WEST’LY AN 1966 A Publication of The Senior Class WESTERLY HIGH SCHOOL WESTERLY, RHODE ISLAND MAJOR JAMES A. McDIVITT MAJOR EDWARD H. WHITE The theme of our Westlyan is based on the endeavors of astronauts Major Edward H. White and Major James A. McDivitt. With Major McDivitt as the Gemini 4 command pilot, Major White was able to successfully complete a 6,000 mile space walk” on June 3, 1965. We as graduates of the Class of 1966, hope to imitate the space walk” by overcoming the obstacles of the adult world. 2 THOMAS RYAN DEDICATION Looking back at our high school years, you have been one of the major influences in our school life, helping us, through your own good example, to learn to be individuals. Having taught us to leave our childhood fantasies, Mr. Ryan, we can now face life as adults. Therefore, we, the Class of 1966, appreciatively dedicate our yearbook to you, and in future years may you remember us as fondly as we shall remember you. 3 TO THE CLASS OF 1966: For you Commencement will mean embarking on another important phase of your life. During your school years, your teachers and parents have helped you to gain the knowledge and wisdom so essential for a successful adult life. How you use it will now be your decision, and I am sure that each of you will make the proper decision so that you will have a very successful and rewarding life. Sincerely yours, EDWARD T. MORENZONI Superintendent of Schools June, 1966 CLASS OF 1966: Your teachers and I recognize that your class has, in its membership, many students of greater than average ability. Your high school records show that you as individuals possess the quality of reliability and that you are ready to accept responsibility. These three qualities, ability, reliability, and responsibility, are the foundations from which grow the type of young men and women whom we expect to make great contributions to the future success of our country. I am confident that you young men and women will live up to this promise. Good luck and best wishes to each of you. Sincerely yours, HOLLICE L. We were confused and awed as we looked up to the all-knowing Seniors who sent us in the wrong directions. Deciding that we, too, must have some representation in the school, we elected our class officers, Dave Azzinaro, President; John Jackson, Vice-President; Daria Parrilla, Secretary; and Susan Savageau, Social Chairman. Also, representing us on the Student Council were Sandra Hurtado, Billy Friend, Jimmy Smith, and Ronnie Capalbo. We now felt more secure and were on our way to establishing a record for ourselves at Westerly High. Sports took an active role in our Sophomore year. Gary Capalbo, Sal Murano, Brian DiMaggio, Dave Azzinaro, John Berrado, Paul Cofoni, Jimmy Smith, and Ken Wheless were our star players who participated in almost all of the football games. In basketball we were thrilled to see Ronnie and Gary Capalbo among the starting five in many of the games. Backing them up were Eug Aiello, Brian DiMaggio, John Berardo, Sam Fusaro, George Gingerella, Chip Fazio, and Steve Turano. Baseball season saw Gary Capalbo, Ken Wheless, Sal Murano, Sam Fusaro, and Chip Fazio out on the diamond. Nineteen Sixty-four became the first year that Westerly High School was represented by an all Sophomore Chemistry Team at the University of Rhode Island's Chemistry Contest. Daria Parrilla, Ronnie Capalbo, Bobby Serra, Frank Russo, and Doug Gray did an outstanding job in taking second place throughout the state. Frank also took second place in individual honors. New cheerleaders were chosen from our class to replace the graduating seniors. Elizabeth McFarland, Sandra Hurtado, Susan Savageau, and Donna Kessel, captain for 1966, were chosen as our class cheerleaders. Our social event for the year was our Sophomore Hop, Fascination.” A false ceiling of deep blue crepe paper, a wishing well surrounded by beautiful shrubbery, and a swing with ropes of roses were only a few of the many decorations which helped to transform the gym into a springtime garden. The big moment finally arrived as Dave Azzinaro announced the Queen and her court. One by one Paula Alice, Diana Miller, Barbara Champlin, Chris Pellegrino, Daria Parrilla, and Susan