An Important part of this goal has been to help each of you set Individual goals, so that you can contribute to a strong America. In other words, If America Is to achieve her mission, all Americans must have a mission. IN APPRECIATION To these three highly esteemed teachers who have patiently guided us at Westerly High School, the class of 1961 wishes to extend its deepest gratitude and appreciation. There was never a problem, whether scholastic or social, whereby Mrs. Robinson, Mr. Patterson or Mr. Steiner did not render assistance. We had complete confidence in you, and never hesitated coming to you with each specialâ problem. Words alone are inadequate in expressing our blessings and thanks to you for your individual help. You three, have taken the place in our lives of our guiding star, always showing us the right direction. In the years to come, before making other important decisions, each of us will remember this, and will continue following that guiding star which was so willingly pointed to us. 4 MR. HOLL1CE L. Fellow Classmates, Teachers, Parents and Friends: We have now come to the end of a wonderful association with our fellow students and teachers. We shall never forget the three years of excitement, activities, hard work, and satisfaction it has brought to all of us. These enjoyable years would not have been possible if it were not for the encouragement and many sacrifices of our parents. We also wish to thank the citizens of Westerly and the school administrators for providing us with an excellent school system. Their encouragement, patience, and long hours of guiding us in the right direction, are appreciated from the bottom of our hearts. We especially wish to thank our principal, Mr. Stevens, and our class advisor, Mrs. Robinson, who never ceased their efforts to help us solve our many problems. In closing, fellow graduates, we should never forget how fortunate we are to be living in an age of endless opportunities. All of us have the same chance to make the best of these opportunities, because we live in a country that is second to none. Whether we choose to go on to a higher education or to some other vocation in life, let us never forget Westerly High School. Above all, may Westerly High School hold us in the highest esteem. CLASS HISTORY Three years ago, in 1958, we, the Senior Class, began to record our history in the archives of Westerly High School. We are proud of our biography. Always an energetic class, we have vigorously supported all our dances, proms, and other school activities, without losing sight of our scholastic goals. Perhaps the basic reason for such a record has been our pride and respect for our Alma Mater, Westerly High School. As Sophomores, under the leadership of the Student Council, we elected four very capable and industrious officers to guide us through the Sophomore daze which enveloped many of us throughout our early high school days; Frank Capizzano, President; Richard Pendola, Vice-President; Carole Giorno, Secretary and Gary Stenhouse, Treasurer. Student Council members for our Sophomore year were: Rae Anna Foberg, Louis Algieri, and Paul Vitterito. The next project on our agenda was the planning and publicizing of our Sophomore Hop. Anthony Pucci and Brenda Barboza were in charge of the committee. The dance proved to be a great success. Queen of the prom was Donna Booth, and her court consisted of Carole Giorno, Brenda Silvia, Susan Autry, Rita Terranova, Gai Palmer, and Cynthia Davis. Elected as our class officers for our Junior year were: Gary Stenhouse, President; Carl Myllymaki, Vice-President and Treasurer; Carole Giorno, Secretary; and Richard Muntimuri, Social Chairman. Student Council members for our Junior year were: John Gilchrist, Tina Stone, Richard Pendola, and Rae Anna Foberg. Wonderful Townâ was the theme of the Junior Prom, an event which proved to be a huge success. Queen of the prom was Margaret Shibilio, and her court consisted of Penny Clarke, D'Ann Sposato, Pamela Sisson, Rae Anna Foberg, Gai Palmer, and Tina Stone. The Chemistry Team consisting of John Gilchrist, Tom Sculco, Kent Jacobson, Pasquale Nardone, and Cynthia Davis placed third in the annual interscholastic chemistry contest at the University of Rhode Island. Pasquale Nardone ranked third in the individual scoring. The highlight of the athletic year occured when the basketball team played in the New England Tourney in Boston. Participating from our class were Paul Vitterito, Nick Stenhouse, Vic Morgan, Bill Tanner, and Vic Valentini. 37 Junior members chosen to the National Honor Society for their scholarship, leadership, and service were Wayne Cruzan, Kent Jacobson, Robert Sonntag, Tom Sculco, and Jared Van Horn. As we returned from our summer fun, we looked to our Senior year with thoughts of grandeur. Now at last our dreams of being the seniors of the school had become a reality. We settled down to the work ahead of us. We chose, as our class President, Robert Itteilag, as our Vice-President and Treasurer, Carl Myllymaki; as our Secretary, Carole Giorno; and as our Social Chairman, Richard Muntimuri. Following the election of class officers, the 1961 Yearbook Staff was chosen. Those heading the staff were John Gilchrist and Richard Pendola, co-editors-in-chief, and their editorial staff: Tom Sculco, Dolores Sacco, Cynthia Davis, Richard Gobeille, Patti Perri, Janet Kenyon, Joe Patton, Carolyn Abosso, andGeraldSwerdlick. Mr. Saul J. Steiner was our yearbook advisor. Next on our agenda we elected our Student Council officers for our Senior year; John Gilchrist, President; Richard Pendola, Vice-President and Treasurer; and Tina Stone, Secretary. Other elected members of the Council were: Tom Sculco, Paul Ceresa, and Vic Morgan. The theme of our beautiful Senior Prom was Blue Heavenâ. Under the blue hue, Margaret Shibilio, our Junior Prom Queen, crowned our Senior Prom Queen Tina Stone. Our lovely queen was attired in a beautiful blue gown. She was regally attended by: Angela Lombardo, Carole Giorno, Brenda Barboza, Charleen Bruno, Margaret Misisco, and Kathleen Capalbo. During the Second Semester in the mellow tones of the Valentine season, Susan Autry was crowned queen of the Sweetheart Swing by Student Council President, John Gilchrist. Our other lovely Senior representative was Michele Freethy. Our Senior class chose for its play, Seventeenâ, which the audience received with much laughter and enthusiasm. Our play was under the direction of Charles Wyckoff. As our Senior year came to a close, members of our class achieved many awards. Cynthia Davis was presented with the highest award given to a Senior girlâthe D.A.R. Good Citizenship award. Kent Jacobson earned the position of Valedictorian of our class and Thomas Sculco, that of Salutatorian. During the Senior Week there was much excitement within our Senior class. We anxiously awaited the arrival of our Senior picnic, banquet, and reception. Finally the day we were looking forward to arrivedâgraduation. And now, as our years of high school come to a close, we take our places in society and wish the oncoming Senior Class success. 38 ROOM 1 First row: A. Tourville, M. Pellegrino, K. Slctten, M. Mor-rone. FOOTBALL Although the football Bulldogs were not outstanding during league play, they showed the sportsmanlike spirit which all schools should display. Coach Peltier, in his second year of coaching at Westerly High School, showed his ability by bringing the boys on to a season which could have been very successful, if not for some key injuries to main starters. The Bulldogs started the season by scoring a decisive victory over North Providence in the Round Robin, 12-0. The Bulldogs also treat North Providence and Pawtucket West, while playing well on many other occasions. Although not able to beat their arch rival Stonington on Thanksgiving, the Bulldogs played an excellent football game. The high point of the season, however, came when Coach Pel-tier's charges fought their favored opponents from Stonington for the second time. It was an exciting contest with the Bulldogs drawing first blood in the second period, but missing the extra point. The Bears also scored in the second period, missing the extra point and deadlocking, the score at the half, 6-6. The inspired Bulldog line, which played tremendous football throughout the game, dug in and preserved the tie. There were other good points to the 61 season . . . Charlie Dufourâs scoring of 6 IDs; Paul Ceresa s fine iron play at center; Bob Sisco's and Carl Myllymaki's rock-um-sock-um tackling; Bill Tanners and Randy Saunder s fine consistent running and Joe Pescatello s hustle in both Stonington games. The Bulldogs received fine coaching from head coach Bob Peltier and assistant coach Sal Augeri. Also the Bulldogs received fine leadership on the field from Blasting Bob Sisco and Tiger Bill Tanner. Nick Stenhouse, displaying fine end play throughout the season, was named to the Class B all-conference team. None of the boys who played on the '61 Bulldog Football Squad will ever forget winning isn't most important, it s how you play the game BASKETBALL TEAM First row: J. Petrone, Manager; W. Tanner, P. Vitterito, V. Val-emini, N. Stenhouse, R Muntimuri, Assistant-Manager. Second row: Mr. J. Stelliuno, Coach; J. Bettencourt, J. Henderson, R. Sisson, R. Gwaltney, D. Sposato, C. Lamb, P. St. Onge, M. J. Sipes, Assistant-Coach. Missing: J. Toscano and Captain, V. Morgan. BASKETBALL The Westerly High Bulldogs had another fine season, despite the fact that they did not capture the Suburban Title. They qualified for the State Tournament for the eighteenth consecutive time by beating South Kingston in a qualifying game, 64-40, a record unsurpassed in state history. The scrappy Westerly High Five had a total of 18 victories and 5 losses, while performing well on all occasions. These defeats included three squeakers to classy East Providence keeping Westerly from winning both the Suburban Title and qualifying for the finals in the State Tournament. In the first game of the State Tournament the Bulldogs defeated the Central Falls' Warriors 59-44. During the game Westerly gave a good exhibition of team effort as Bob Sisson and Pete St. Onge did a fine job under the boards, and Nick Stenhouse, Vic Morgan, and Vic Valentini, did a good job handling the ball. Nick Stenhouse, and Vic Valentini, did most of the scoring each pumping eighteen points through the nets. In the second game of the tournament the Bulldogs lost a real thriller to East Providence. At the half the Bulldogs were ahead by one point, 25-24. From that time on, it was nip and tuck with East Providence finally coming out on top at the end of the contest, 50-46. Although the boys didn't make the finals or regain the State Title, all Westerly fans were proud of them, because they represented the school and the town with a display of good sportsmanship. Captain Vic Morgan, while averaging 10 points a game, did a tremendous job as a rebounder at the beginning of the year. Later in the year when moved to the back court he did an equally fine job handling the ball and setting up plays. Another fine ball player, Nick Stenhouse, who was second in team scoring with a.12 point average, was the player who always played a fine all-round game while coming up with that clutch basket.â In Vic Valentini, Westerly's outstanding playmaker, the Bulldogs had a player who could shoot from the outside, break up the zone, and could be on the front end of a fast break. Also Bob Sisson and Pete St. Onge, outstanding Juniors on the club, aided in the club's overall shooting and rebounding power. To round out a good ball club you have to have good reserves. Paul Vitterito and Bill Tanner fulfilled these qualifications. Vitterito was a classy ball handler and a fighter, while Tanner was a good shot and a hustler. All the departing seniors of the 1961 class wish Coach Stellitano and Assistant-Coach Jack Sipes the best of luck in future seasons.
