Words alone cannot express our sincere appreciation- for his untiring efforts and patience in guiding the students of our school in becoming better citizens. Once again, our class wishes to express its thanks to you, Mr. Mudge, for everything you have done. We shall always remember you, and we will try to follow the many examples you have shown us in the past years. 3 IN APPRECIATION Mrs. Kathryn Moore Mr. Donald Love To the two people, Mrs. Kathryn Moore and Mr. Donald Love, who have been our guiding lights at Westerly High School, the Class of 1960 wishes to extend a most heart- lilled thanks for their never-failing kindness and help. Whenever we were depressed, they were always there, ready and willing to console us. Words alone cannot suffice to express our deep gratitude. The amazing way in which you, Mrs. Moore, and you, Mr. Love, advised us concerning our special problem, no matter how trivial, will remain a part of us forever. 4 ounb .V -B, ? Fellow Classmates, Teachers, Parents, and Friends: The common path we have tread together for the past three years has ended. We have reached the portals to the future, which only by means of our diplomas can be unlocked. In retrospect, memories of our life together return. No more do we feel the insecurity and inquisitiveness we as Sophomores felt. No longer are we able to look forward to the plans of our Senior year, to the excitement of proms and dances, to the organization of plays and concerts, to the undivided interest of our sports program-to the satisfaction of accomplishment as a unit. Behind this door are individual paths stretching far and widej separating the com- ponents of this world. Perhaps some of the roadways of this maze may cross, bringing a few together once more and again perhaps our paths will be paralleled forever. Before we turn the key to our future lives, we sincerely extend our gratefulness to our parents, who have sacrificed so that we might obtain all that we haveg to our teachers, who patiently strove to clear the briars and branches blocking passageg to Mrs. Moore and Mr. Love, our guidance counselors, who have led us through the thickets of education in this vast forest of knowledgeg and finally to Miss Gernsheimer, not forgetting her vital contributions. As the door is finally opened and we boldly confront the tribulations of the adult world, may we never forget the major roles Westerly High School has prominently played in preparing us for higher education, for responsibility, and for human society. For a few weeks after this meeting there were many confused and excited Sophomores traversing the halls of Westerly High School trying to acclimate themselves to their newly found freedoms, curriculum, and teachers. Gradually, as the feeling of confusion and excitement subsided, the new feeling of unity and school spirit emerged. Our initial act as a class was the election of Michael DeFanti and Mary Turrisi as Sophomore Yearbook representatives. This took place under the direction of Mr. Cyrus Morgan, our class advisor. The election of homeroom representatives to the Student Council soon followed. The members chosen were: Sam Azzinaro, Judith Browne, Peter Chamber- lain, Roger Hamilton, Charles Kitchen, Connie Morgan, Peter Meyer, Judy Tattersall, Mary Turrisi, and Steve Turrisi. Mid-year exams followed soon afterward. These exams were approached with awe and were completed with relief. Thus our first semester drew to a close. The second semester was full of activity. Our class elected Peter Chamberlain, Presi- dent, Michael DeFanti, Vice-President, Diana Dumelow, Secretary, and Dawn Keskinen, Treasurer. Mary Turrisi and Dawn Keskinen were chosen to represent our class on the court of the Sweetheart Swing. This dance was followed by our Sophomore Hop on May 21. Roger Hamilton, General Chairman, was assisted by a large committee under the direction of the following vice-chairmen: Connie Morgan, Almedia Munro, Judy Lord, Doreen Banning, Betsey Carpenter, and Louis Elmo. The lovely queen on the beautiful May evening was Diana Dumelow, attended by Dawn Deering, Nancy Gingerelli, Dawn Keskinen, Connie Morgan, Almedia Munro, and Francene Naccarato, Toward the close of the year, new cheerleaders, who were to be the morale builders of the team, were chosen. They were Doreen Banning, Captain, Martha Nardone, Carole Walker, Francene Naccarato, and Kathy Brown. Kathy Brown was also the winner of the Martha C. Babcock Essay Contest. Immediately after the announcement of the essay contest winner, final examinations were completed. Time stood still until we received our report cards. What a relief! We had completed the first hurdle, now there were only two more to go. 41 UNIOR HISTORY With summer behind us we returned to school feeling ready and competent to meet the challenge before us. We proceeded to elect representatives to the Student Council: Roger Hamilton, Martha Gencarelli, and Tony Itteilagg then followed the election of class officers: Michael Delianti, President, Connie Garofalo, Vice-Presidentg Beverly Viteritto, Secretary, and Roy Larson, Treasurer. Having placed the affairs of our class in the capable hands of our ofiicers and class advisor, Miss Josephine Gernsheimer, we proceeded to the task before us-work, work, and more work. The Junior Class elected Diane Ainsworth and Marlene Naccarato as its represen- tatives to the Sweetheart Swing Court, and was honored when Marlene was chosen to reign as Queen of the Sweetheart Swing, an honor traditionally reserved for a Senior. Our next project was the donation of a full page advertisement to the 1959 Yearbook. Joanne Aloe, Helen Brown, Patty DeBartolo, Alice DeTata, Jeannine Garceau, Connie Morgan, Lindy