We hope that the DRIFTWOOD may, in some measure, show the gratitude and admiration we hold for: MISS HELENA DUNN MR. DONALD LOVE MISS JOSEPHINE GERNSHEIMER IN APPRECIATICN MRS. ADA STEDMAN The Class of '58 wishes to extend a most grateful and heartfelt thanks to Mrs. Stedman for her able assistance and untiring efforts in helping us prepare our yearbook. Her faith- ful attendance at every meeting was invaluable, in that we always had someone to look to for guidance and encourage- ment. Whenever we were depressed and felt that we were making no progress, Mrs. Stedman always oEered a friendly word of assurance. Words alone cannot suffice to express our gratitude. Years from now, however, upon thumbing through the pages of this yearbook, we shall see Mrs. Stedman's picture, and recall her inspiring words and smiling face. MR. LAWRENCE MCGUIRE Superintendent PRINCIPAL'S ADDRESS SUPERINTENDENTS MESSAGE In your high school years you have had the opportunity to gain the knowledge and wisdom necessary for a successful beginning in your adult life. Each of you has received equally the best of the experience of teachers skilled in imparting to youth the learnings necessary to success. The degree to which you accepted them and, particularly, the degree to which you will use them, will determine your success in the future. It is my fondest hope that each of you will use to the fullest extent the wisdom which can come from the knowledge you have received in your high school years, and that, as a result, each of you will know only happiness and success in the years to come. Some of you will probably remember that when you young men and women entered high school three years ago I went over with you the benefits that you could expect to derive from your three years of high school training. Now that your days in high school are drawing to a close, I think it might be wise for you to take an inventory by asking yourself if you did get out of your stay here all that you expected to get. Ask yourselves the following questions: 1. Did I look for the best in my teachers and classmates? 2. Did I look for the best in the program and rules? 3. Did I do my utmost to develop my talents and abilities? 4. Did I learn to get along with other people? 5. Am I a better citizen of my community as a result? If you can answer yes to all of these questions, then I believe that you are just finishing three of the most profitable years in your life, and that you may expect many more and even better ones in the future. If your answer is no to any one of these questions, then remember that it is never too late to improve yourselves. The sooner you get started, the better. Good luck and best wishes to each of you. Fellow Classmates, Teachers, Parents, and Friends: Realizing the true meaning of our Commencement activities, we turn back to recall the three years we have enjoyed so much here at Westerly High School. Regretfully we do this. It puts behind us the joy and excitement of our high school career, and makes us realize with startling clarity the necessity of hard work in the future. Armed with our diplomas, we shall take our places in society. Some of us will go on to future learning, others to their intended careers, but whatever our lot in life, we shall endeavor to assume our responsibilities with hope and courage. The road before us is not easy. It is a long, hard, and rough way. There will be much less play from now ong so we must End recreation in our work. Once this aim is accomplished, success is assured. Ever mindful of the privilege that has been ours to receive such a fine high school education, we gratefully thank those people whose combined efforts made our gradua- tion possible - the taxpayers of Westerly, who contributed the basic means for the preparation for our future life. We express deep gratitude to the teachers, whose instruction and guidance have delivered us safely to the threshold of society. To our principal, Mr. Stevens, and to our class advisors, Miss Gernsheimer, Miss Dunn, and Mr. Love, we give heart-felt thanks for a job well done. It was through their untiring efforts that we successfully weathered the perils and hazards of high school. We shall never forget them. Our three wonderful years at Westerly High School are nearing completion. Each one of us will go on his separate way. Whatever your undertaking in life, may I wish every member of the class of 1958 the best of luck in the years to come. May your lives be filled with success and