KATHRYNE MOORE 54414 Some know her through working on the Barker, others know her by her love for cats, and still others kinow her by constructive English classes. She pos- sesses a warm, sunny disposition and a smile that will melt anyone's reserve. She is a very entertaining per- son to be with at all times - who is she? Your first guess is correct, she is Miss Dorothy Hanson. Her years of teaching school are over and her time will once more be her own. Everyone will miss coming into her sunny room mornings and seeing her busy at work behind her desk. One can not forget such a wonderful person! So to Miss Hanson, we wish many happy years in her retirement. fb We, the class of 1956, dedicate our yearbook, The Nautilus to Mrs. Kathryne Moore. This is our way of showing our appreciation for the guidance she has given us during our three years here at Westerly High. Her sincere willingness to know and understand our problems has helped to guide us toward our future goals. Once again our class wishes to express our thanks to our class adviser, Mrs. Moore. FINIZIO ur President PRESIDENTS ADDRESS Fellow Classmates, Members of the Faculty, Parents, and Friends: Three beloved years at Vfard Senior High School have now come to an end. We shall always value the memories and friendships established here during these three happy years. We are thankful for the splendid times we have had, the fun of the dances and entertainments, the thrills of athletic contests, the pleasures of interesting classes, and finally the satisfaction of academic achievement. The personality of each member of our class has benehted from these well-rounded experiences. We are thankful for the oppor- tunities provided for us by the townspeople of Westerly. As we pause in retrospect, we realize that the efforts of many have been combined to help us. We express our gratitude to our parents who have sacrificed much to provide for us both an honest, substantial home life and the opportunity to obtain a formal education. We thank the taxpayers of the town of Westerly and the administrative oflicers for providing and conducting our school system. We thank our teachers and advisers who have skillfully guided our scholastic progress, proving friendly and helpful to each and every member of the Class of 1956. We express deep gratitude to our prin- cipal, Mr. Stevens, and to our counselor, Mrs. Moore, both of whom have contributed greatly to the success of our class. We extend our best wishes to the undergraduates, who, in conjunction with the faculty, have made Westerly High School a pleasant memory to the members of the graduating class. To the undergraduates we wish the satisfaction of accomplishment such as the Class of 1956 has gained in three years at Westerly High. Graduation day is truly a commencement of living, not an end. Receiving a diploma is not necessarily a farewell gesture to Westerly High School and all the friendly rela- tions that have gone with .it. We shall cherish especially the training and ideals incul- cated during our school career. We, the Class of 1956, expressing our continued interest in the welfare of the school, do pledge, as we go forth, to uphold the honored ideals and traditions of Westerly High School. C Norman J. BARBER Every member of the Westerly High School student body and faculty was shocked and saddened by the un- timely death of Samuel R. Barber, one of the most esteemed members of our faculty. During the first month our all-important elections took place. To guide us we chose Captain Roy Bailey CPresidentJ , First-mate Joe Zybrowski CVice-presi- dentj, Second-mate Bob Stenhouse fTreasurerD, and Third-mate Tessie Barber CSecretaryD . As the brisk autumn days passed, our class began its days of boot training. The major task was to bring out the unknown athletic abilities of the new sailors for the football squad. The squad was supported by the music of the Navy Band in which some of our new sailors participated. In order to let the upper-shipmates know we were around, two of our more- artistic sailors, Anita Roever and Jean Taylor, created our display for the Thanks- giving Day contest. The production of The Fortune Tellern was given for our entertainment. The hidden talents of Ginny Gentile, Sue Edmond, Donna Palardy, Heather MacDonald and Cindy Siswick were revealed by their singing and dancing in this well-known operetta. Bringing us into the winter months, several of our mates showed their basket- ball ability by playing on our jayvee team. As the winter months passed, we were well represented at the Sweetheart Swing by Heather MacDonald and Jean Romanella. Before we neared port after a year's voyage, some of our mates went in train- ing for the baseball team. As we entered port in April before our leave, we had our Sophomore Hop, the annual spring dance aboard ship, called Ebb Tide. Anita Roever was chosen as our pretty Queen of the Seaf, junior Year The summer leave was over, hastily everyone returned to face his second class with a determination