Ornberg, and Barbara Payne designed the layout for this ad-venture. The beautiful Shower of Stars Junior Prom was held on April 4. This delightful evening was planned under the supervision of Mr. Robert Fallon, Prom Advisor, and Nancy Delicato, Chairman, assisted by seventy-three hard-working committee members. Queen of the night was Nancy Delicato, attended by her ladies-in-waiting: Connie Morgan, Dawn Deering, Gloria Caldarone, Judy Browne, Diane Serra, and Doreen Banning. Our class entered the field of civic affairs when Patty DeBartolo and Charles Ruisi were chosen to represent the school on the newly formed Westerly Youth Commission. Lynda Sacco, John McFarland, Diana Dumelow, Michael DeFanti, and Peter Meyer, the members of the Chemistry Team, represented our school at the U.R.I. competition. Francene Naccarato was chairman of the Senior Reception Committee. This party, honoring the Class of 1959, was the last social event of the year. Soon final exams were over, and then came the day of reckoning. We received our final report cards and with them the knowledge that our Junior Year was behind us and before us was the wonderful, bright prospect of our Senior Year. 42 SENIOR HISTORY Now that the fun and frolic of the summer were over, we returned to school on September 10, 1959. Our dream had finally become a reality for now we were the big wheels of the school. But with this realization came another. With next year's comple- tion of the new regional high school, we would have been the last class from regional schools to graduate from Westerly High. A bit saddened by this thought, we settled down to our first order of business, class elections. After a hard fought campaign, Michael DeFanti was worthily chosen President, Brian Edmond, Vice-President and Treasurer, Rosalie Muntimuri, Secretary, and Almedia Munro, Social Chairman. In the following weeks, election of Student Council members took place under the supervision of the President, Tony Itteilag, and Vice-President, Roger Hamilton. Chosen for the Student Council were: Peter Chamberlain, Charles Kitchen, and Connie Garofalo. Sports were a main interest at this time. It was football season and our team was under the leadership of the Co-Captains, Jim Felicetti, Charles Kitchen, and Joe LaPere. A new organization, the Girls' Athletic Association, was formed. Its ollicers were: Lucille Lupinacci, Chairman, Mary Turrisi, Vice-Chairman, Judy Lord, Recording Secretary, Judy Tattersall, Corresponding Secretary, and Lindy Ornberg, Intramural Chairman. On November 14, the annual Senior Prom, Bali Hai, took place under the direc- tion of Almedia Munro and her committee heads, namely, Melinda Ornberg, Doreen Banning, Nancy Gingerelli, Connie Tobin, Dawn Deering, Shirley Falcone, and Eugene Gencarelli. Highlight of the evening was the coronation of the lovely queen, Almedia Munro, and the selection of her court, Dawn Deering, Judy Browne, Gloria Caldarone, Diane Serra, Kathy Brown, and Diana Dumelow. Previous to this event, the 1960 Yearbook Staff was chosen. Those heading it were Judy Lord and Beverly Viteritto, co-editors in-chief, and their editorial staff, John McFarland, Elaine Chiaradio, Sandra Alliero, Michael DeFanti, Brian Edmond, Charles Ruisi, Almedia Munro, Nancy Gingerelli, Diana Ains- worth, and Tony Itteilag. During the second semester, our basketball team, under the Co-Captainship of Peter Chamberlain, Roger Hamilton, and Maury Lamb, won its sixth consecutive Suburban League Championship. February 15, 1960, marked the occasion of the Sweetheart Swing. Seniors gracing the court were Patty Sheldon and lovely queen, Shirley Falcone. The time of awards was approaching. Judy Lord was the recipient of the D.A.R. Good Citizenship Award. Tony Itteilag earned the position of Valedictorian of our class and John Vetelino, that of Salutatorian. On March 30 and 31, the Senior play, Charlie's Aunt, was presented under the direction of Mr. Carlson. With the oncoming of the end of our high school years, all the Seniors were anxious about graduation. During Senior Week, we were enter- tained at the Senior picnic, banquet, and reception. Then came the day we had all looked forward to-graduation. And so, armed with our diplomas, we now take our places in society. 43 Mosi Likely to Sm-.ceeb I Di6 Jvlosi- For School I .nose 1l'l'l'21xfQQU'lt N0 Sf Fowler ' Qmss XV:-ii-e.v Mosf kspecteb 1 :Host S op h ist i C QXQ 6 Mosf Mm-2 Na+ g Mos! BASKETBALL Basketball again shook the very foundations of Westerly High for a good Part of this winter, and when the season was completed, the Blues had won just about every trophy in Rhode Island and performed capably in Boston Garden in the New Englands. The Bulldog hoop machine totaled 21 wins against six losses for the 1960 season The Bulldogs 20th win, against LaSalle in the state finals, not only assured Westerly fans that theirs was the best high school hoop array in the state but also provided the reason for making that trip to Boston , which everyone had been talking about for so long. Getting to the championship game itself, the Bull- dogs never were better in scoring a fantastic 77 to 72 upset win over LaSalle Academy. Long before the game the two fine teams were billed as the two top in Rhody, but the Maroon from Providence were generally con- ceded to be a shade sharper. Thus the Blues entered the game as underdogs, and the Bulldogs started to roll after two minutes. Much to the delight of Westerly fans and to the amazement of everyone else, the Bull- dogs held LaSalle to a meager four points in the first quarter and led 15 to 4. The locals played increasingly good ball as' the game moved on, and nearly everyone stared in disbelief when