happiness, and May God Bless and Keep You until we meet again. JOHN R. We leave this hall we've known so well With memories in our hearts. Although we walk our paths alone, There's one thing that we know- The Lord is always with us No matter where we go. We'll all think back from time to time To happiness we've shared, And it will bring a glow to us To think of ones who've cared. We've met the taskg we've passed the test. Dear Lord, may we always do our best. Thus we bid farewell to Westerly High Whose pride and glory we hold dear inside. Twin victories over arch-rival Stonington marked the 1957 foot- ball season as a successful one, al- though Wesrerly's overall record was 4-5-1. The gridiron Bulldogs defeated the Bears, 21-12, on Veterans' Day, and completed the sweep with a 14-8 victory on Thanksgiving Day morning, when Frank Chimento, regular center on the Blue and White grid team, played end for one play and scored the winning touch- down on a long pass from quarter- back joe Servidio late in the fourth quarter with Stonington leading, 8-7, at the time. Servidio, Bob Henderson, and Bob Perrin were the co-captains of the team, which compiled a 2-5-1 rec- ord in Rhode Island Class B Con- ference play. The top linemen on the team were Perrin, Henderson, Chimento, Eric Magnusson, Dave Greene, Carl Carboni, Bob. Chiaradio, and Bob Stone. Servidio, jim Cappizano, and jack Collins composed the Blue and White backfield. Murano was our of action during most of the cam- paign with a leg injury. Hartford Bulkeley Roger Hamilton's basket with two seconds remaining in the state finals gave Westerly High's basketball team a 70-68 victory over South Kingstown and State Champion- ship laurels for the sixth time in the past 12 years. After sweeping through their Class A Suburban Divi- sion schedule and the State Tournament, the Bulldogs en- tered the New England Tournament at Boston Garden with their sights set on the sectional title. A 68-50 victory over Bishop Bradley High of Man- chester, New Hampshire got the Westerly five through the hrst round, but Somerville High proved to be too strong for the Rhode Island representative and eliminated the Bulldogs in the semi-finals, 66-53. ln the consolation game, with third place in the tourney at stake, Hartford Bulkeley ran up an early lead and fought off the Bulldogs for a 71-70 win. Ron Stenhouse was selected on the All-New England Tournament team for the second time in three years. Both Stenhouse and Frank Reale had been named to the All- State and All-Rhode Island Tournament teams a week earlier. Westerly's overall record was 23-5 and included three losses by a single point, two of which, to South Kingstown and East Providence, were later avenged. A jaunt to the Berlin, New Hampshire Winter Sports Festival was a highlight of the season. Victories there over Berlin High and Groveton, N. H. left Westerly in a tie with Adams, Mass. for Festival honors. Bob Henderson, Whitney Randall, Carl Carboni, and Jim Clancy provided Stenhouse and Reale with ample scor- ing support. Randall, Carboni, and Vern Eleazer were elected co- captains of the 1958-59 team. After 20 years as baseball coach, Bob Mudge decided to hang up his spikes at the end of the year. Said Mr. Mudge of the 1958 team, It was one of the fightingest outfits I had since becoming coach. All three early season losses were revenged. The Bulldogs were the first team in the state to hand South Kingstown a regular season defeat in any sport, topping South, 9-1, after losing the first game between the South County rivals, 10-0. The reversal of the Deer- ing loss, however, was the big one. It clinched second place in the R. I. Southern Division, and gave the Bulldogs a berth in the State Tournament. In the playoffs, Westerly passed its first round test with a 2-1 victory over Woonsocket but fell before Tolman, 8-3 and 4-2. Ron Stenhouse was the mainstay of thepitchin staff, com- piling an 8-3 record in 13 appearances. Dennie Marie, Carl Car- boni, Bob Chiaradio, and joe Arruda also saw mound duty during the year. Captain Frank Chimento handled all of them from behind the plate. Chiaradio, Arruda, Bob Stone, john Cayer, Mike Capalbo, and Tucker Terranova were the regular infielders while Bob Cohen, Don West, joe Servidio, and Vern Eleazer patrolled the outfield. At the conclusion of the season, Terranova was electd captain of the 1959 team. Rf ii, ARMY TEAM First row Cl. to r.D: E. McCann, G. Caldarone, A. Lamb, A. DeBarrolo, P. Hogan, E. Chiaradio, R.
