. THE SENIOR Commencement Issue 1955 Westerly High School WESTERLY, RHODE ISLAND Dedication JOSEPHINE GERNSHEIMER We are dedicating our yearbook to our counselor, Miss Josephine Gernsheimer. For three years she has endured our many problems and class antics. Even with our sometimes irritating propositions, she has always given patient understanding and welcome guidance to everyone. In addition to being a wonderful teacher, she has been a very good friend. Thank you, Miss Gernsheimer, for everything you have done. We shall always remember you, and all of us will try to follow the many examples you have shown us in the past three happy years. The Senior Year Book — 1955 MR. HOLLICE L. H in H- 73 sO The Senior Year Book — 1955 President’s Address Classmates, teachers, and friends: Although the class of 1955 is about to leave Ward Senior High, I am sure we shall all carry many pleasant memories of our joyous days here. It hardly seems possible that three short years ago we entered the school, green sophomores. Look at us now, big Seniors! Many of us are sorry we have to leave. Remember how thrilling it was, girls, to wait in wild anticipation for the certain someone to ask you to the Junior or Senior Prom? What a wonderful evening it was, glittering gowns, dreamy music and all the trimmings that go with such a festive occasion! The boys that could not, or did not attend any of these festivities, do not know what they have missed, as this is an essential part of school activity. Our high school careers are now about to come to a close. We have been supplied with the proper tools, so let’s use them to their fullest advantage. We must prove to our parents, teachers, and townspeople that they have not labored and sacrificed in vain. Whether we choose to further our education or not, we have built the foundation of whatever career we choose. We now step over the threshold of high school, out into the big wide world which will swallow us. Many will continue their education; many will find jobs and go to work. Uncle Sam needs men and they must be young, strong, and wise. These will be graduates of high school. Some of our fellow classmates are already in the armed services of our country. Good luck, fellows, and “God be with you!” We must never forget our wonderful class adviser. Miss Gernsheimer. She has not only been a great adviser, but a wonderful friend and helper. Such a wonderful person will always be highly considered. This year of 1955, we welcome with great pride, the coach of the R. I. Championship Basketball Team, John Stellitano. He has been an excellent coach and has taken W. H. S. by storm with his brown eyes and curly hair. Congratulations to Coach Stellitano and the team! We must not forget our faculty, which has prepared us for the long struggle ahead. They have had many trying times, but everything seems to turn out for the better. We thank you all for your understanding and the help you have so generously given us. The class of ’55 leaves W. H. S. in the hands of ’56. May you do your best to keep the school the best ever! Until we meet again, to each and every member of the class of ’55, a sincere wish for the best of luck in all your future undertakings. JAMES SMITH, President, Class of '55 8 ) - The Senior Year Book — 1955 Class Song FAREWELL TO WESTERLY (Tune: Swansea Town) Oh, Farewell to you, our Westerly, ten thousand times a-dieu! Although the time has come to leave we know that we’ll miss you. We will hold you in our memories, and tho wfe may be far away, We’ll always treasure in our hearts, our graduation day. Refrain Our high school years have quickly passed, we have finally reached our goal, But still we live in hopes to see dear Westerly forever more. By MARGARET MANDELLA PHYLLIS KENYON Class Poem We leave the beloved halls of learning, The shadowed corridors no more to roam; But our thoughts will often wander back To flit amid the buzz and chatter of posterity. A golden path is rolling out ahead We see it bright, unspotted; And before we step upon that road, We take a glance in retrospect. This backward look will afford us in the future Many a pleasant reverie Laughing tireless scamps were we, What cared we for the world? Now we go to face that world; Men and women about to tread upon a winding maze; And in our journeying on the Road of Life There may one day flicker before us, the memory of our high schooi days. James Smith has been unanimously elected president of the International Society of Little Guys. Lest week the grand opening of Reale’s International Food Stores took place, and Mary Vacca, proprietor, told the public that service to the average homemaker would be the store’s prime objective. To attract men to do more shopping, she has hired Jean Nardone, Miriam Osterman, Paula Horton, Marie Panciera, and Jean Palmisano as clerks. Moviedom is on its ear! Angie Algiere, JoAnn Bettencourt, and Helen Barbone are now starring in a Hollywood production of the feminine version of Dumas’ “Three Musketeers.” It is wonderful to realize Westerly, R. I., has produced such talent. The M. G. M. Studios have