the Blues jumped ahead at the start of the fourth quarter. The final period was the story of the game. LaSalle roared back and closed the gap. But the Bulldogs re- fused to fold, came back with a tremendous counter- thrust of their own, and captured their fourth state title in six years. Victory was Sweet for the Bulldogs, their student fans, and nearly everyone else connected with the team. Besides taking the state honors, Rog Hamilton was named outstanding player and to the first all tourney team. High scorer at the Providence College gym, there was no doubt who the best player on the floor was on that Wednesday evening. Maury Lamb was third out- standing played and also on the first team. Lamb, who played a big part in all the victories during the season but often went unnoticed, blossomed out in the tourna- ment and was the most talked about player on the BASKETBALL WHS OPP. 85 ........ ..... Playing most of the tournament with a severly sprained ankle, something which very few people knew, Fred Roever still was a standout and placed on the second all-tourney team. Hamilton made the first all-state team, a mythical live based on the players' performances throughout the season. High scorer for two years, Rog was as good as everyone expected and better. The 6-2 forward's first claim to fame was his game winning basket against South Kingston in the '58 state finals, but he went on to even bigger and better things. Roever also was named to the first all-state five, after playing only one season of varsity ball. Injuries in his soph and junior year kept Fred from gaining experi- ence, but he came a long way in his senior season to gain a well deserved award. Lamb, who probably set up more baskets than any- one in the state, was placed on the second all-state five. These three also took places on the first team, Class A Suburban Division. Pete Chamberlain, who tallied 26 points in the state finals, and fifth starter, Kent Curry, who scrapped long after others had stopped, were named to the third Suburban team. Coach Stellitano now has his fourth state champion- ship in six years, in addition to a second and third place. The Blues seven titles in thirteen seasons is considered to be a record for any high school in the country, none withstanding. And all this has happened to a class B school against class A competition. Except for the disasterous night against Wilbur Cross, the Blues performed well in Boston. Hamilton and Roever averaged 20 points each for three games as the Bulldogs edged Smith Academy, but bowed to the two Connecticut representatives. However, it was more of a thrill to play in Boston garden than anything e se. A banquet honoring area basketball teams, the an- nual banquet sponsored by the Boosters' Club, and various other dinners capped another tremendous hoop season. SCHEDULE WHS OPP. 71 .......... ...... The 1960 edition of the Westerly Bulldog baseball team compiled an eight and six record in the Southern Division, finishing in third place behind Coventry and Deering. The Blues were in the running for a play-off berth until the last week of the season, when they dropped a pair of league tilts. Outstanding pitching and particularly the hitting of john Barber combined to make Ray Wright's first sea- son a fairly successful one. Nick Stenhouse and Captain Dennie Marie both pitched well on different occasions, although often they had very few runs with which to work. Stenhouse, in two consecutive games against Bis- hop Hendricken and South Kingston, struck out 38 batters in sixteen innings. Against the Bishops, Nick allowed only one hit, a scratch single. Marie's top game also came against Hendricken. The Bulldog Captain had a no hitter going for six and two-thirds innings, but gave up a bloop hit with two outs in the seventh to lose the distinction of becoming the first WHS hurler to throw a no-hitter in many seasons. Barber set enough marks to be the single outstanding player this season. The junior catcher handled his posi- tion behind the plate with versatility, but it was his hitting that made him a standout. The lefthanded sticker batted .468 in league play, easily winning the Southern Division batting title. The .468 batting aver- age was second high in the state, five points behind Frank Vollaro of Barrington. These two players each banged out 21 hits to lead all players in the four divi- sions of the interscholastic league. In the post season all-state selections, Barber earned a berth on the second all-state team. Vic Morgan, WHS second baseman, was on the second all-Southern Divi- sion team, behind Barber who made the first squad. Morgan was a big clutch for the Blues and was called the best .250 hitter in the league. Stenhouse made the third team behind standout hurlers, john Zielski and jim Conn. Dick Pendola also received honorable mention. The Bulldogs dropped a pair of games to the Ston- ington Bears, who went on to capture the Connecticut state title. For the future, Coach Wright and assistant coach, jack Sipes have most of their players back for next season. In the final game this year, Coach Wright used his juniors and sophs at every position and they proved that they will be a top notch outfit next season. Captain Marie and his fellow seniors carry the mem- ory with them of having played on three consecutive teams. When they were sophs, they finished second in the league and advanced to the state semi-finals. In their junior season, the Blues came in second in the SD and advanced to the quarter finals of the state play-offs. This season, the Bulldogs were third in the league, al- though they missed qualifying for the post season com- petition. BASEBALL SCHEDULE WHS OPP. 1 ........ .....
