CYRUS MORGAN Trailing through Westerly High School and leading into Room 28, the guidance room, is a path worn by the many braves and squaws of the class of 1957 who desired a pow-wow with the wise white father and class advisor, Cyrus N. Morgan. Sometimes we visited him to make peace (after trouble with classwork), and still other times it was to receive a new feather for our headpiece (after receiving his commendations). It is also certain that every brave and squaw gratefully welcomed his advice concerning plans for our new life upon leaving Indian territory. It is not just Indian talk when we call Mr. Morgan wise white father, for the fatherly attention he gave to us justifies the use of the word. He took the interest in us that a father takes in his child and understood us like a father. And so, as a small homage to demonstrate our deep appreciation, we, the class of 1957, dedicate to you, Mr. Morgan, the results of our final efforts as a class, our yearbook, The Bulldog. JUH 9 3 Seniors: LAWRENCE McGUIRE Superintendent For you. Commencement means embarking on a new career, an unknown career, but one which can mean great joy in life to you, and one which will carry you through the greatest decades of the history of America. Though the words are trite, you stand on the threshold of an entirely new life. But these words are not meaningless to you; they should have a special significance. You, as an individual, and as a class, have the greatest potential, the best opportunity any group, any individual ever had. I need not tarry over the future of America in the decades to come, but 1 must and shall call on every one of you to be leaders in the America of tomorrow. 1 know every one of you, by name and ability. And there is not one of you who does not have the ability to be a great leader. None of you has yet been tested to the full limit of your abilities. Each of you must go on, beyond the areas of the school to learn what your abilities are, and to use those abilities, for your greater happiness and the greater glory of America. All of you, each of you, has it in him to be three times the person he thinks he can be. I know. Do it. For me, this Commencement means the scattering of friends who have come to mean much to me. HOLLICE L. STEVENS Principal Seniors: My congratulations to the graduates of 1957 for having reached the goal for which you have been striving for the past three years. I hope that as you leave this school that it will be with a feeling of pride in the school and with fond remember-ances of the many pleasant experiences that you have had here and of the friendships you have made here. Your teachers and I appreciate very much your many contributions to the morale of the school, your willingness to work harmoniously with teachers and fellow-students and the leadership which you have taken in many school activities. It will be difficult for us to forget the scholastic success of this class as well as the outstanding contributions which your members have made to athletics and other extracurricular activities. I trust that as a result of your stay here at Westerly High School that you are now willing and ready to face the problems of life and that you have gained an ability to solve these problems. Good luck and best wishes to each of you. 4 MR. EDWARD T. MORENZONI Administrative Assistant to the Superintendent MR. ROBERT MUDGE, Vice Principal Biology, Baseball Coach MISS DAGMAR E. It was a great feeling and a great honor to enter this school in the fall of 1954. It is with greater feeling and a greater sense of pride and honor that we leave our beloved school in the spring of 1957. We shall all carry many pleasant memories of our joyous days here and shall never forget the friendships we have established during these three happy years. We shall always cherish the wonderful times we have had; the excitement of the athletic contests, the fun of the interesting classes and teachers, and the fun of the dances and different programs throughout our three years. We should graduate this year with the feeling that we have all benefited considerably from these well-rounded experiences. We must realize that our graduation was made possible by the combined efforts of many people. We thank the taxpayers of the town of Westerly, without whose help we could not have received our education. We thank our many wonderful teachers who have so ably guided us through our three years at Ward Senior High. They have supplied us with the proper tools — it is now up to us to use them to their fullest advantage. We express deep gratitude to our principal, Mr. Stevens, and to our class advisor, Mr. Morgan, who have contributed greatly to the success of our class. Mr. Morgan has not only been a great advisor, but a wonderful friend — one we shall never forget. Our three wonderful years at Westerly High School would never have been the same without the undergraduates. It is the sincere hope of the class of 1957 that the class of 1958 and all succeeding classes may uphold the fine record that we, the class of 1957, have established here at Westerly High School. We now step over the threshold of high school, out into the big wide world which holds much in store for us. Many of us will continue ur education; many will find jobs and go to work; still others will enter the service. May I wish each and every member of the class of 1957 the best of luck in all your future undertakings, whatever they may be, and God be with you!” JAMES A. The annual Sweetheart Swing was being planned by the Student Council. We elected Dolores Serra and Ruth Vars to represent our class. A very bright star certainly must have guided us through our first social event, our Sophomore Hop. We attribute its tremendous success to the chairman, Ruth Vars. We chose for our theme Three Coins in a Fountain. The center of attraction was the rippling fountain into which wishful lovers tossed coins. Other evidence of the beauty of Mother Nature was displayed by an artificial arbor. Sprays of flowers on the gym walls added much to the general effect. This was proved when Carolyn Giorno and Phyllis Pietra-allo won second and third prizes respectively in the Martha C. Life’s highway we will travel. Its burdens we will bear. We will cherish the tokens of friendship. We received from everyone, They will all be engraved in our memory. When graduation is over and done. May we all make Westerly proud of us, By the Golden Rule we shall abide, And whichever direction we follow, May conscience be our guide. A few silent tears will be shed, But they will prove worthwhile, When we think of what we've accomplished Only then, we are able to smile. So as we say our last farewell. Vars S. Brayman B. Brown C. Giorno 9n 111 emonam Coach John DiGangi Thursday, May 23, was a day of excitement around the school. It was the date for the annual softball game between the faculty and the student body. At one o’clock our principal, Mr. Stevens, gave the familiar cry to play ball and the game was underway. Both students and faculty were having a gay time, not knowing that the grim reaper would be an unexpected guest. About midway through the game our beloved coach, John DiGangi, left the ball game with hardly anyone knowing it. We have learned since that he went to his doctor from where he was rushed to the Westerly Hospital, and at three o'clock he succumbed to a heart attack. On Friday, May 24, the Stars and Stripes of the school were at half mast, and the pupils all had sad expressions on their faces. That day the cafeteria was listless as the pupils paid their respects by remaining quiet all three lunch periods. At the wake when 1 looked at the coach, who seemed to have a little smile on his face, I choked up with tears as I said to him under my breath, How can you be so near and yet so far away? I'm proud to be a student of Westerly High School, and if the coach knew what was happening, he would have been the proudest man in the world, for at the funeral sat the entire faculty, and at least 85 V of the student body with solemn faces. It was only God's will that took our coach, and I'm praying that you dear Lord will open the gates of Heaven, and let his soul rest in peace, because not many men in the world deserve as much as he does. :ii: •:::ssi s’iiii;, Congratulations and the best of luck!