just announced that the title of the outstanding movie usher of 1980 goes to Monroe Pendleton. He was chosen because of his long, distinguished, and devoted service at United Theatre. Dominic Galluci has been stopped for speeding by James Giudice. When brought to court. Judge Tom Douglas fined Galluci for speeding, reckless driving, unreported color-blindness, and driving without a license. Giudice said his atom-powered motorcycle could barely catch him. Bulletin! Bob Turco with his accomplices, Richard Wilcox, Robert Bernasconi, and Sandra Williams, have been apprehended after a nation-wide search. They are charged with robbing the U. S. Mint. Among the members of the orchestra are Ronald Gulluscio, Margaret Mandel- la. Bob Spargo, Carol Hutchings, Ann Kenneth, and John E. Capalbo. Music is arranged by Mary Lou Hutchins and the soloist is Gayle Eccleston. Liberace, because of ill health, has been forced to give up his TV program, but the networks have announced that the celebrated Peter Pucci will take over where “Libby” left off. The Health Drink Union has recently announced that Joseph Misto and Frank Cofone have been awarded lifelong memberships in the Union because of their long and devoted service to the cause of “Chug-a-lug.” New members initiated into the Union were Joseph Perri, Joseph Wucik, and Dick Cofoni. A new book has been released on the life of Monsieur Nelson French in gay Paris. The author of this stirring account of romance, is Ma-damoiselle Myra Downes, who wrote from practical experience. With a crash and a bang, Carleton Johnson’s and Jack Duksta’s new Time Machine has sent the world into a spin. For since both of them have returned from the Dark Ages, there has been nothing but constant argument between them as to the true age of Ally Oop. History Making Event of the Year!!! The mayor of Westerly for the coming two years will be John Turrisi. He was formally elected the mayor of Padookaville while he was a student at Westerly High. We recently read in the Easterly Sun that Dor-dy Williamson and Bill Sullivan have joined the Westerly Trotters in fall training, and it is rumored hereabouts that Ralph “Bug” Christy will star with the Trotters as bench-warmer. Such grand news! We were thrilled to hear that Kay Church, Claire Spear, and Lois Prizito have recently opened a School for Singing, Dancing and Dramatics. In all likelihood it will be a success, as all three hold a D.G.A. Degree (Doctor of Graceful Arts). Miss Loretta Mebert and Miss Mary Mello have been chosen to represent the United States in the ’84 Olympics in the women’s weightlifting division. On the basis of their past records, they will be overwhelming favorites. They are greatly concerned that a player will never come again to match his superlative tones. ’Tis a shame! After distinguished baseball careers, Marty Pierce and John H. Capalbo have bought out Federico’s Sporting Goods Store, and have turned it into the outstanding business in New England. They call it the “You Want It, We Have It—Athletic Store.” Next door is Toscano’s Clothing Shoppe, which specializes in serving the interests of all men over 100 years old. He is running out of business. If you happen to pass the Palace Theatre just off Broadway, you would see Judy Tetlow and Betty Johnson starring in the leads of that new comedy, “Father Does Not Know Best.” They were started on their successful theatrical careers in 1955 with that famous play, “Father Knows Best.” U. R. I. builds cyclotron! Earl Crandall and Ronald Denham are in the process of completing the only privately-owned machine capable of putting a split atom together again. (Continued on page 19 —8(l7)3— The Senior Year Book — 1955 Class IIistor v We, the Class of 1955, have spent a momentous three years within the portals of Ward Senior High School. Before we part to go our widely diversified ways, let us pause to look back over the events of our past three years together. With trepidation we entered the school as sophomores three short years ago. The school was so vast! We stood in awe of the seniors. Could we ever reach such heights? Our first important act as a class was the election of our officers who guided us so ably in our first year. Charles Vars was elected president, with Angelo Perrone as vice president, James Edmond as treasurer, Barbara Carlesi as secretary, and Jean Nardone as P. T. A. representative. As the crisp days of autumn came upon us several of the sophomore boys were given a chance to prove their athletic ability as members of the football squad. Many of our hidden talents were brought to light in the Frolics of ’52. Among those sophomores who contributed to the entertainment were Gayle Eccleston, Margaret Mandella, Janet Shortman, Robert Spargo, Lois Tasca, and James Smith. Playing important roles in the success of the basketball team were George Williamson and Bill Sullivan. With the coming of spring, the baseball season was ushered in. Martin Pierce, Bob Payne, and Bill Sullivan were among those sophomores who were on the team. Adding to our accomplishments, in the literary field Jack Barrett and Donna Lewiss won awards in the prize speaking and Martha C. Babcock Essay contests respectively. Our junior year was entered with a certain degree of confidence and assurance. We entrusted the following with the management of the class: James Smith as the chief executive, Martin Pierce as vice-president, Joann Turo as treasurer, and Marie Panciera as secretary. The football season rolled swiftly past, with such juniors as Bob Payne and Albie Page participating in the sport. Our acting and singing abilities were given a chance to shine forth in an operetta, Victor Herbert’s “The Fortune Teller.’’ Those juniors with major roles were Gayle Eccleston, Jack Barrett, and James Taber. Instrumental in the success of the basketball team were George Williamson, Bill Sullivan, Marty Pierce, and Joe Perry. The junior prom, “Night in Venice,’’ will always be numbered among our dearest memories. Its success and the ingenuity of the decorations cannot easily be forgotten. Our lovely queen was Gayle Eccleston. Ably representing the junior class on the baseball team were Marty Pierce, Bob Payne, Bill Sullivan, and Ronnie Panciera. Another item was added to our already impressive list of accomplishments when the chemistry team consisting of Joann Turo, Carolyn Burdick, Earl Crandall, Barbara Meyer, and Donna Lewiss won second prize in the annual contest at U. R. I., with Joann Turo placing third in the individual scoring. The achievements of the year were concluded with Bob Fair winning first prize in the annual Martha C. Babcock Essay Contest. In the fall of 1954, well aware of the dignity and importance of our new position as the senior class, we duly selected James Smith, Joann Turo, William Ferrigno, Myra Downes, and Joseph Perry, as president, vice-president, treasurer, secretary, and class marshal, respectively. The football team was ably led by Co-captains Bob Payne and Albie Page. Our senior prom, an outstanding success in The Senior Year Book — 1955 all ways, will not be easily equaled in years and by classes to come. “Fall Festival,” the theme of the prom, was appropriately carried out in the unique decorations. Jean Palmisano was our radiant queen. Again showing forth diversified talents, many of the class participated in the highly successful “Frolics of ’54.” Among those seniors who took part were Phyllis Kenyon, Margaret Man-della, Janet Shortman, Theodora Perra, Richard Wilcox, the Senior Sextette, and many more. Contributing immeasurably in capturing the state basketball championship were Co-captains George Williamson and Bill Sullivan, and their teammates Marty Pierce, Bob Payne, and Joe Perry. The highly entertaining and amusing “Father Knows Best” was given as our senior play. The capable cast included Jack Barrett, Lois Dempsey, Barbara Teixiera, Betty Johnson, Jim Smith, Gayle Eccleston, Janet Shortman, Ann Kenneth, Raynor Chester, James Taber, Bob Fair, Charles Vars, David Itchkawich, Peter Pucci, Jean Palmisano, Judy Tetlow, and Margaret Mandella. Joann Turo and Carolyn Burdick were deservedly chosen as valedictorian and salutatorian. Donna Lewiss was given the D. A. R. award. Our three years together in high school have passed quickly, leaving but memories to remind us of our high school days. Now let us look forward with hope and confidence to the future. BARBARA MEYER MYRA DOWNES CLASS AUGURY (Continued from page 14) several influential politicians, namely: Joseph Perry and Ralph McGibbon. The government announced last month that Edward Fournier, James Taber, and Donald Wilcox will be our country’s envoys to France. Their selection was based on their diplomacy and knowledge of the French language. Prosperous goat rancher, Ronald Kenyon, has sold his entire herd to Chester Gacioch, former lion tamer, now retired. Marlies Frieg has been made ambassador to Germany, replacing Lois Main. Miss Frieg was chosen for the job because of her interest in her mother country. Miss Main resigned to take a post with the F. B. I., namely, to serve at Alcatraz. Patty Panciera and Yvonne Fenelon announce that their circus will open in Westerly Square Garden on June 17th. Among the feature acts will be Charlotte Street on the tight-rope with Margaret Joseph and Bernice Crompton acting as hilarious clowns. The National Dare-Devil Association has just announced that its annual Academy Awards will go to Bob Payne, the boy with a Buick-like Trigger, Albie Page, and Gregg Burdick, with their souped-up atom-powered Fords. We hereby appoint Mr. Robert Mudge as sole administrator of this our last, final, and conclusive will and testament. In witness whereof, we, the Class of 1955, the testators, have set our hand and seal this fifteenth day of June, Anno Domini one thousand nine hundred and fifty-five. These teams all played terrific ball, but the Padooks consisting of mostly seniors won the league title and a trophy which hasn't been awarded since 1938. The captain of the Padooks was Joseph Perri who did a great job with his winning team. The following boys played on the Padookaville team: Joseph Perri, Captain; John Turrisi.
