joe Limanni, Steve Morgan, Jimmy Murano, Wayne Rainey, Russell Ravenelle, Jerry St. Germain, Tony Serra, Greg Simmons, Charlie Soloveitzik, Dean Springer, and Bill Street were on the field helping the team out. In Basketball we saw Mark O’Donnell in the starting five, with David and Philip Friend, Joe Limanni, Peter McAndrew, Jimmy Murano, Tony Serra, Dixon Simmons, Greg Simmons, Steve Sisson, and John Sistare leading the J.V. team to victory. Baseball season saw Ralph Craig, David Harman, Russell Ravenelle, Tony Serra, Greg Simmons, Charlie Soloveitzik, Bob Ter-ranova, Joe Terranova, and George West out on the diamond. Scholastically, our Chemistry Team that year consisted of four Sophomores and one Junior. Jeff Serra, Bob King, Diane Loomis, and Rhonda Moody represented our class on the team which won first place at the University of Rhode Island’s Chemistry Contest, with Jeff Serra placing third in individual honors. Barbara Jackson, an apt Latin student, achieved a perfect score on Auxilium Latinum, a national Latin achievement test. Replacing the graduating seniors, new cheerleaders were chosen from our class; the new additions to the squad were Jean Coduri, Eileen Diehl, Patty Kendzia, Karen MacLean, and Eileen Pellegrino, captain of 1968. Twirlers were also chosen for our Junior Year. Those selected from our class were Debbie Clarke, Captain; Nadine Champlin and Connie Martin. 38 In the Still of the Night” was the theme of our Sophomore Hop and appropriately so, as the gym ceiling was transformed into an evening sky of midnight blue, with twinkling silver stars and a bright moon glowing in the heavens. The court consisted of Eileen Diehl, Mary DiGangi, Donna Gingerella, Pat Higgins, Betty Pizza, and Kathy Woodward, with Karen MacLean being crowned our lovely queen. The summer passed too quickly and again we were in the halls of W.H.S., but this time as Juniors who had already learned our ways through the labyrinth of rooms. We settled down to work after electing Steve Morgan, President; Paul Taillon, Vice-President; Ann Parise, Secretary-Treasurer; and Karen MacLean, Social Chairman. We had Donna Gingerella, Eileen Pellegrino, Anne Serio, and George West ably representing us on the Student Council. That fall we were thrilled to see Steve Morgan doing an exceptional job on the football team. However, the other Junior members were also making names for themselves on the squad. They were Albert Boumenot, Dave Capizzano, David Friend, Sam Gulino, Bob Keegan, Bob King, Richard Liguori, Jim Murano, Wayne Rainey, Jerry St. Germain, Tony Serra, Greg Simmons, Charlie Soloveitzik, Dean Springer, Paul Taillon, Anthony Vocatura, George West, and Bob Zapatka. On the basketball court we consistently found David Friend and Mark O’Donnell among the starting five, with Dennis Schmidt, Larry Vetelino, and Peter McAndrew also doing a fine job. In baseball Ralph Craig, David Harman, Bob King, Jimmy Murano, Russell Ravenelle, Larry Severns, Greg Simmons, John Sistare, Charlie Soloveitzik, Joe Terranova, Bob Terranova, and George West were showing their best sportsmanship and skill on the diamond and in the field. Dierdre O’Donnell was a member of that year’s Chemistry Team which placed first in the University of Rhode Island’s Chemistry Contest. Our class was also honored by having ten of its members selected for the National Honor Society, an exceptionally large number for a Junior Class at Westerly High School. Those inducted were Beth Copley, Maureen Deering, Linda Finch, David Friend, Barbara Jack-son, Bob King, Diane Loomis, Rhonda Moody, Dierdre O’Donnell, and Jeff Serra. Twirlers were again chosen for 1967-1968. Linda Gray was selected from our class. Our big social event was Ebb Tide,” our Junior Prom. The gym, 39 decorated in blues and greens, the colors of the sea, had nets, anchors, and a mermaid on the walls with another mermaid suspended from the ceiling. Two lighthouses with rotating spotlights were on either side of the queen’s throne. The big moment finally arrived when the queen and her court were announced. One by one, Linda Gray, Linda Highling, Nancy Marshall, Diane Mistrik, Debbie Turano, and Ginny Zippo were led to their places on the court. Mary Bogue was crowned queen that evening by our class president, Steve Morgan. Summer came and went and too soon we unbelievingly found ourselves the supposedly all-knowing seniors. We knew we had a busy year ahead of us and as soon as we had elected competent class officers we could initiate our plans. So David Friend was elected President with Bob King, Vice-President; Barbara Jackson, Secretary-Treasurer; and Dotty Sposato, Social Chairman. Those elected to Student Council were Steve Morgan, President; Beth Copley, Vice-President; Joan Brousseau, Secretary; and Dave Capizzano, Very Important Member. Football was the big attraction that fall. Co-captains David Friend, Steve Morgan, and Wayne Rainey led Norm Asselin, Albert Boumenot, Dave Capizzano, Bob King, Richard Liguori, Joe Limanni, Jim Murano, Jerry St. Germain, Tony Serra, Greg Simmons, Charlie Soloveitzik, Dean Springer, Paul Taillon, Bob Terranova, Anthony Vocatura, and George West to a highly successful season. The Jeff Moore Memorial Trophy again remained in Westerly as a result of their defeating Stonington in the traditional Thanksgiving Day football game. Individual trophies went to the outstanding lineman, Dave Capizzano, and the outstanding back, co-captain Steve Morgan. Basketball season began very successfully with co-captains Mark O’Donnell and David Friend competing for positions among the starting five with Dennis Schmidt, Steve Sisson, Peter McAndrew, Steve Morgan, Larry Vetelino, and Greg Simmons. Replacing Mr. Federico as coach that year was Henry Carey, a former U.R.I. basketball star. As time would not stand still, we had to make the most of our remaining days at W. H. S. Everything seemed to be happening all at once. Senior pictures were taken and exchanged, plans for the Senior Prom being held in February off school grounds were made, college applications were filled out, and a deserving girl, Rhonda Moody, was elected by the Senior girls as the recipient of the D.A.R. award. We are now looking forward to our Senior Week, the banquet, the picnic, and the reception, but most of all to our long-awaited momentous graduation. It will be the beginning of a new life but the end of an old life, one which will always be precious to us and cherished in our hearts.