to raise his rank. t As our ship was leaving port for its second cruise, we again elected officers: Captain Skip Finizio CPresidentD, First-mate Bob Federico CVice-presidentb, Second-mate Bob Stenhouse CTreasurerD, and Third-mate Angetta Turano QSec- retaryj. Events began to get underway, beginning with the football season. Chosen to represent our class on the first team were Ken Parrilla, Nip Gulluscio, and Bob Federico. Cheering the team onward were Ginny Gentile, Anita Roever, Toni Parise and Heather MacDonald along with our now experienced band members. The cheerleaders, as well as Bob Leibowitz, Bob Federico, joe Barboza, jean Romanella, Pat Terpening, and Pat Boucher displayed great talent in the presenta- tion of the Frolics. Working hard during this time was our chemistry team, Joe Dotolo, Arnold Moorhouse, and Bob Giordano. The reward for their hard work was the winning of third place in the state competitions. juniors showing their skill on the basketball court this year were Roy Bailey, John Garofalo, Dick Guerrette, and Jamesie Williamson, all playing varsity ball. The winter months came to a close with Judy Saunders and Ginny Gentile representing us at the Sweetheart Swing. At our upper shipmates' graduation exercises it was announced that Avis Sylvia had brought honor to our class by winning second prize in the Martha C. Babcock Essay Contest. Our second eventful cruise was ended and we were given our second leave. Senior Year We returned to our ship for the final voyage. The cheerleaders with their newly-chosen Captain, Ginny Gentile and her assistant, Heather Mac- Donald were hard at work cheering the team to victory. Drum major, john Trom- bino and Sue Edmond, drum majorette headed our colorful band. At our senior prom, Carousel, joan Gobeille, an attractive new member to our crew was chosen carnival queen. The performance of Sonja Pearson, Judy Morris, Llyn Palmer, jean Roma- nella, Sue Edmond, Nancy Husselbee, Shirley Davis, Cindy Siswick, Tessie Barber, Barbara Sidebottom, Pat Boucher, jamesie Williamson, and Dick Guerrette in the musical comedy, Marrying Marian, delighted us. Our shipmates representing us at the Sweetheart Swing this year were Sandra Boumenot and Anita Roever. I Love Lucy was chosen for the annual senior play. The leads went to joan Gobeille, Robert Pacheco, Angetta Turano, and Roger Schonning. The supporting cast was Heather MacDonald, Bob Federico, Antoinette Parise, Martha Turrisi, Norman Finizio, Gorden Greene, Joe Dotolo, and John Chimento. As Student Council President, Norman Finizio helped straighten out the problems on our voyage. The D. A. R. Good Citizenship Award was presented to our mate Anita Roever. The spring sport, baseball, started early this year with Captain john Garofalo leading the team steadfastly through all the games. As the 1956 Nautilus goes to press, we are left with a feeling of nostalgia. The many friends we have made and the new experiences we have had begin a long list of memories. We realize that the responsibilities which have been placed upon our shoulders during these years will prepare us to take our places in the lworldg these years have been only the beginning of our education. We now eagerly anticipate the senior banquet, the senior picnic, and our last class dance, the Senior Reception. However, Graduation night, a night of both joy and sadness, stands foremost in our hearts. President of the Senate - Roy Bailey Recorder - Donna Palardy MODEL LEGISLATURE One of the most outstanding features of the year was the Model Legislature which took place in the cafeteria on Tuesday, December Zlst. The cafeteria tables were arranged in a semi- circle to seat all the members of the Senior Class. At the head table, acting as President, was Roy Bailey with Delia Bernard and Donna Palardy as his recorders. Prior to the actual Legislature was a preliminary meeting, which took place on Monday, the 20th, and in which each committee, directed by its chairman, discussed the bills previously introduced to the Legislature by a committee with Angetta Turano as its head. The procedure ran much the same as would that of the Legislature at the State House in Provi- dence, where the proposed bill is read by the re- corder, explained by the committee head, and then either voted on by the whole Legislature, returned to the committee for further improvement, or tabled. Among the several bills discussed, the one creat- ing most controversy was a bill concerning the lowering of the voting age from twenty-one to eighteen. A heated argument took place with each side presenting its opinions and with those in favor finally winning their point, although the final vote was extremely close. Perhaps the most valuable factor in the Legisla- ture was that it stimulated logical thinking, which in turn promoted good debating. The students filing out of the cafeteria commented that they en- joyed the Legislature immensely and hoped that it would become a tradition at W.H.S. COMMITTEE HEADS 'Ill -1 I an!