Savageau were led to their places on the court. Donna Kessel was crowned queen and seated on the swing of roses. Each couple left that night with a bit of fascination in their eyes. The summer passed quickly and soon we were back at dear old Westerly High. We felt more secure this year and even laughed a little as we watched the new Sophomores hurry around the halls looking for thir rooms only to find that we had sent them in the wrong direction. Again we elected our class officers and student council members. Jimmy Smith, President; George Gingerella, Vice-President; Sandra Hurtado, Secretary and Susan Savageau, Social Chairman, were elected along with our Stu-dnt Council members, Ronnie Capalbo, Tony Smith, and Billy Friend. Thus we began our second year at W.H.S. In sports we were still quite active as our boys took part in football, basketball, baseball, and track. 48 New twirlers were chosen to replace the graduating seniors. Sylvia Blanda, Bertinette Champlin, Kathy Smith, and Laura Giorno, captain, were chosen to be our twirlers for 1966. Barbara Dion, Kathy Meyer, Lynn Gebler, Kathy Beaudreau, Linda Capalbo were the Junior seminar students who attended the Saturday seminars at the University of Rhode Island. Another success for us was our Junior Prom, Chanson D’Amour.” The gym was decorated in three different shades of pink and was truly the setting for the title of the prom, which translated, means Song of Love. Cheryl Speare was chosen as our lovely queen and her court consisted of Sandra Hurtado, Ellen Tattersall, Nancy Agnello, Georgette Diehl, Janice Forgue, and Barbara Vacca. Again our summer passed all too quickly and we were back at Westerly High. This time, however, as the all-knowing Seniors we had met two years before. Class officers elected were, George Luther, President; Eug Aiello, Vice-President; Sandra Hurtado, Secretary; and Susan Savageau, Social Chairman. Our Student Council members were Billy Friend, Rose Marie Sulima, Pat Romero, and Gary Capalbo. Football season was our first exciting program for the year. Co-captains Gary Capalbo and Brian DiMaggio led Vic Guarino, Paul Palumbo, John Fusaro, Jake Levanti, Doug Randall, Frank Russo, Larry Gwaltney, Bob Benson, John Berardo, Dave Azzinaro, Sal Murano, Steve Stellitano, Paul Cofoni, Bill Morrone, Mark Buckley, Joe DePerry, and George Gingerella to Westerly High’s first undefeated season since 1917. The Jeff Moore Memorial Trophy returned to Westerly as a result of their defeating Stoning-ton in both the Armistice and the Thanksgiving Day football games. Individual trophies went to John Berardo and co-captain Brian DiMaggio. With football season over, basketball soon began. Co-captains Ronnie and Gary Capalbo, Eug Aiello, and Brian DiMaggio took their places among the starting five. Other Seniors backing them up were Paul Bernier, Steve Stellitano, and John Berardo. The team participatd in the New Hampshire Basketball Tournament and came home with the second place trophy Our Senior Prom was held in December and was appropriately titled Snowflake Paradise,” as the first snow of the season fell on that evening. Sandra Hurtado was crowned as our lovely queen and her court consisted of Judy Wetmore, Linda Greene, Ellen Tattersall, Georgette Diehl, Sherrie Gradilone, and Barbara Dion. It was truly a memorable evening and one that I’m sure will always be among our fondest memories. Every day brought new excitement to the halls of W.H.S. Faith Beam was the deserving recipient of the D.A.R. award. Class pictures were taken by Mr. Manfredi and soon everywhere could be hard, Did you get your pictures yet? May I have one?” Then came the anxious waiting to see if each senior was accepted by his or her chosen college. We looked forward to our Senior Week, the banquet, the picnic, the reception, and our long awaited, solemn graduation. We looked forward to the future and backward to our past three years at Westerly High. All the fun and security we had and knew at W.H.S. would soon be leaving us, but the memories will never fade, we’re taking them with us. Susan Savageau 49 CLASS WILL As executors of the class of 1966, the privilege of announcing officially this Last Will and Testament falls on us.
