Text from Pages 1 - 112 of the 1962 volume:

PUBLIC SCHOOLS WESTHUY. R. I. Office of Svpermiendent The basic strength and growth of democracy rests on the oread that we can strengthen our rational thought orocessoe. Corsrsuni son, on the other hand, onerstea on the theory that oeople are basically animals to bo osyehologleally conditioned. Therefore, you must loam to think for yourself, and to value democracy because it gives you freedom to think. When you think rationally yon will realise that if you want to remain free you must learn to ooooerate, rather than compete. You will not io things beeauae you want to get ahead of others , but rather to get along with others . Tou will give as mich as you csn to mankind, rather than try to get as much as you can for nothing. Unless your generation can learn to think and clan and work with the youth of other nations, atomic annihilation will be .the fate of mankind. f % 2 ■■ WESTERLY SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL ttr.rrr.itLv. shook island lVm t.twt -onm HnuinLtrinit Fmahcu F. r u oimu Ami fmr-Amnfd OLA- oy c t . have co« Into being Man has orbited the earth and satellites are now orbiting the earth. The yesterdays have passed into lingering memories; the tomorrows hold our future promises. Soon we shall have to leave our childhood fantasies behind us, and step into a world of reality. The world is full of tribulations, but we will meet them with conquering hearts, remembering the kindness and understanding you have portrayed. We shall never be afraid, as long as we follow the pattern of courage you have woven. We shall walk with our heads held high, retaining the honor you have taught us to acquire. When we fall under life's disappointments, we shall remember the patience you have shown, and we shall rise again. Most important of all, when life’s road becomes a quagmire of confusion and crushing despair, we shall pray for strength, and we shall continue onward. And so, the class of 1962, wishes to extend to you, Mr. Steiner, Mr. Pellegrino, and Mr. Sipes, our heart felt gratitude in return for the guidance and unselfishness which have carried us through our high school years. We leave Westerly High with deep appreciation for all you have done for us. MR. SALVATORE AUGERI MRS. Fellow Classmates, Teachers, Parents, and Friends: Now that we have completed our three years at Westerly High, we realize that our various school activities are now a part of our memories. In these past three years, we have been afforded a truly fine education which has helped us to prepare for any future career. Let us realize that it has been our parents and the faculty of Westerly High who have provided this opportunity. Through their aid the standard of our education at Westerly High has maintained a high level. Although our years at Westerly High have been filled with study, they have also provided us with many hours of joy and excitement from various events. Truly, these years have provided us with a basis upon which we can build our future. But remember that this is only the base. Unless we build upon it, it will gradually weaken. Therefore, let us go forth from Westerly High, using our education as a guide for our future endeavors. LOUIS S. RUSSO, JR. Enjoying its finest football season in fifteen years. Westerly rolled up a record of 7-1 for the 1961 season and captured the Suburban West Divisional Crown under the direction of coach Barry Deetz and assistant, Sal Augeri. In their opener the Bulldog eleven met their toughest league opponent. East Greenwich, and managed to hold off a late rally by their counterparts to gain a 12-7 victory. After this Westerly stormed through the Western Division tagging shut-outs against three out of the six league competitors. Led on defense by all-state, middle guard, Bob Gingerella, who tips the scales at 225, and all-division, linebacker, Ed Bruno, the Bulldogs held their traditional rivals, the Stonington Bears, scoreless on Armistice Day and went on to win in a 19-0 verdict over them. However, a strong, determined Stonington team on Thanksgiving Day in the final game of the season ruined Westerly's chances to have its first undefeated, untied team since 1917. Other players mentioned in the selections for divisional honors were Ernie Jacques, first team at offensive end and second team at defensive halfback; Ron Porter, first team at quarterback; Bill Sisco, first team at offensive guard and second team at defensive linebacker; Jack Carson, second team at offensive end; Vero Morrone, second team at defensive tackle; Alex Patton, second team at defensive guard; Tom Beattie, Bob Rainey, and Sam Chimento, honorable mention. 41 BASKETBALL RECORD 1961-62 WHS. BASKETBALL Coach John Stellitano led the Westerly High School basketball team to its eighth class A Suburban Division Championship in his nine years of coaching at W.H.S., but bowed out to league opponent East Providence, a team which they had beaten twice during the regular season, in the semi-finals of the R. I. Interscholastic League Basketball Tournament at Providence College. Co-captain, Pete St. Onge, was the leading scorer of the Bulldog quintet, which compiled a 19-3 record for the season. St. Onge totaled 356 points in 22 games for an average of 16.2 points per game. St. Onge combined with six foot five Bob Sisson to give Westerly a top rebounding team. Sisson followed Pete in the scoring department with 239 points for a 12.0 point average. Together they grabbed 496 rebounds. In league competition the Bulldogs met defeat only once to Tolman, 62-37. Among their top victories were two league conquests over highly rated East Providence, 68-60, and, 57-43. Their record in the Suburban Division, which included DeLaSalle, Tolman, East Providence, St. Raphael, Pawtucket West, Mount St. Charles, and Westerly, was 11-1. Senior Don Sposato, junior Joe Toscano, and sophomore George Greer, rounded out the starting line-up for the Bulldogs. All contributed to the success of Westerly's fine season. 43 CHEERLEADERS LEFT TO RIGHT—Susan Capalbo, Sharon DeFanti, Berry Terranova, Mary Turano, Capt.
